They helped me choose fabrics to go with some I brought for my next project and despite being a small store, they have many fabric choices; retro, modern, classic, many shades of all colors. Being a small business owner, I prefer to patronize small businesses rather than places like Joanns and am willing to pay more per yard for that. There were other quilting supplies and patterns available but I didn't look at them on this trip. I love seahorses, and they had a beautiful wall hanging of a seahorse which I will incorporate into a bed quilt.

When Joann's in Kingston, NY shut down, two of the longtime employees put their heads and hearts together and opened Frugal Fabrics on Ulster Avenue. This isn't your typical fabric store- big box or otherwise. What sets Frugal apart is that these ladies accept some fabrics as donations and sell. But don't mistake that for low quality. The fabric selection here is impressive AND affordable. While my home leans neutral with rustic woods, concrete and stone, I love to funktify it with pops of color. I don't sew, but I do love beautiful fabric and walking into Frugal F. felt like heaven. The colors, the heft, the textures- especially the pieces I picked up, were delicious. It's a hidden gem for crafters and quilters- neither of which I am, but I'm so glad I came here- plus these ladies know their stuff. By the way, they offer a point system and get 'oink' ;-) points based on how many yards of fabric were purchased.

They had me go to a shorter line, which was for returns, when I had no return. I must have watched 20 customers behind me leave before me. A 15 minute wait for 2 customers ahead of me. I'll admit this seems to be an issue at most locations. I don't think this corporation will ever figure it out, and because of that I generally avoid these stores.

I wondered at why they opened another one only 5 miles down the road from the one in Latham. The sales associate said it's also smaller by about 10,000 sq ft, but I couldn't tell because it had the same amount of shelf space for the hobbies that I like, so it's no big difference to me. I can't believe that a Hobby Lobby would require more square footage than a Toys 'R Us! If you're a bargain hunter like me, you'll find some gems at steal prices in the clearance section, but since this is a new store, there aren't a lot of marked down stuff yet, as expected. One of my favorite hobbies is model rocketry and HL has a dedicated section stocked with a variety of kits, launchers and engines to outfit your own (scaled down) Cape Canaveral launch site. But alas, they worked out a deal with the manufacturer (Estes) to discount their line and the 40% off coupon can no longer be used on those products ("Your Price," yellow tag). I took home a rocket kit anyway and applied the weekly 40% off coupon to an electric slot car. I'll have to stop in here again in the future, when we're in this area again.

The second time the issue turned out to be my user error, but the repair technician walked me through the issue in a really kind and informative way (no condescension at all!!!) Modern quilts hang all along the front porch and they just keep coming! The fabrics are like nothing else around this area of Vermont and the ladies were so helpful. I didn't want to leave and I want to rush back today. As I live in an RV, I have to use what I bought before I can buy more, so off I go to stitch and quilt! The staff are all incredibly friendly, and they are very flexible in accommodating to your needs. I took a pottery class for three weeks, and I had a blast! It was incredibly fun, and the instructor was super awesome! I really loved it. I wish I had more time to work with the instructors, but my schedule did not allow. Love the friendly atmosphere, and I got to meet so many creative people while practicing during the open studio hours. I do wish they had longer hours so it was more convenient for me schedule, but I understand this was mainly fitted around school-going children. They have a lot of cool workshops for kids, and the instructors are all very amazing from the art that I see the kids produce. There are so many different things they offer! They also allow adults a lot of resources and space to exercise their own creative projects, which I think is excellent. Everything is pretty reasonable, too! I definitely I wish I had found this place sooner! Their mascot cat is also incredibly friendly, and I adore her!
