Great prices and selection for the most part. I usually stop in to get beef or chicken when it's on sale. They also have great prices on apple cider vinegar and white vinegar and they have great sales on my favorite jar of tikka masala sauce. So now that my trusty Key Food on 5th ave is boarded and making room for a new super expensive apt complex, I've had to find a replacement.....and I'm pretty happy. So I've been here before every now and the, but now I pass this place on foot on my way home from work and I stop in almost 3 days a week. I might get a ready made sandwich, ground beef, eggs, creamer, apple juice, or what staple item I'm missing. I only get what I can carry in 1 or 2 cloth bags. I'm use to a free parking lot next to a supermarket...I so miss Key Food...LOL! Anywho, I'm happy that I can find mostly everything I need and the staff have been nice whenever I've need help. We usually go to a Foodtown in a different neighborhood, but happened to be here shortly before closing time and decided to see if it was similar. It's not, so I guess the foodtowns operate independently of each other? But you can use your card from any Foodtown here. It's nice to have a regular grocery store with a wide range of products at affordable prices right in the neighborhood. Plenty of organic, gluten free, vegan, whatever options. Aisle categories are clearly marked and stuff is logically placed and easy to find. There is ample bike space outside, and hand sanitizer by the door. They have markings on the floor to try to direct foot traffic safely, but I'd still recommend going when it's quiet because it's too tight to properly distance here. I usually do my weekly grocery shoppings at Trader Joe's and decided to give this grocery a try since it is much closer to my home. he supermarket is a decent size, not too crowded and looks mostly pretty clean. I thought prices in general were ok for the area. Frozen food section was a bit limited with organic & quality brands and products. My main problem with this supermarket is that some cashers I interacted with were really short with me, looked & sounded annoyed by my presence and was too busy texting on their phone during the checkout. (I did encounter with one casher who was lovely and excellent with packaging goods) Also they have paper bags but without handles so if you want to carry relatively heavy stuff you need to bring your own grocery bags or buy their own branded bags. Employees I interacted with in the store were not wearing masks which I prefer the grocery stores with mask mandate rule for all. Even though this place is very close to my home and I was hoping to make it my main grocery store, I think it's best to only shop simple things like fruits & drinks at this place. read more

I stopped here on my way to the park. The supermarket was clean and organized but, they did have boxes scattered around the aisles. I didn't see anyone stocking shelves so, I am assuming that's their permanent location. The supermarket had a fresh and wide selection of produce, dairy, meats, frozen food, and general grocery items. As the store is mid-size and packed to the brim, they have limited amount of variety for some items. However, I do appreciate that they sell ice cold water for $1.14 for a Poland Spring standard size bottle. read more

First of all, I love this store. The fact that it's a Foodtown is deceiving. It's a Foodtown amongst Foodtowns. It has all your staples plus health & gourmet products. So my experience with grocery stores in NY had been a super cramped Key Foods in the UES where my daughter originally lived. She moved 2 blocks away from this Foodtown recently and I honestly expected the same experience as in Key Foods. It was not, it is actually quite large, has an extensive deli and olive bar (yes!), and selection throughout. I was quite pleased with the fact that they literally had everything I was looking for. A community driven grocery store with good produce and deli counter. The only issue, and I don't know why they do this, they don't want you in the store with any other items bought somewhere else. Do these guys even live in Brooklyn?! They must drive everywhere. They have harassed me and my wife many times. This is the only thing that seems counterintuitive to their usually helpful customer service. It makes me question even giving them my business. There are plenty of comparable grocery stores within walking distance. We save so much money on many groceries at Target and then wrap up at the deli and veggies on the way home. read more

The floor employees are not very good at social distancing and some are very rude, not like where I grew up for sure. I ask management to help me find a product and they are very reluctant, he literally told me "whatever's there is what's there", and I had to say, "can you please just show me where the item is supposed to be so I know where to look for it?" I understand we are all under a lot of stress right now. But this absolutely does not under any circumstances give management the right to be rude to customers. I saw something happen today that was so disgraceful that I can barely talk about it. Someone who said he was the owner kicked an older gentlemen out of the store "for disrespecting him". Who does that? Earn my respect. It's your job to respect your customers, not to demand respect from them. I won't mention the same guy's constant flirtation with the cashiers. Or the way the mix supposedly organic product in with regular product unlabelled. But a lot of people seem to like it, I can't argue about that. I wish I could never go back again but since Key Food closed on Flatbush, things are tough. Key Food wasn't that great either but at least they were super, super nice. DNY on Flatbush has the best selection of fresh organic produce, and Vanderbilt Green is a true organic store that is super rare in the neighborhood. But I've never seen staff and management act like they do in Foodtown. I have an idea of why that is but apparently, a boss is a boss. read more

I may have to update this review once I finish off my Knish. But this store is very typical of NYC grocery stores. Meaning, expect to be packed in here like sardines and expect the same sardine-like smell. Totally normal for ALL NYC groceries. Now, I think the folks here are trying their best in shelving items with the lack of real estate that they have but it is tight quarters for sure. Go in with a list so you don't need to browse for anything. Their selection of Chobani FLIP yogurts needs a refresher! I would need them to do better with Key Lime, Mint Chocolate Chip and Cookie Dough and Peach Cobbler. Those flavors are hits and believe me, I NEED to be a spokesperson for Chobani FLIP (had 4 people in that store purchase that item based off of what I said in the aisle... I know my FLIPs). The cashiers were so friendly and adorable or maybe it is my personality and interacting. Nevertheless, I will be back here soon enough. Produce was fresh. Ethnic selections were decent. Even sugar free orange water cookies that are Voortman. Interesting. Also make sure you grab the BIG basket when you walk in because it has wheels and you will just drag it behind you as you traverse through the aisles. read more

There have been a few disappointing occasions where I've visited this Foodtown location, and I'm always being scrutinized or watched. This only happens when I go in with my baby stroller. I felt like a poor piss criminal and humiliated when one of the managers asked me where did I get the items from? (they were at the bottom of my stroller) I said Union Market (because I can AFFORD it I'm an educated mother with a CAREER). It's only when I have a stroller I'm followed. It's sickening!!! Respect mothers and don't just assume we are stealing and poor. I'm a paying customer and want to shop in peace. When I go inside without the stroller, there's no problem. And I have a nice one at that. If you go with your Uppababy, yoyo, or any high priced name brand they will still keep a hawks eye on you for potential profiling. Be aware and tell the manager to hold your shopping bags from outside and make it known that you refuse to be profiled and disrespected. I'm never going back again, I'll stick with Ideal and Union Market, thank you. read more

Love this place. I have a grocery store closer, but I like this one. Good prices, produce is fresh, never had a bad experience with meat, and the frozen food isn't freezer-burned like some other stores I've gone to. Incredibly, incredibly nice manager, and the cashiers are always sweet. Only annoying thing is in order to get the sale prices you need one of those little cards you put on your keychain, and they don't seem to have a "store card" that they'll scan for you if you don't have one. It's easy enough to get one though. It also may have changed, that happened right at their grand opening and the card situation seemed a little chaotic. The owners of Foodtown of Prospect Heights are doing a great job during the Covid 19 crisis. My friends around the country are all complaining about empty shelves and overcrowding at their grocery stores, but this Foodtown has been consistently well stocked and is limiting the number of shoppers. They've set up socially distant lines for checkout, the workers are all wearing masks and gloves, and now they've put up plastic shields between shoppers at the card swipers and workers. I feel comfortable about being able to get what I need and about my safety there. Great work! read more

It is impossible to say enough good things about Foodtown on Vanderbilt Avenue. The aisles are wide, clean and always well-stocked. There was an item I wanted, and didn't see on the shelf, one of the managers, Ehab, made sure it was in store within a couple days. Other managers, Shadi and Nadir, have since done this for me again and again; always with a smile, and "it's my pleasure." The cashiers and floor staff are always friendly, personable and know their customers by name. Rare is night I don't have to pick something up after work, and I always leave with a huge smile. They also give back to community with annual fairs, holiday specials, giveaways and raffles. And I always save with the Foodtown reward card. The bonus is that Foodtown is family owned, and they make you feel like you're part of their family. read more

I just had the most disturbing experience in this store. I just finished running errands, picking up items from the pharmacy and local stores, however I needed a few more things, so I stopped in Foodtown in the hope they would have them. I entered the store with my bags and proceeded to grab the four items I needed. An older man that I saw at the front of the store goes down one of the aisles that I was in and I say excuse me to him. As I am paying for my items the same man comes up to me to say next time I need to tell the staff when I enter with other items. I proceeded to tw him that security should have said something when I entered the store. This was definitely him racially profiling me, because I am a young black woman. Well, my local Foodtown (one block from my home) was bought out by Keyfood. Good riddance! I stopped doing grocery hauls when Food Bazaar opened, which is about three and a half blocks from my home. The prices in Foodtown are ridiculous. With arthritis aching my bones, I had to cross the Grand Concourse to spend HALF for a haul than Foodtown. In a neighborhood like mine, hiking prices will cause you to go elsewhere. The supermarket was only good for picking up an item or two, as if the store was a bodega. I walked into Keyfood this morning, and the prices were decent. I understand why they sold out. It may be an okay supermarket for people who work on Wall St., but in poor neighborhoods like mine, Foodtown took advantage of the residents here. People like myself, with limitations, cannot afford to leave the neighborhood, but force themselves to go to be able to stretch their money. read more

On my way to a friend's house, I stopped by this location after going to my usual (Union Market on Union & 6th - fantastic) to look for a particular brand. Prices are hiked up, the membership card never gets you a discount, they do too much floor work in the way of the patrons during business hours and about two months ago I saw one of the owners flossing his teeth at the registers. Foodtown here in Prospect Heights (632 Vanderbilt Ave -- at Park Ave in Brooklyn) is our GoTo grocery store, as it has been for a lot of years. But now, they've worked out a system for reliable deliveries that I recommend you try if you are in Lockdown or self-isolation or just can't get out. My contact there is Ned. Here are details that may help you as you get up to speed with this: * Contact them thru their email (Foodtown632@gmail.com) to confirm they can handle a food delivery that day (or to learn approximately when they can "shop" for you. -- Note, they get back in touch if there is a significant delay beyond what they initially commit to.) * Email them your list (including brand and particular product type if needed). Specify the quantity and size of each item (eg, "1 jar orange marmalade, approx. 10 oz; prefer Smuckers, but other brand and size will do" or "5 Red Delicious apples, or any other type that's available"). * When they've gathered the ordered items, the Shopper calls with questions (or alternative options if your preference is not available). * When all is gathered, they ring it up on their cash register and then the Shopper calls me with a total and to get my credit card info. Clean store, friendly staff, good selection at reasonable prices. (For the area.) This is my favorite grocery store. If they don't have something I want they can order it. I love their selection of dried fruit, but I wish the mango was better. The other issue is their rotisserie chicken. It sucks. Other than these two things, this store is amazing.
