Well... on this beautiful MLK day, I had the day off and the opportunity to try "Our Heros" food truck. The theme of the truck is to honor our country's men in uniform. Nothing wrong about that, right? The truck serves a variety of hero sandiwiches, salads and soups that stick to your bone. At first glance, may not seem like someone to special, but after trying to food they do an excellent job. Every single item that I tried was clearly made with a lot of care and were downright delicious. I had the: Eggplant Sandwich: Eggplant cutlets were cooked perfectly and the marinara sauce was damn good. I'm a big time snob when it comes to eggplant parm sandwiches and this one definitely stacks up with one of the better ones I have ever had. Portions were also huge as the Hero was pretty close to a footlong. Meatball Slider: This was something I probably shouldn't have eaten based on my New Year's Eve resolutions, but I'm glad I am weak-minded, because this one was great as well. Meatball was juicy and spiced just right. I could have aten two of these and been done for the meal. Chicken Vegetable Soup: I wasn't expecting much, but this soup was about as good as you could possibly make Chicken Vegetable Soup. It was that GOOD. Tasted like it was simmering over a stove for days. Overall a great job. I can't wait to try the other items on the menu... I'm sure I'll have dreams about that sausage and peppers hero! I don't know if they are going to stay in this spot for a long time, but I hope they do. The guy behind the truck graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and has been in the restaurant business for 25 years... it really shows in the quality and taste of the food. Here is their twitter address: https://twitter.com/#!/OurHerosTruck

"Today's Special: Roast beef hero with Mozzarella and gravy on garlic bread" dang that sounds good! The sandwich was a pretty hefty size and ran me $9. The garlic bread was a 9/10, soft, grease your fingers buttery and gave the aroma of fresh garlic, yummmm. Things went down hill for me when I noticed my roast beef was still a bit pink (think frites and meat burgers). I know that works for most people but I need my meat cooked well. I would definitely try the truck again because they give you quality food. I can't wait to try the crabcake sliders.

Thankfully I didn't chip my tooth or anything. Also house chips come with a sandwich but to substitute to fries is $2 extra! A little pricey, I'd be ok with like $1. Plus the chips are very soft and tasted too charred/burnt. These are chips, not steaks. Lastly, there was like one spoonful of coleslaw on the sandwich. Literally I had a bite, and there was no more coleslaw on the sandwich.

The truck was well designed with a rather expansive menu for a food truck. Being a new food truck I asked them what would be the best thing to order, then promptly (and foolishly) ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich. Although the seasoning on the crust of the chicken was good, there were a few other problems with the sandwich. The chicken meat seemed really dry and the crust itself was a bit darker than I would like. I did like that they included chips, but I'm partial to salt and vinegar. Some of the chips seemed like it was saltier than the others. For an accompanying side, I ordered sweet potato fries. The fries were unsalted, stuck together, and seemed a bit soggy (oil not hot enough?). Overall it seems to me that Sandwich Bar Express definitely has some issues to iron out. The pricepoint was a bit high for the quality of food that I was given. They should definitely cut down on their huge menu and focus on perfecting a few choice items.

I typically get the Combination Gyro, but everything there w lamb or chicken will be amazing !! This place stands out so much compared to all the other famous Halal trucks I've tried (including Halal Guys and the Royal Halal Grill) I think it's sauce is actually spicy and the meats are so high quality and fresh :)) He also always gives us extra fries / falafel to try with our meal Since I moved out of new york, I miss this place so much, and I'll always get it whenever i come back!

As a result, it is much better quality. The lamb is actually cut from a spit like in restaurants and tastes fresher and is juicy - not dry and old like carts that store their meat in coolers. The rice and veggies are also more freshly prepared. And, the chicken or lamb with rice is still only $5. Also, as a bonus, the guy here usually gives you french fries and a falafel ball when you get a platter. This is easily the best halal food in this neighborhood.

My favorite was the white sauce and BBQ sauce but there a few others to choose from. Grilled chicken is perfection, I don't know how he gets it so juicy and delicious, also love that its not over seasoned like many carts out there just plump juicy pieces of chicken. The grilled veggies usually consist of broccoli, carrots, onions, bell peppers, and sometimes a surprise here and there. The salad is either Romain lettuce or mixed greens - I ALWAYS choose mixed greens for my salads but the Romain actually works much better for the big hot pieces of chicken and veggies, you also get tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, feta cheese and a grape leaf thingy. It is a healthy meal but with all the sauce we get it drenched in I'm thinking its not so innocent. Not a lot of places I crave and could eat all the time but this is for sure one of them! Its a massive meal that fills me up all day and all for under $10! :) The guy who owns it is such a sweatheart, he always remembers us and our orders and always serves up some adorable smiles!

The guy who owns the cart is super nice and serves really excellent food. And, what I love the most is he makes his own green sauce, which is a Pakistani-style mint and coriander sauce. I slather it on his knishes, with a little hot sauce for zing, and they are amazing. Sometimes I get really decadent and do red, green AND white sauce, which is also pretty heavenly. His prices are great too. $3 for a knish, $1 for a water bottle. Haven't tried the lamb yet, but it's next on my list. The cart is right across the street from Zucotti Park, among a bunch of other food carts that I can't vouch for one way or the other. His is the second cart down from Liberty Street. Check it out next time you're Occupy-ing, or bargain hunting at Century 21!

A halal truck in Sheepshead Bay that I can finally trust will give me my bang for my buck!…read more To be honest, I haven't tried too many halal trucks in Sheepshead Bay because (1) there aren't many of them and (2) the ones that do exist do not look too great. Typically, I would trek all the way to Bay Ridge on 4th Ave. to get some good halal, and I know that's a very long distance, but I swear I was crazy hungry every time I went! Anyhow, I did a little research online and BAM! Sammy's was the best and most rated halal cart on Yelp so I needed to check it out. My wife and I swung by, on a casual Sunday morning, and it was exactly where it was supposed to be located, on the corner of Coney Island Island Ave. and Brighten Beach Ave. As expected, there was no one waiting on the line on the busy street. What was surprising was that we were only charged $5 for each box of food! In the year of 2018, it's like finding gold when you find a halal cart that still sells chicken/lamb over rice for $5. By now, most carts are at $6 or even further north of that. So the verdict? Excellent quality! Being native New Yorkers, we considered ourselves halal cart food connoisseurs and Sammy's was right on with the best of them. We had a lamb over rice and a chicken over rice box and the meats were hot, fresh and tasty. The rice was also cooked perfectly. Besides the flavors, we loved the big portions too. We both added barbecue and white sauce onto our boxes of rice and the sauces were exactly as we have had elsewhere. Tip: Yes, barbecue and white sauce are the combination of sauces to go with! (not hot and white sauce) The bottom line is that you can trust the food quality and portions of rice from this halal truck. It's exactly what we were looking for. Best of all, now we no longer have to schlep ourselves to Bay Ridge for some good ol' NYC halal food because there's one right in our backyard!

The chicken was in identifiable juicy chunks and their sauces were legit the real deal. Today I had the chicken rice...and I was devastated. Like "The Halal Guys" assembly line carts throughout Manhattan and gentrified Brooklyn, the rice was radioactive-orange and tasteless, the questionable chicken was dry and gristly and the white sauce was -- I kid you not -- freakin' ranch dressing. I ate less than half but couldn't bring myself to finish it. Sigh. Another one bites the dust. Go to Gyro Express down the block. They have tandoori!

It apparently feeds 20 and only costs $130. I was doubtful of their estimates on how much it could feed, but the tray is packed to the brim and required two people to close. It's doesn't seem to be something that's ordered regularly because the team wasn't properly prepared to serve it to me. I.e. - a team member had to run to the local supermarket to buy a lid for the tray. I went in on a Saturday afternoon, arriving around 4 and left closer to 6. If no one is ordering a catering sized amount of food, it should be quick, with each customer taking 2-5 minutes. Unfortunately for everyone else while I was there, there were two people ordering trays. The food is great, but I don't know if I'd wait that long again when there are equally good alternative options where I won't have to wait in the sun. Plus, it's a rougher neighborhood and there's just a lot of impatient people who complain about everything. One lady in line was complaining about the staff handling cash and then handling food. I observed the staff frequently changing gloves. Same lady also got mad that one staff member was taking a lunch break while there was a long line of people waiting for food. The staff are people too, they gotta eat. Food - 8/10 Wait - 3/10 English -5/10 Other customers in line - 3/10

Granted, you are paying "gringo prices" but thankfully, the food isn't terrible--because you can't mess up a taco...or can you? I've only been here twice for lunch and other than the halal carts you can spot on every corner and your typical, run-of-the-mill pizza place, Calexico Cart is one of the cheapest food options in the area. $4 for a taco is pretty ridiculous but unless you can make the trip to a cheap joint in Alphabet City, this is pretty much your "cheapest" option for Mexican. The food is pretty decent. I've gotten a steak burrito bowl (Calexico Carne Asada) and while it wasn't amazing like Chipotle, the amount of meat I've gotten was great and it held me over for hours. The food is solid and given the shortage of variety for food trucks in SoHo, this is a good option if you're craving something easy, quick and legit, although the guy who handles all payments and hustles for the money with a handful of cash looks like a dive bar bouncer in his night shift and seems a bit fishy.
