Finally we got seated next to the door - not an ideal place on a cold night. To beat the consistent draft brought in by new customer's and people collecting their take away pizzas we started off with ordering 2 bottle so wine. We went for some Italian wine - accordingly to the occasion, but were slightly disappointed with the first red bottle, the house selection. After multiple attempts we all agreed that the only really good bottle of wine was also the most expensive one (which is not always the case, as all of you wine lovers know. Price is hardly never the right indicator for a good bottle of wine...). To not burst the bank at the beginning of the evening I went for the cheapest option of starters - a couple of oven baked pizza dough balls for a steep 4.95 EUR. They were served with Garlic Butter. The dough balls were soft and steamy and topped with Garlic Butter not the worst choice after all, but yet a bit disappointing considering the price (most Italian Restaurants serve decent garlic bread for half the price). As main course I went for the Risotto - I love a good Risotto - and this one was ok, but would not be on the top of my fav Risottos of all times. My BF went for the steak and that was delicious. Cooked deliciously medium rare, bloody in the middle and served with crispy fries. The expensive bottle of red went very well with the steak. The portions were big enough and you did not feel cheated, the food was overall quiet good, but yet Im not sure if I would go back for seconds.

Both courses were absolutely lovely and the wine went along perfectly. The staff was extremely polite and everything was done with a smile and at a great pace. We arrived a little early, so the dining area was not buzzing - but when we left about an hour later, the atmosphere was much better. The fact that I'd nearly choked upon tasting it (I really dislike goat's cheese and this one was particularly overpowering!) didn't seem to be proof enough for him so he said he'd take it away to check with the chef. Sure enough he brought me a fresh one with mozzarella and sure enough he was very nice about the whole thing afterwards, but it was still more than a bit annoying, especially after waiting more than half an hour for the salad to arrive in the first place! Stick with the pizza, expect to wait a while for your food and for the service to be a bit erratic and you'll get on grand in Milano's - deviate from this and expect to come away a bit miffed by the whole experience.

Having the choice of thick or thin base and customisation for pizzas, as well as gluten free options is a plus. I liked the superfood salad a lot and it had a lot of interesting combinations such as quinoa, chickpeas, mung beans, edamame and a variety of veg. They also have pasta, calzone, risotto, lasagne etc. The restaurant itself is very big with a lot of seats and a nice atmosphere, great for a special occasion. I've come to Milano for many birthday parties over the years and often see others doing the same. They are child friendly with plenty of kids options, a good selection of desserts and free wifi (you can log in via Facebook or email). The downsides were that although the staff were friendly, they were not very attentive. I asked for the bill which never came, so I had to ask a different waitress which was kind of annoying. I found it quite hard to attract the waiters attention in general, but the restaurant is pretty big so it is probably understandable. But otherwise, they were pretty efficient in that after ordering things came pretty fast. The food in around 15 minutes and I got my tea in only a few minutes after ordering it. If there was an option to give no stars I would, its really just not worth it anymore. Firstly the food has lost all the qualities of "takeaway food", now it just tastes like something I could get in dunes a day before it goes off and quickly cook it at home. They've tried to justify this by lowering the prices down by a couple of cents here and there but you're paying for cheap tasteless food, and that's exactly what you're going to get! The service has gotten horrendous too! Call them recently on Fish and Chips day to get some food delivered and had to repeat my order to the guy on the phone 5 times. I'm really not even exaggerating. After this, he calls the order back out to me, leaving out half of it and asks me how much the total is. I got seriously annoyed and whoever was nearest to him in the shop, grabbed the phone and started to apologize on his behalf. After going through the order process once again with the new guy he now leaves out the sauces that we ordered and proceeds on giving me the price on each individual item even though I've asked him about everything together. At that stage I actually couldn't hack it anymore and just told him to forget it, hung up, and drove down to another place about 15 mins away. Well that's finally arrived in the form of a lovely Italian (as in the people running it are Italian) cafe/restaurant called Cafe De Bróc. They make their own pizza (regular AND gluten-free, which my girlfriend can confirm actually is gluten-free) as well as several pasta dishes that I'll be back to check out. They also do lunchtime regulars like a club sandwich. I had the lamb burger topped with blue cheese myself which was lovely and came with a side salad or chips. Aoife was very impressed with her pepperoni pizza, although was regretting her lack of adventure when we saw another pizza come out topped with Parma ham. It looked amazing. The pizza, burger, a sparkling water and takeaway coffee (good and strong, the way you'd expect Italian coffee to taste) came to €32 which i was happy to pay given the quality of the food. The staff were very friendly, particularly the manager/owner who showed the kind of concern and friendliness that you only get from someone who has a personal stake in a business. The space itself is very bright due to glass doors along half the front of the restaurant which was nice to have on a sort-of sunny day. In closing this is a lovey little (seats about 30?) place that i'll be coming back to again and again.

Shouk's interior is very cute, with high ceilings and an open set up allowing you to dine outside, in a room connected to the outdoor space, or a darker, "indoor" area. food: Fantastic. The food was fresh and served warm right as it was finished - huge plus service: Servers were kind and lovely :) Every table reservation gives you 1hr and 45 minutes to dine. if you're running late, you won't lose your table but you'll just be seated for a shorter amount of time - keep that in mind :) ambiance: The only reason I'd give Shouk 4 stars is because of the distance of the tables. In the room connected to the outdoor space where we were seated, things did feel a bit cramped. The restaurant has an "open kitchen" where you can see your food being cooked and come out which is great, but we did sit right next to the kitchen and things got a bit stuffy, despite the doors being open outside. Not sure if this was ventilation or the fact that there were many tables and folks dining that night, but that's the only thing i'd change about our experience.

Inside a cosy but buzzy dining room greets you with an impressive number of hungry diners tucking in to the Middle Eastern/Lebanese fare. We ordered a large mezze to share together with a Batta which is mostly roast sweet potatoes stuffed with lamb mince, yoghurt and spices. Absolutely fantastic. The mezze came with plentiful flatbreads which we hungrily filled with deliciousness and devoured. As it was lunchtime, we decided not to have any wine but I'd be pretty confident it would only be better with a crisp Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. As it was, we had some sparkling water instead and agreed it was a standout meal that was filing but also vaguely healthy. Service was speedy and attentive and we emerged into the sunshine to begin, once again, the odyssey across the Liffey. We will be back.
