This summer, my child attended Forest Home as a CCA, which is pretty much babysitting several kids for a week while not getting paid. My child came home miserable, never wishing to return to Forest Home ever again, as this experience was not one wished to be repeated.
First off, the perfect looking blue lake,
located at the camp is dyed. Luckily, my child doesn't have any severe skin allergies, but to not be informed of something such as this when children could have an allergic reaction to the dye makes me highly concerned as to what else this camp is hiding from everyone. Now, as a parent and an adult, I don't feel that this is a safe environment for children to be in.
I was also informed by my 13 year old daughter that were only given one tiny scoop of food, and typically, the food wasn't even good. Also too, the CCA's had to eat last! All my daughter wanted was simply some yogurt for breakfast. The camp had yogurt for breakfast, but by the time my daughter got to pick her food, there was none left, unbelievable! You would think that the camp would at least have fruit, right? Well, out of the 18 meals that the campers and CCA's got at camp, only 1 meal had fruit! During one meal, my child ended up eating snacks that she packed herself, since the food so disgusting.
Not all of the food was bad though. The food that you could PURCHASE my child said was ok, but for the food to be so bad that kids had to go to one of the camp shops on the property and have to purchase food, really? Also too, thank goodness my child has a debit card, because they didn't even except cash at these places! I mean do they really expect every single child to be sent to camp with their parents credit card? What an outrage! This kind of thing should be included in the camp since some kids might not be sent to camp with any money at all. At that point what are those kids supposed to do, starve?
This brings me to the next flaw in this camp. I understand that most sleep away camps don't allow phones, and that is totally fine by me. Though if one kid were to have a medical issue or something, I do believe that there should be a way to contact their parent, since the nurse-like people at the camp aren't of much help. One girl in my daughters cabin tripped and fell on the uneven ground at the camp and broke her arm. The staff at the camp didn't seem to care that much, after all, all they gave her was some ice. Luckily, there was some type of communication system that the CCA's were allowed to use. In the gift shop, there was a phone there where kids allowed to call their parents. The only downside is EVERYONE in the gift shop can hear the ENTIRE call on the kids side. Shouldn't the kids be given some privacy when calling their parents? I mean, seriously this is a camp where kids are supposed to be having fun, but from what I was told by my child, this camp didn't seem to be an experience worth repeating.
Sure, if you are a camper and your family is ultra religious, and agrees that being gay is a sin and all that stuff, then the camp would be a blast. What about people who are gay though? Does it really do you any good to tell them that they made the choice to live in sin? My daughter and I both support the LGBTQ+ community, so this was definitely not a good camp for her. I mean what if she comes out gay, what would happen? This just does not seem acceptable for adults to teach children that you shouldn't except everyone, because this is not true. Everyone should be accepted, no matter their race, gender, or sexuality.
After an excruciating day of dealing with bratty children, my daughter finally got to go to bed at 1:30! Not to mention, this was early compared to some of the days there. I mean, hello, some kids have a bedtime here! That might be fine if they at least got to sleep in though, right? Well, here at Forest Home, sleeping in doesn't exist. It makes sense why other reviews said that their counselors weren't the best, (and probably not the most awake) they were sleep deprived for heaven sakes!
I would like to discuss many more issues other than the ones stated in this review, but if I continue, soon I will have a full 10 page review on a camp written. I do have to say though that I urge you to find another camp, unless you would like to be put through a week of torture. Then, by all means attend Forest Home and suffer for a week, or even the whole summer if you would like. read more
