It was a religious experience. To be able to golf in such a humbling environment as towering redwoods, mirror ponds, grand views of the Calaveras foothills and snow-capped Sierras, took turns as being host from hole to hole. And there was hardly anybody there on a Sunday afternoon, which is unheard of for any city golfer like myself. It was like having your own personal course. It is a shorter executive 18 hole course with a lot of par 3's and only one par 5. A par 60 if you will, but that by no means translate into an easier round. Challenging elevation changes and narrow holes makes command of your game a premium. Outside of the sheer beauty of the terrain and architecture of the course, it could use better maintenance. Lot of the greens were scarred and the sand traps were closer to hard clay traps. Maybe it is just remnants of a wet and cold winter, it may well look a hell lot better in the height of summer. But for $26 to walk on this peaceful and breathtaking course, how can one lose. A recharge for the soul is what this place brings. Just in time to end a great weekend. read more

Do not go here if you want to play golf. The green fees are $20 to walk and $25 to ride. You are on an honor system and put money in the box before beginning play. There is no grass in the fairways or on the greens. It cost me $75 for my group to find this out. Honestly, this place shouldn't even be open. Course is in terrible condition; mostly dead grass from lack of water. Reportedly for sale. All telephone mailboxes are full. You can play, carts are available, but you will be hitting off of dirt 90% of the time. Greens are 100% dead. Putting is virtually impossible. We stopped after 4 holes. read more

New owners have really been investing in the golf course and the community. They recently installed 2 high tech golf simulators for those rainy/snowy days. The bar and food area were super clean and had a very friendly vibe and the guy working the bar went out of his way to be extra accommodating. Golf course was beautiful and the rain definitely helped course conditions so now is the time to go! The golf carts are also brand new! For a 9 hole course it has some longer/more challenging holes than typical 9 hole courses do. Definitely worth going! read more

Some places are best left to memory. It's a beautiful setting, but the course was in atrocious condition. Gopher holes everywhere, gnats, flying around, bare spots abound, funky cartpath I played it years ago when it was 18 holes and it doesn't compare to what it's like now. This course was pretty disappointing; for the $72 I spent for my wife and I to golf nine holes... tee boxes were pathetically maintained and uneven as were the greens and fairways. Cart paths were a joke -as was the cart we were given with a totally busted steering system. The course layout was decent, and has a lot of potential if a little bit of TLC/daily maintenance and upkeep were done. read more

My husband and I took Golf Lessons today with Danny and it was awesome! I have never golfed and Dave has had experience. I was somewhat intimidated with the indoor big screen and the cameras. But it was a great experience. Danny would explain what I needed to do, I would practice and then Danny would review the tape with me and help me understand from the tape where my swing or grip needed to change. What a hidden gem! Beautiful course, surrounded by trees in the mountains. Great for all levels of play, elevation changes, some narrow fairways, but nothing to scare you off. Would have been 5 stars but some of the tee boxes could have been better kept, kinda muddy in some places but still fine. Look forward to going back! read more

Nice little nine hole. Played here a couple times and I really enjoyed it. Greens are pretty good. The ninth hole's grass is very hard and a little rocky, but that's alright. Very nice staff in the pro shop as well. I recommend. I heard there is a back nine but they need more members in order to refurbish and open it. So it could be an 18 hole. Maybe it will be soon. read more

Just opened under new ownership 4/2/2022 and it's beautiful! Remodel is amazing, simulator golf and course golf. Owners were friendly and brought life back to this course! I really enjoyed my time at the renovated Murphys 9 golf course. I was visiting relatives in Arnold and everyone decided to sleep in. As a result, I found myself wide awake with nothing to do. I had considered visiting many times in the past, but had just never made it out to the course. The gentleman in the pro shop as well as the gentleman in charge of the carts were both very friendly. I arrived just as they were opening and they told me I could get started and simply come in to pay after the 3rd hole (3 holes on one side of the pro shop, 6 on the other). I had never seen this course with 18 holes, so, unfortunately, I am unable to comment on the changes. The course is fairly narrow and favors accuracy over distance. The only really lengthy hole is the 1st (520ish yards). The rest of the course is made up of par 3's and 4's. My home course in Stockton (Swenson- which I highly recommend for a cheap muni), is very flat and relies on distance and tree-lined fairways to keep you honest. For me, the Murphys 9 course seemed short, but had some nice elevation changes and greens surrounded by heavy rough. If you miss long, you will likely lose your ball! I really enjoyed the drop shot from an elevated fairway onto the green at hole 9! There were a couple of cons, which is why I only rated this course a 4. Although there are very few bunkers in play, if you hit one, it was almost impossible to hit out of. One reason for this is that the bunkers seem to be made of clay mud and dirt, rather than sand. The second reason is also my 2nd con of the course for the time that I played. The sprinklers were going the whole time I was on the course. This made the bunkers very muddy and made the greens run very slow. I had to putt through puddles multiple times. I would definitely come back to this course, although I think I would come a little later in the day to allow some of the water to dry up off the course. I also recommend using a cart if you are not in decent physical shape. I'm not huge, but walking up and down elevated holes with my bag (and the humidity of all of the water) was probably not the best idea. All in all, I really enjoyed the serenity, beauty, and affordability of this course. I apologize for the long review, but I wanted to comment on the new layout since most of the reviews here on Yelp were pre-renovation. I hope to see you out there!! -Jerry read more

They just re-opened a couple weeks ago. Played the course for the first time. Beautiful 9 hole course under towering pines. Thursday morning at 8am I had the entire place to myself. Walked it and didn't see another person. There were a couple tee boxes in rough shape and a couple fairways have quite a few gopher holes, but the greens were in great shape and none of it detracted from the experience. read more

At only $18.50 for an early morning tee time as of July 5th, 2014, this is a great value. Long holes and clusters of short holes, gopher holes too. The first 9 holes isn't nearly as well manicured as the back 9 where the nice clover fairways are beautiful. Leave the driver in the bag unless you are a very straight hitter. Get it just a little off the fairway and your ball is lost in the pines and poison oak. Friendly folks working the pro shop and the 19th hole help the positive experience stay positive. read more

This year the course has been updated and is in the best shape it has ever been in and with the beautiful mountain setting it doesn't get any better. Although 9 holes it is a challenging course that requires all your clubs. I highly recommend it! read more

Nice, hilly 9 hole course in forest-setting. My first time here was in July 2018. Greens in excellent shape, although we played on a Sat morning at 10 am and the whole place had been over-watered. Greens and fairways very wet, making the course play much longer than the yardage. But your approach shots stuck into the damp greens pretty well. If you book online it appears you will pay more than double for the convenience. Not a fan of the current layout, with back-to-back par 3's on holes 2-3 and then again on 5-6. This really backed-up the playing groups, some of whom appeared to be slow players anyway. I believe they just converted this 18-hole exec course layout into a 9-hole earlier in 2018, but they could have done a better job with the new routing. Par 3 2nd and par 4 8th were our favorite holes. Yardage on #9 par 4 is listed incorrectly and playing shorter than listed - you should layup so your approach shot is from level ground. A disappointing final hole to end the course. I hope this course stays open (it was closed for several months at the turn of the year) but they kinda messed up the routing. Wish I could have played here while it was still an 18-hole exec course. read more

So the course is alright, went up there today and it was in OK condition. In my personal opinion is a bit overpriced for a 9 hole course. And when I played I was fairly disappointed with the condition of the course. I also bought a groupon to play. It was advertised for the 18 hole rate with a cart but when I got there to check in I was told that it was only sufficient for one round of golf which is 9 holes...ok. I then double checked and reconfirmed with the guy in the pro shack and he said one round of golf is 9 holes....kinda false advertisement in my opinion but whatever, I was drinking some beer and swinging. The course is short. I've never played a par 33 before, but ok. The thing I really enjoyed about the course where the pine trees. If you want to be mentally challenged (bogey golfers) on your ability to hit the ball straight, then this is a fun course to play if your on Hwy4/ Murphy-Arnold area. Basically if you can't hit down a corridor your ball is gone. The greens are slow, and the fairway grass is nothing special, which is the main reason I think the cost is overpriced, however I realize the population is small in that area. So overall, I think the best thing this course could do is make it more clear that they are only a 9 hole course (other than having two names) and lower the rate to a nine hole rate or make more genuine specials to attract those from an hour away to make the trip up to play some golf. Other than that, I wish you guys were an 18 hole because I made the drive to escape the heat but the price wasn't there to stay for 18 and play all 9 holes twice. read more

All kinds of shots needed mostly straight.....just do not hit the trees. The greens are smooth with a few plug repair marks. What lowered my rating by one star are the bunkers. They looked like 105 shell holes raked out. Nothing but dirt, rock, silt and mud. Rather than damaging my clubs I took a drop OUT. What added an additional star is the gas powered golf cart. It was a jeep the way it drove all over the course...down the bank, up the ob hills, over roots and through the trees. Flying down the narrow pothole filled cart path was almost worth the green fee. Do be careful of the thousands of gopher holes everwhere except in and around the greens. Richard in the pro shop is friendly and helpful but can not move a twosome faster than 2 1/2 hours for the front nine without any marshals. My foursome jump passed them on the back nine, Because of the 20 minute wait at tee boxes we enjoyed the beautiful hills and vistas. If I'm in the area again I will bring my clubs and play. read more
