I would not recommend this place and will never return…read more I was overcharged for services I did not request or need. I went in specifically because my primary care doctor referred me due to frequent nosebleeds. Instead of focusing on that issue, the doctor moved me from room to room, checked unrelated areas like my ears, and then charged me for those exams without explanation or consent. The entire visit lasted less than 10 minutes, and I left with nothing more than a cream for my nose, which has not worked at all. Somehow, that brief visit resulted in a $630.40 bill, which feels completely unjustified. I called several times to get it adjusted and they just gaveme the run around. I don't understand why unnecessary exams were performed or added to the bill. This experience felt rushed, disorganized, and extremely overpriced. If you're looking for honest care and transparent billing, I strongly suggest going elsewhere.

Dear Contra Costa ENT,…read more I was going to ask what your problem is. Instead, I will spell out exactly what your problem is: the quality of the doctors! The 2 doctors I have seen in this practice are rude, arrogant, don't listen, want to do the minimum amount of work figuring out my problem, don't want to do a thorough workup, and could care less about my prior symptoms/medical experiences. The first doctor I saw told me to take ibuprofen everyday for a month despite my prior history of a GI ulcer. And I didn't even have neuromuscular pain! I sent him my file with my medical history a few days before and he obviously didn't review it. A doctor not familiarizing themselves with a pt's history is irresponsible. How can a doctor effectively treat a patient's problem without understanding their past medical history? The second doctor was fixated on a TMJ diagnosis could not accept that not only were night guards unhelpful for me, but that my dentist does not think they are necessary. His response was to tell me to keep wearing it twice instead of accepting my answer the way a respectable doctor should. A dentist's opinion that a night guard isn't necessary should be the end of an ENT bringing up a TMJ diagnosis, period. The same doctor (#2) made rude and arrogant comments demonstrating how immaturely he behaves. "I already investigated by looking into your ear" is not how to respond to a patient asking for a thorough work up. "I'm a pretty good clinician" is not how to respond to a pt who doesn't think you are communicating well with them. After dumping doctor #2, I found an amazing ENT who not only communicates respectfully but did a thorough evaluation that caught significant problems that require surgery. She and the audiologist who diagnosed a mild hearing loss were surprised my prior ENT kept pushing TMJ with the absence of dental symptoms. My new dentist (& my former one before I moved to CCC) did not see any evidence of TMJ. I'm pretty sure both dentists would have said something if they did. My current ENT also thought my hearing would have been worse than it was and honestly I think it would have been if I stayed at CCENT. I actually submitted a complaint against the doctor who refused to evaluate further (& was rude) with the CA Medical Board because I want him to see that not listening to patients isn't just rude but dangerous. I'm worried that people who don't have a lot of medical experience may not know to seek a 2nd opinion the way I did after I was mistreated. Contrary to other reviews, I never had problems with the staff. However, my experiences with the doctors in this practice have been horrible and 100% outweigh my interactions with the staff. This practice really needs to hire doctors who enter medicine for the right reasons, especially those who listen to their patients and want to do as thorough of a work up as possible. The two doctors in my review contributed to my PTSD diagnosis from several male ENTs who dismissed my pain. As a result, I would like to see this practice to hire female doctors as there are other women who feel the same way as me about needing to see female doctors only. I will never go back unless the practice hires female doctors who genuinely care about their patients the way mine does. I will also tell anyone who asks for an ENT recommendation not to go there either.

The day I arrived I walked into the lobby and grabbed a mask. I proceeded to go down the hall to their office when outside their door they had a sign stating "masks are no longer mandatory however we recommend you wear one". I put the mask I grabbed I. The lobby in my purse and walked in. The receptionist checked me in and then proceeded to tell me that masks are no longer mandatory but we recommend you wear one. I informed her of the specific sign outside their door and told her that I have suffered for a few years with not being able to breathe through my nose, that I start hyperventilating with a mask because I am breathing in and out of my mouth and plus they had it like 80 degrees in there. I said no I am not wearing a mask. A few minutes later I was taken back to the room and a few minutes after I was in there a male nurse came in and set a mask down on the table staring the Dr will require me to wear that when he comes in and again I referred to the sign they had outside their door stating masks are no longer mandatory and that I would not be wearing one. A few minutes later the dr walked in Dr Joshua K Au. He said I needed to put the mask on. I told him again about their sign an I was not going to put the mask on. He then said he can't do surgery on me if I don't put the mask on and I told him that I would not have a mask on if and when I have surgery and that the mask will be down while he is in my face shoving a camera inside my nostrils. We spent about 20 minutes going back and forth about me not wearing a mask. By then I was pissed and he then said this patient Dr relationship is t goi g to work so I can't be your Dr. I told him he better not charge my insurance for this visit and I left. If they were still going to enforce masks they should NOT have had the sign outside their door stating they are no longer mandatory. If I could give zero stars I would. This was on Wednesday April 12th. I have since called Diable Valley ENT in Walnut Creek and got an appointment scheduled for this Friday. I told them what happened with Dr Au and they laughed and asked if I was kidding. They said we won't do that to you here. They also said Dr Au is a newer Dr and may not know any better. They couldn't believe he did that.

One of the biggest things for me was the communication--he's super easy to talk to, actually listens to your concerns, and explains everything in a way that makes sense. Overall the results have been great and the recovery was way smoother than I expected. The whole office vibe is professional but also very friendly and welcoming. Here's the updated review with your additional paragraph on imperfections:…read more Dr. Gerald Kangelaris and the team at San Francisco Otolaryngology are fantastic. The practice is staffed by incredibly caring doctors and run by an unbelievably warm and efficient staff. I especially want to give a shout-out to Sylvia at the Union Square office, who was not only very warm and compassionate as I felt nervous about my CT scan but also went above and beyond to get me a cup of hot water for my tea. That gesture was so thoughtful and reminded me of flight attendants who have very serious safety jobs but are also warm and attentive. At the other office, I really appreciated Jackie, who was very helpful with scheduling. Carol, who did the CT scan of my sinuses, was unbelievably compassionate and managed to calm me down without even realizing it just by her presence. One of the highlights of this practice is the exceptional approach to informed consent. The informed consent for the CT scan was the best I've seen, comparing the radiation exposure from the scan to the amount one gets in everyday life. This visual and relatable comparison is fantastic. As a law professor specializing in the ethics of informed consent and decision-making, I found this example to be excellent--on par with the LASIK procedure and research studies I've seen at UCSF, where the attention to informed consent is exceptional. There were a few imperfections in the medical care that I want to highlight. Communication with the doctor is through a medical assistant rather than directly, which isn't ideal. Additionally, I noticed some inconsistencies in advice, such as whether to start antibiotics right away or delay for a month until my next appointment. Another imperfection, which seems somewhat typical of practices not affiliated with academic hospitals, was a slight unfamiliarity with some research questions. For example, I had asked whether sinusitis is associated with other risks, such as cardiac risk or systemic inflammation. The doctor confidently said there hadn't been any studies on the topic, but I later found out that studies have been conducted. To be fair, I can't speak to the quality of those studies since I'm just a law school professor who studies studies, not a doctor or medical school professor! Despite these imperfections, I really appreciated that Dr. Kangelaris didn't push surgery, even though that's obviously a profitable option. Instead, he took a thoughtful, non-surgical approach by first suggesting a CT scan to assess the situation and then doing a culture to identify the best antibiotics, even mentioning that a longer course of antibiotics might be necessary. The office itself is beautiful, clean, and conveniently located, though parking at both locations is on the expensive side. Overall, this is an excellent practice with warm, attentive staff and a thoughtful, patient-centered approach to care. Highly recommend!

ENTs are in short supply, there's no great solution as far as getting good care quickly…read more I'd say this guy is top notch, the doctor himself gets 5 stars, it's just the office scheduling apparatus is confusing if you're a bit disorganized. Problems were really due to my own disorganization but if you aren't punctual and organized you'll have to reschedule. First off it took about 6-7 weeks to get an appointment, but this is actually good as I explain later. Apparently ENTs need an audiologist's report to have an objective chart of frequency/deficit relationships with your hearing. This takes an hour, too expensive for an MD to do--so this is done by an ancillary person-- audiologist -- who has to have a separate appointment with you. So you get two appointments. There are also two offices, one in Woodland and one in Davis and if you are get confused and go to the wrong place you'll be too late to make it to the other office and will have to make another appointment maybe a week later. Guess how I know. They do try to schedule you with the audiologist one hour before doctor at the same location so if everything goes smooth it's not a headache. So make sure you grasp not just WHEN but WHERE your appointment is, because if you google the phone number to get the appointment it's two layers, you get the referral service first who gets you on a separate call to the people who can actually tell you when and where your appointment is. And they might not remind you WHICH OFFICE your appointment is. It's definitely more clumsy than have a number getting you to a receptionist who directly looks things up. Zavod himself is great, obviously very smart, very polite but engaging with refined Old World manners. I guess the long time to get an appointment helps him from being overworked and burnt out. He takes time to thoroughly get your history and details, and the time to carefully and sympathetically explain everything. Other doctor's offices I've gone to have a crowded waiting room because they're doing a model where the MD spends the absolute minimum time to bill the service with you, tell you the general category of your diagnosis, and then the next patient is herded in. They are at best superficially genial and detached, and you can tell they are not really interested in medicine anymore. They aren't tuned into the nuances of your particular case which offer the opportunity to optimize treatment. Zavod's not like that, he seems to have his clinical curiosity and empathy intact. At one point I laughed when he was describing my moderately severe condition and he looked sort of shocked. I explained that the whole apparatus he was carefully explaining was sort of comical, and reassured him I took my condition seriously. He wanted me to take my case seriously because he himself did, which is a good ad for him. I only acted so weird because I'm sort of a Buddhist and the body is just a cloud floating by.
