Mustekala is a pleasant restaurant located in the San Felipe neighborhood of Oaxaca. It had been on…read moreour list for some time and we were not disappointed. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating. We chose outdoor. Indoors has about 10 tables of varying size (we did not explore the inside). Outside is a very large area mostly dedicated to children activities. We saw a number of shaded/tented areas with a large number of tables. Since it was mid afternoon, we decided to have a late lunch rather than a dinner. My wife had Baja style fish tacos (3) and I ordered the Rib eye tacos (4). Both were excellent, but the Baja style won. Easily a 5, while the Rib eyes were 4.5. We don't often see Baja style tacos here. We also had a Dorado ceviche. Ceviche was very good as well. It included black olives, but they were easy to remove and did not overpower the fish. A basket of breads and tostadas with cranberry butter, caramelized and pickled onions, rounded it all out. They have a nice selection of mescal based cocktails and a standard list of tried and trues. They also have a modest selection of wines. Service was professional. Covid precautions were in place. If we could change anything, we would suggest an updated cocktail selection and a scaled back menu. We are looking forward to going back for dinner and more tacos.

In many trips to Mexico we have yet to find good, flavorful and savory beef. Just the way it is. The La Esquina Gaucha is in the San Felipe area of Oaxaca City up higher than the city center (Zocolo) on a surrounding hill. More upscale homes and businesses are among the treed and landscaped roads. And traffic is not as hectic as in the city. The restaurant has a number of dining areas. Most look out on gardens so the setting is tranquil. The menu is good, straight forward and offers more than beef. We were surprised to find fresh fish, octopus carpaccio and even empanadas. Lots to choose from. Service is excellent and on the formal side. Very attentive wait staff. Chef comes out to circulate among the tables of guests, which is a classy act. Full bar and an excellent wine list. And there are a number of decent wines that you can order by the glass. English is spoken so it is a comfortable and less taxing experience that dealing with the language issues. Parking is valet and the charge is minimal (I think about 35 pesos) and it is put on your bill. So easy. A really nice place for an upscale meal that is outside of the more standard Mexican meals. Treat yourself.
