I really love how clean and spacious this Food Basics location is, compared to the usual location I go to. Products are not difficult to find. The only issue I noticed was a patron had interrupted the cashier who was checking out my required goods. The patron was doing self checkout when she encountered a problem. But no staff was available at the self checkout section to help. The cashier couldn't help her, since he was dealing with me and others were also behind me. When I left, the patron was still waiting for help at self checkout, and boy did she NOT look happy. Perhaps they should consider more staff at the front during peak times of the day. read more

Where do I begin? The level of incompetence is exasperating!!! Went in to pick up 4 items, 4!!! First I went to the coin exchange as I had just cleaned out the bottom of my purse. Not a huge amount, just $4.30 , but hey, money is money. I grab my chit and picked up what I came for. Went to check out, total amount $10.65. I hand the cashier my chit to be deducted from my total. She says that it wasn't accepted at Food Basics, I tell her to call CS. She says they will redeem it. Ok , now I'm more than slightly annoyed. No one at customer service, there is a line 10 deep. Ten people ahead of me who are all very ticked off. One cashier doing double duty and not doing it very well. A manager was asked for repeatedly, no such luck. Forty minutes later I finally get noticed, guess what? She told me I should have redeemed my chit when I payed for my groceries...WTF!!!! I asked for the manager, she points to him, so I said may I have a word, his reply. I'm a little busy right now can you give me ten minutes....again WTF!!! He was pushing 2 buggies for heaven sake. 4 items...40 minutes!!! Never again!!! I expect some sort of resolution to such a disastrous situation. I imagine , judging by other complaints, mine will go unaddressed. read more

This is location is quite large. The interior is the most organized, but it carries everything you need, if you can find it. It has a 3rd party meat counter where the prices are reasonable. I always look check it out when I'm there. The 'feel' of the place is not the most inviting, you want to go in, get your stuff, and get out. read more

BAD Services! I have to put 1 star, in order to submit it. I barely shopped in Food Basics before. I went in and shopped this time, because I had been to next store for some essential pickup at the same plaza, and Food Basics is closer than Walmart. I bought some fruit and 3 bottles of Dish Detergent. And I walked to my car, found that I have a few bottles of detergent still in my car. So I realized I have too many, so I went back to Food Basics trying to return them, they said they were not accepting Return now. I told them I just walked out to the parking lot only. The staff was asking: did you step out the store? if yes, we can't do the return. I told her just couple mins before, my receipt was showing my time. She insisted as long as you walked out of the store, we could not refund. I understand that everyone is under COVID-19 precaution, the less contact/touching, the more safe. However, I could understand that food or bakery that not allowed to return, but not a bottle of detergent. It is unreasonable to do that. The staff's explanation was the contact reason about this NO RETURN policy, and the Boundary point was whether you step out of the store or not. Dish detergent is a cleaning product itself, and more people touched it in the store than I walked out with it for a few mins. Never had any good experiences in Food Basics at any locations. I would rather walking a bit further for Walmart next time. NO Food Basics anymore. read more

In the Major Mac supermarket battle Freshco has been kicking FB's ass most of the last 3 years with it's longer hours, bigger overall selection and historically better service & lineup management. However this Basics' has a handful of stronger points and has made some recent improvements over the past 12 months which keep it relevant. A few specific areas that warrant occasional attention: First Aid Isle: GTA best prices on bandages - Elastoplast 40pk $3.99 80pk $4.99 (seldom on sale but regular price already less than most competitors' sales...). Store brand disposable foam insoles $1.79. Bottle 70% Alcohol $1.79. In this category they generally beat Freshco, Walmart & the drugstores on most staple items. Household: If you're picky on toilet paper look out for the $6.99 Charmin promo, seems head office has shifted that deal to Basics so Metro can charge full price most of the time. Also good on sponges, brushes & scrapers. I second Diana C's note on the meat and exotic jams - this may be the only mainstream supermarket with multiple brands of Rosehip & Quince jam ( both SF and PODRAVKA). There's also a whole shelf dedicated Ghee including one that's just $3.99 for 500g, good for those who only use a little. I generally avoid big commercial breads, but FB's Stone Oven demi baguettes are really good, especially for entertaining. Stone Oven products taste like the same supplier which makes Metro's Premier Moison Country Bread, these are about as good as it gets apart from independent ethnic bakeries. This month I'm enjoying the Daia Tunisian Dates. These are the freshest North African dates I've bought in 15 months! Every store has Tunisian or Algerian Dates but for the past year they've all been hard, dry & sour, to the point you can tell just by touching & sniffing the cellophane wrap. Not sure how service goes when it's busy, I'm usually there on a Tuesday at 9:30 or a Sunday around 8PM and they've been doing a better job of having 2 lanes all the time and a 3rd when needed. Of course the fact they've lost many customers ironically helps with crowd management but I feel they have made some effort to improve in this respect. I've only abandoned my purchase once in the last 10 visits compared to my usual 40% ditch rate at supermarkets in general. Overall, still low end and struggling, but not a total write off. read more

Food Basics has really basic selections but I do expect that. I though was really impressed with the meat selection. The Butcher Shop at the back which they outsourced to Nosso Talho https://www.yelp.ca/biz/nosso-talho-toronto-4 has one of the best selection of meat in the area and at a reasonable price. You can either get their pre packaged items or order whatever cut and quantity from the staff directly. They even have a Mandarin/Cantonese/English speaking lady working there in case of any language barrier! So now I know where I can get my meat for my BBQ!! read more

The store opened well but went downhill more so since the new wage hike. They used to open to midnight now it's 10pm, less cashiers open on weekends so the line up of shopping carts go down the food aisle. So why do I keep coming back here? They stock really well when the flyer changes for sales. If you get first day pick you can get some good grade produce for a great deal. Ie) Huge corn in the cob in the boxes stating GMO free but by wknd it was reg size, organic raspberries for $1.88 until sold out. Butchery 5* - they can find/make cuts you need and will stock reasonable request. The only close place that has skirt steak cuts since requesting it, great for BBQ season! Fish monger 5* - very helpful and will filet your fish quickly, the main guy knows his fish and can help with your menu planning No fresh bakery here, but good bread selections, from naan, roti to baguette they have it. European selections here is the largest for general supermarket, I can find some jams and treats only the specialized European markets carry without the travel Public washroom -1*!!!! But when you got a kid that needs to go, hold your eyeballs steady and don't touch anything and sanitize. Best tip is come early when sale starts, look for a fast cashier not just the shortest line and try not to visit on a wknd afternoon and you'll be fine! read more

Food Basics on John Street near Bayview is not well kept. Often they have rotting fruit that they do not clear from the shelves or dairy products past their due dates. Look at their recent bags of clementines and you will see what I mean. Another thing, they do not respect the consumer laws. I bought a pineapple and the price rang up more that it was advertised on the sign in the store. The Consumer Act states that I should get it free if the price exceeds what it is being sold for. The store refuse to honour the Consumer act telling me that i used a self-checkout so it does not count. Huh? read more

Dropped in because I was in the area to pick up some ground beef and mushrooms. Checked the expiry date for December 25th before I purchased. I took out my groceries tonight (December 23) to find the beef has gone bad (meat was grey plus smelled terrible) and the mushrooms were all black. Either the butcher was playing dying games with with meat or the fridge temperature was not kept to regulations. It's too far for me to go back to file a complain with the manager. Disgusting and wasted my money. Buyers beware!!! read more

This is my regular grocery store. The selection is typical of bargain grocery stores. Produces are sometimes cheaper than the No Frills at Warden and Hwy 7, another regular grocery store of mine. The butcher section has good beef, really. There is a decent selection of ethnic groceries, such as a variety of Mexican bottled salsa from Mexico (shame on No Frills). The bonus is the Tim Horton's on site. Lastly, the store is not dirty, but I feel that it can be cleaner/brighter. Is it time for a store-wide deep scrub? P.S. French's ketchup is sold here. read more

Formerly Metro supermarket. They change the branding to Food Basic early this year. They have more friendly price then Metro before, since they are facing a lot of competition around like Walmart and Fresh Co nearby. Everything's is good except there is not enough cashier, even in the rush hour, they only have 2-3 cashier open, and it make a super long lineup for paid. Need to improve! read more

Food Basics replaced the former Metro at this location. Came here to purchase some produce as it was on my way home from running an errand. Prices are on the low end (hence Basics), and the value is quite good. Food quality is also great for the price you pay. Weird thing is, however, I bought a banana stack from here 3 days ago that was completely green (I had bananas remaining but the price was good so I decided to purchase one), but today it's still not ripe. It was also quite hard to chew. No problem with the cashiers at all, but I didn't come at a busy time. Maybe coming at a busy time is in order for a more thorough review? read more

Generally decent selection of food but they tend to run out of sale items quickly. Watch expiry dates as old, expired items not always removed in timely manner. Often short of cashiers creating line ups read more

Newly renovated, this Food Basics replaced the 24-hr Metro that was previously here (here and losing money, I'll bet!) The great thing is that they've kept up the late hours, and FB closes at 12am. Perfect for when I'm finished my dinner, and I just want to wander the aisles. This FB is unlike the others I've been to, like the East York Town Centre, in that it still has that new feeling to it. Everything still a bit glossy, not so run down. Great prices, as usual, and not a difficult layout to understand. Also great is the Butcher Shop, where they have pretty good deals on fresh meat! Downside - somehow it retains that distinctive Food Basics lighting, where there's a depressing fluorescent cast on everything. Ugh. Otherwise? Great place for cheapie grocery shopping! read more

I went today to grab some bread and milk. I was looking for the milk advertised in the flyer but couldn't find it. I asked this lady who was working there and she literally walked right pass me. I thought she didn't hear me the first time so I said a little louder excuse me miss and she turned around bothered and pointed at the young man stocking up the shelves to help me instead. I asked him who that lady was so I could report her to management for being unnecessarily rude and neglectful towards customers. He told me she is the manager Jen, lol. If this is their manager what can you expect from the other associates. Yeah their products are good but service is absolutely trash and I will not be coming back again. read more

Now you ask why American businesses are more successful? Because they're far more customer oriented to their clients ...I bought 2hanging flowers of 8.99 each and throw the receipt as I couldn't imagine they'll die in less than 2 weeks in spite of good care! I took them and they still have barcode on them but they even refused to scan it without receipt...and didn't accept to give me store credit even ...moral of the story : I tried to support you but bye Foodbasic...I'll remain loyal customer of Costco and Walmart! read more

I have always shopped at Food Basics , some staff are nice some aren't nice specially when this covid19 started. They put a sign near the cashier but they are too small for me to read since am a senior citizen, no indication where to line up and when I made a mistake going to the cashier without realizing there was a line up at the aisle, she shoo me like a dog barking. They limit you with 2 items but no signage anywhere but when I questioned about the mango 3 for $5 is allowed so it's conflicting; she wouldn't give me an answer. Customer service is completely gone because they assumed people will buy anyway. Everyone becomes very unfriendly and grouchy as if you have covid. My advice is for you not to go to work , stay home You are not helping , you are just making me more nervous, am sure others need your job more than you do. So, folks if you don't want this aggravation go to FRESCO , they are more accommodating and no limit on goods. And, they are fully stocked. read more

Never enough cashiers but today was the worst. I will no longer go here. The management needs to undergo customer service training. I was asked to move all my groceries from one belt to another while the cashier changed shifts and her pass card was no longer working on the cash. Apparently at the suggestion of the supervisor who knew that the customer (me) had loaded everything. I get this if the line were closed before I started unloading. But it had all been loaded and ready to be rung through. And to ask a customer to do that when it was a mistake on their end. Yeah, no. You finish the order for a paying customer then you close. My last transaction there. Pathetic. read more
