In many trips to Mexico we have yet to find good, flavorful and savory beef. Just the way it is. The La Esquina Gaucha is in the San Felipe area of Oaxaca City up higher than the city center (Zocolo) on a surrounding hill. More upscale homes and businesses are among the treed and landscaped roads. And traffic is not as hectic as in the city. The restaurant has a number of dining areas. Most look out on gardens so the setting is tranquil. The menu is good, straight forward and offers more than beef. We were surprised to find fresh fish, octopus carpaccio and even empanadas. Lots to choose from. Service is excellent and on the formal side. Very attentive wait staff. Chef comes out to circulate among the tables of guests, which is a classy act. Full bar and an excellent wine list. And there are a number of decent wines that you can order by the glass. English is spoken so it is a comfortable and less taxing experience that dealing with the language issues. Parking is valet and the charge is minimal (I think about 35 pesos) and it is put on your bill. So easy. A really nice place for an upscale meal that is outside of the more standard Mexican meals. The beef is excellent quality cooked exactly how you want it, and of course they serve you chino churro which is awesome with the meat but I also like it for the empanadas. Again don't forget to try their sangria, which is awesome as everything else on their menu. The service is great and the decoration even better. We were there a few months ago and our 3 yr old started to get a bit impatient and the waitress came and gave him a lollipop & obviously calmed him down enough so we could enjoy our meal.

I've been to four other Brazilian steakhouses (all in the US) and I couldn't help comparing this to them. It has a nice, formal atmosphere. We went there for lunch around 1pm and there were only two other tables. Everyone was dressed in rather casual clothes. However, that might change at night. The salad buffet had a good selection, but it was a little small. They had a few different types of lettuce salad, noodle salad, etc. Also, they had rice, mashed potatoes, potato wedges, watermelon, and more. I really enjoyed the mashed potatoes and Cesar salad. The mashed potatoes tasted like they were made with chicken stock or something. I'm not sure. After we finished the salad bar, the meats stated coming out. Most of the beef was too tough and well done for me so I asked them if we could get it medium and they complied (for the most part). My favorite is the pichana. I always love the flavor and salt on pichana at Brazilian restaurants and it was very good here. Also, la piña con canela (pineapple with cinnamon) was amazing! The best! I loved it. I ate too much of it. Did I mention the pineapple? I was a little disappointed that they didn't have the traditional cheese bread (which I'm addicted to) or the bananas. However, they had garlic toast with cheese and the special pineapple as substitutes. My only complaint is that it took forever to get the check once we had finished. We asked for it and then waited around 15 minutes at an empty table. It's really expensive for Oaxaca (269 pesos per person for lunch), but it's cheap compared to Brazilian steakhouses in the US. We pay $50 usd per person for lunch in the US, so this seemed like a good deal.
