Surprise! Mr. Snarky said that we were going on a trip, but I wasn't allowed to know where. I remember he had mentioned these cabins before, but didn't know there was a site in Sherwood Pines Forest. I have been to the forest before to do the Go Ape course, but never realised this getaway was here. A note on getting to the place...don't follow your Sat Nav, go to the Sherwood Pines Forest entrance and then there will be a turn off to the cabins.
Check in was a bit hectic since a lot of people were checking at the same time, but it went fairly smoothly...a lot of information to remember, but just remember to have the code for the gate if you do end up driving back late. The road is a one way system, but it allows you to see the variety of cabins and the layout of the site. There must not have been enough two-person cabins, so we had a cabin with three bedrooms!
They are lovely! We had a hot tub, full kitchen, two couches, a wood burning oven, a flat screen tv, Wii console (you have to go up to Reception in order to get the controllers), a spot above the tv to plug in various technology to play on the tv, two bathrooms (one with a bath tub and one with a shower), two bedrooms with two twin beds, one bedroom with a double bed, and under floor heating! I asked Mr. Snarky if we could buy one :)
I believe Wifi is extra and you can use the tv to order pizza and/or movies. We only ordered movies so I cannot speak to the quality of their pizza. They send someone around within an hour of check in, to go through some of the amenities of the cabin and answer any questions. Shortly after the staff member left, we brought in everything from the car, put on our swim wear, robes (they provide two large robes), and headed for the hot tub. It is wonderful, especially without all the light pollution, you can see the stars (if there isn't a huge tree in the way).
The kitchen has many utensils, dishes and pots, but it does not have a non-stick fry pan, measuring cups, and cleaning supplies like dish soap, dishwasher tablets, or sponges. Our dishwasher was not very efficient so I just ended up washing most of the dishes. The tv has lots of cable choices and also has movie choices, recent movie choices. You can play music through the t.v. as well.
If you need some basic amenities, you can go up to reception and they have a small convenience store. There is also a cafe as well as maps and toys for sale. There are activities you can pay to join, like archery, but they only happen on certain days. If you want additional linens or towels, it will cost extra, however, they don't keep the linens on site, so if you have urgent need, chances are you might be stuck. We were also a bit surprised that for a cabin for six people that there was only one large towel, and the rest were just slightly larger than a hand towel.
We had some minor issues with Mosquitos, so do remember to close the windows at night or they will buzz you. And the under floor is extremely efficient, so need to whack it up so high as you will turn the place into a sauna. We did have an issue one of the days because we woke up and it was quite cold. Turns out that in the closet near the door is the master control, the staff told us how to fix it, if we didn't want to wait for them to come out.
There are activities like Go Ape, Segway tours, bike rentals, hiking trails, etc in the area...although if it is rainy (which it was for half of the time we were there), bring some board games, get some groceries, and just stay in. It is a fantastic place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle! read more
