Living in Sheepshead Bay at the moment, there aren't many options to choose from... at all. I *could* drive all the way to Bay Ridge for the halal carts on 86th St. and 5th Ave. But that's a 15 min drive I'd rather not take - especially when I'm home in my jammies. But I do live in Sheepshead Bay, and when my ingenious boyfriend brought up the fact that he saw a halal cart on Sheepshead Bay Rd, I was *driven*, at 11pm, to go try some. Well, here's the verdict... What the heck just happened?! FIRST of all, the servings are pathetic. For $5, I got HALF the portions of the halal cart food I get in the city for $6! And in a lower-middle class neighborhood like Sheepshead Bay, that most definitely shouldn't be the case. SECOND, the hot sauce isn't hot at all. Halal carts are known for their awesome hot sauce, and this guy just seems like he poured some Franks Red Hot over my order of chicken and rice. THIRD, the white sauce - which I normally like a LOT of - is completely flavorless! This is, by far, the worst halal food from a halal cart that I've ever had. He will hook it up and make sure you get your $5 dollars worth of food. His white sauce is superb, and if you want it seasoned any way, he will do so in order to "Best serve the customer". The taste is also amazing, along with the barbeque sauce. You can't go wrong with this. Convenient enough, he is in front of the train station, Elmhurst Ave where the M and the R train go.

The plantains were unfortunately, kind of burnt and the beans were also pretty flavorless. Cuban food should be fun and exciting and full of flavor! Sorry Bongo Bros, but you were a disappointment :(. I actually heard of this place through foodtoeat.com if anyone wants to check it out. There are a lot of other cool street vendors on the site. I like experimenting with food carts so it's pretty useful for that.

They host several events throughout the summer, bringing together an incredible lineup of vendors offering just about everything you can imagine featuring ube! From savory dishes like ube paella with its beautiful purple rice to delicious desserts and unique treats, there was so much to explore and taste. One of my personal favorites was the ube mango sticky rice which was absolutely delicious! There were so many creative dishes and combinations that made it exciting to walk around and discover something new at every turn. I love Filipino cuisine and am already familiar with many of its flavors, but I still got to try so many things I probably wouldn't have come across otherwise. That's one of my favorite things about food festivals: discovering new dishes, exploring different vendors, and stepping outside your usual food choices. The festival had a fantastic turnout, with plenty of vendors, lots of people, and beautiful weather that made the entire experience even better. The atmosphere was lively, the food selection was impressive, and there was no shortage of delicious things to try. If you're a fan of Filipino food, ube, or simply love discovering unique foods and supporting local vendors, put Ubeland on your summer festival list! I've been twice now, with the hours usually from 11am-6pm. I highly recommend arriving early, as lines can get long about an hour after opening. There is always a great mix of food vendors, including some grilled savory bites, lots of Ube centric desserts and booths serving fresh Ube drinks like bubble teas, juices and ice cream floats. Usually, there are also jewelry and art vendors included as well. I highly recommend checking out this festival when they have another event in the city and exploring the wonderful Filipino cuisine showcased by the featured small businesses.
