Made sure to get a pair of Birks while in Portland because, no tax. Duh. Footwise had a decent selection however, they didn't have my size in the two of the pairs that I liked - total bummer. I wasn't going to leave without spending 150 bucks on a new pair and decided on a baby blue suede with large silver buckles option. Once I got back to California, I realized that the sales person neglected to tell me my foot required the standard foot bed (which shoes I purchased were definitely not). There are two types of foot beds in the Birkenstock brand, one for wider feet (standard) and one for slim feet. I didn't think that Birkenstocks made uncomfortable shoes, but discovered that wasn't the case once I wore my new pair for the day. My feet were KILLING me because they were too skinny for my feet. I got blisters too so, talk about AGGRO! I was really bummed because it's not like I could drive back to Portland to return or exchange them for a pair that fit properly. The only bonus to purchasing at this store was the obvious, no tax. Other than that I'm pretty pissed that I got such an uncomfortable pair of shoes. They were fine when I tried them on around the store, but, wearing them for an entire day was a different story. I was searching for a pair of Ugg slippers for my daughter. They were her number one Christmas request, and were sold out/back ordered everywhere online. My son lives in Portland and happened across this store's Hawthorne location. At my request, he went in and was told they expected to get the slippers in the next day. The salesperson took his name and followed up the next day... Meanwhile, the next day I tried to call the store to see if they'd received the slippers and was told they had a pair on hold for a customer, but that I could call back the following day if they weren't picked up. I ended up locating the slippers at this Broadway location and Ross (?) was fabulous to work with! He was super helpful and took my order over the phone and shipped the slippers immediately. I also received a call from Peter (?) at the Hawthorne store telling me they did have a pair of slippers in for my son as well. We released that pair in hopes of making someone else's day. Overall, I am incredibly impressed with the fabulous customer service at both Footwise locations. They were fantastic to work with and super helpful and friendly. Small store with a variety of shoes, sandals and slippers that have orthotic and arch support like Keen, Wolky, Vionic, Merrell, Taos, and Naot for example. However, within each brand, they carry just a select few styles. I keep begging them to carry shoes that are both supportive and attractive! Why can't shoes that have support also be fashionable and nice looking? They do have the largest selection of Birkenstock sandals carrying all the classics and new styles. They say that the soles are guaranteed, but when I asked to have one sole rebound, I as told it would take 6 weeks! I brought it to a shoe flair place at Lloyd Center mall and the gentleman there fixed it in 10 minutes for free! Customer service is hit or miss. There used to be a woman there who always greeted me, offered her assistance and helped me find shoes that fit. The last two times I visited I found out that she no longer works there. The ne staff, there were three people working, not one of them even acknowledged my presence. Huh? Even when I asked for help, asked to try on a shoe, exclaimed that I was struggling to feel whether they fit corr Carly, the service person never left his position at the counter and barely addressed me. There was only one other potential customer in the store! I'll continue to stop in a few times a year to check out new arrivals, but in between, I will order my favorite Wolkys and Birkenstock's online. read more

Trying to support the local stores. So sad to see their door has plywood on it so must have been smashed. Like they have a good selection of Haflinger slippers. Used to buy them online but the quality got pretty bad and they were falling apart after 6 months. Bought a pair last January for my husband that are still in good shape. So went back this year for a pair for my Mom. Yes they cost more than online but this year they said they have a year warranty on them. I don't even need my receipt as they have me in the system. This seems worth it to me to support local and make sure I get a quality product. read more

I've been suffering with leg pain and numbness and hip pain for a few years, with no relief from acupuncture, physical therapy, shots of cortisone. I shared my woes with Dave Alexander, a manager at this store and he gave me quite an education on the structure of my particular feet and ankles and put me in sneakers and sandals that lessened my pin immediately! He told me he's been doing this for thirty years and it shows because I feel like he just changed my life! And on top of all of that, he seems to genuinely love helping people and was basically cheering when I told him how much better I felt immediately. I want to throw all my old shoes away. I've been getting great shoes from Footwise for about 30 years--always quality shoes, service, and a trusty introduction to Birkenstocks and now Taos, my newest purchase. I'm not sure why the other reviewers are having such parallel experiences with Footwise--I've never had Zombie-like service here, but I only need new Birkenstocks every 5 years or so, so maybe I haven't had enough touches on the ball to have a misstep here. My primary problem with shoe shopping is that I have very, very wide feet. That makes it difficult to buy anything that fits at all; and once I've found something, I tend to wear through them quickly. Footwise helped me out better than any shoe store has before. Firstly, they were able to offer me shoes that were not only the right style and size, but offered foot support that I never even knew I needed (with immediately noticeable results). They also offered to resole my Birkenstocks (even though I originally suggested making a new purchase), and managed to refresh the leather so much that I barely recognized them as my own. They looked very nearly like they did they day I bought them. On top of this, the service was friendly and helpful. Conversation was friendly, helpful, and professional, and the staff remembered me without reintroduction when I returned to the store. I went in this location today to purchase my first pair of rubber Birkenstocks. As I was checking out at the counter the sales lady asked if I wanted to recycle the box? I said sure. Wore the shoes out and walked 10 feet to my car. I immediately noticed that the shoe was cutting into my big toe. I had to run to an appointment thinking I could return the shoes later. I returned to the store asking to return the shoes because they cut into my toe. The salesperson was rude and said we won't take them back because you don't have a box and you wore them! I literally walked 10 feet to my car and took them off. Then she claimed they were dis colored but that wasn't the case at all! I left and can honestly say without hesitation I will never buy Birkenstocks again especially at this store! read more

Absolutely abysmal service! Zombie-like as Yelper, Sherry S. astutely pointed out. They didn't crack a smile when my partner exclaimed with joy several times about finding such comfortable shoes. We bought over $350 worth of shoes because we loved them, but, I would never go there again nor recommend it, given the absolutely cold and unfriendly service! We will definitely buy these brands again, just not at Footwise! So, why was the help just standing at the cash register looking basically straight ahead out the window... very zombie like. I asked a question about the shoe sale and they did not even come over to lend a hand showing which shoes are on sale or doing anything that a shoe salesperson does? I mean I don't like the whole hovering over me but I don't mind a little pampering since I'm looking at 100.00 shoes and up?? It was really strange as if they were in a trance. Consistent is the best word to describe Footwise on Broadway. They have the shoes I want, when I want them at a price I'm willing to pay. If they don't have the shoes in stock, they'll order them and have them in just a few days with no extra charge to you. The staff was a lot friendlier years ago. I am not a big fan of shopping. Saying that, i know on occasion it needs to be done. I needed a new pair of shoes for work as I keep wearing the same pair (also bought here) over and over again. I think they might walk off my feet. I've been here before and liked the service I received and the prices were good. The last time I was here the shoes I bought ended up being less because there was a sale going on. That was nice. Walked in having a general idea of what I wanted, but seeing what I wanted and seeing the price of what I wanted led me in another direction. I ended up finding 2 pairs that I liked. After spending some time walking around in each, I decided on the sale pair as they were much more comfortable. I spend most of my day on my feet so comfort is very important. Low and behold they ended up being $10 less than what they were marked. Score!! I probably could have stayed there all day trying on shoes. There was absolutely no pressure from the sales people to make up my mind. I was free to roam and I quite enjoy that. When I am in need of a third pair of shoes, I will come back here again. read more

Wish I could give 6 stars. I didn't catch the name of the sales clerk, but I wish I did so I could send a personal thank you. I didn't tell him this, but I had a horrifying shoe shopping experience the day before. So when he took the actual time to help me, get me what I asked for, brought me a insole unprompted to try as soon as I said I had Planter f., go above and beyond to make sure I get the shoes I want, and was patient with me as I decided between a 40 and 41 in Birkenstocks, I was so relieved! Now I actually feel like I can go back and get the water proof Birks, and send my husband in to get me the glitter ones or the sheepskin ones as my Christmas present ;) The whole store had a homie feel and even had kids toys so my husband could keep them occupied while I was helped. Another clerk even came to help me pretty much right after I had walked in, but even at that 2 minute mark of being in the store, the gentleman clerk had already gone off to get me my first pair to try. I've always hated it when yelpers write reviews without ever making a purchase, but today when I walked into Footwise I think I got a sense of why that sometimes happens. I walked in and was the the only customer in the shop. The sales-rep working didn't acknowledge me, and even seemed to be aggressively moving papers about at the register so that I wouldn't approach her. I got the feeling that I should just leave, but figured that maybe I was imagining her unfriendliness and continued. When I'd selected a shoe and asked to try them on she didn't even make eye contact as she asked my size, grabbed the shoe out of my hand, and huffed into the back, just to return to slap the shoe box down on the side counter. I asked a question about the brand I was trying on - one I was unfamiliar with - and she made me feel like the biggest idiot. At this point I just wanted to get out of there, but figuring that she'd gone to so much trouble to get me the pair, I'd try them on anyway. Needless to say I made no purchase that day. It was liking going to a dreaded inlaw's house for dinner and feeling obligated to eat: of course the food wouldn't taste good. Now I don't know if I'm a doppleganger for her archenemy or what, but I felt totally unwelcome there. While not a kept Irvington woman decked out in expensive duds and designer handbag, I was respectfully dressed having just come from my job at a hospital. I really don't know why the service was so bad. I've worked retail, including footwear, for a few too many years and know that somedays it's hard to seem cheerful, but I've never been mean to to a customer, ever! I do hope to amend this review by giving them a second shot - the store had a great selection of awesome brands - like Clark's Indigo, Teva's dressier stuff, and of course Dansko. And, given that I am not indeed the look alike of some devil-customer, hope that the service is friendlier next time. read more

I am a picky, picky shoe consumer and I hate when sales staff hovers over me. That being said, this was one of the best shoe shopping experiences I've had in a while. Sofia was nice and helpful, but not overbearing by any means. It takes a lot for me to drop 100+ on a pair of shoes, so it was a relief when they said that I could take a pair home and wear them around the house, and if I wanted a different pair/size I could bring them back. Shoe shopping has seldom been a fun experience for me, but this past Sunday, Rachel Bennett w/Footwise changed that for me in a most positive way: After at least half an hour and trying on 5-6 pairs of shoes, I purchased a pair of black Naots, a process that Rachel facilitated w/patience, calmness, and cordiality, along w/an overall concern that my purchase be befitting (literally). Additionally, I was able to save 30% on my purchase, thanks to a generous discount authorized by store manager, Katie Swanson, the previous year. I received the discount as a result of my complaint about a defective pair of Tevas that I bought there in 2014. (The defect I reported wasn't manifest until well after the warranty had expired.) Even though it had been over a year since Katie granted the discount on my next purchase, she honored the price reduction without any question or argument. My experience is very similar to those described by Sherry and Caitlin. I went in there once to drop off my Birks to be re-soled, and once to pick them up. When I went in the first time, the woman behind the counter glared at me and answered my questions in the most cursory way imaginable. When I went back to pick them up, I was pleased that there was a different woman there behind the counter. But she ended up being was even less friendly than the first one. She glared at me as if I had gone into high-fashion place asking for Birkenstock repair, even though, alas, we were in a place that repairs Birkenstocks. I mentioned I also needed some new shoes and said I'd look around the store a bit, and she gave me a very curt "OK," and made no offer of helping or anything, even though I was the only customer in the store. There was a red headed girl, a bald guy, and dark haired/complexion girl. I didn't get her name but the darker complexion girl was HORRIBLE.
