We had a great experience with Fon's Canines two-week board and train program for our dogs. One of the trainers, Laurie, kept us updated with pictures, videos, and progress reports, which gave us peace of mind knowing our pups were doing well. We especially appreciated that the first day focused on fun and bonding with Ricky, the trainer, to help build trust before the official training began. Even though the program was structured, our dogs were treated with great care. One of our dogs has severe hip dysplasia, and the trainers were very mindful of her limitations and adjusted accordingly. The results have been amazing -- our dogs no longer pull, and walks are so much more enjoyable. The trainer also took time to thoroughly explain the techniques to us. We have already used two hours of the four follow-up hour sessions included with the program, with Ricky, in our home, and it was incredibly helpful. We look forward to the remaining sessions. We have lived here for 60 years and FINALLY boarded our dog there. A one year old pup! We were visiting in Mexico to a Michelin rated place with a shelter that she "Dory" came from. She is a very playful and a sweet dog that we have had for 10 months. Anyway, we received a pic of her the day we were returning and she had a gash in her back. Upon bathing her they found it and I asked what they were going to do. They said it wasn't their job and they don't know how it got there. We came home, got her, and it was an inch and a half long gash on the top of her back, they said they thought I was poop. Oh, it was puss and blood coagulated and they didn't see it? Sound pretty inattentive to us. We had to take her to the Vet in PB and she said it was probably from another dog. They had to flush it out get rid of the infection and sew it up with 4-5 stitches and $1000 later, she's fine. So much for their care and the $1500 we spent for a four day stay! We have boarded our cat, Olive, with Fon Jon's twice now. Both times have been an absolutely fantastic experience ! Minah and Anthony always go above and beyond. Olive gets a little stressed for the first few days then settles, and Minah has been amazing with her! Going as far to sitting with her at lunchtime (Olive loves company while she dines!) and providing other options at meal time. Minah communicates with us very quickly regarding care, any questions we may have or to provide updates on Olive's stay! We got our dog from Man K-9 and met with the trainers from Fon Jon Pet Care, and I've never been more impressed. They are so helpful and thoughtful and responsive to your specific dogs and your family and your environment. We met with Fon and Ricky on different occasions, and they were both just seriously incredible. Understood our dog and personalized their training for her. THEY LET MY DOG ESCAPE AND NEVER CALLED ME TO APOLOGIZE! DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG HERE! I took my husky to daycare here for about a year. My husky has separation anxiety because she is a rescue. She was nervous about daycare. I asked if she could leave her collar on because she has a GPS tracker on it. I had to speak to the manager about this because they take them off for "safety". I was assured Mimi's would stay on. I reminded the staff every time I dropped her off that her collar stays on. One day I got a call from them while I was at work and the lady was frantic and said that my dog had escaped. Apparently another dog was being walked out to their owner and mine just followed without being noticed by the employee (their employees don't take their job seriously). I said ok, let me look on her GPS, you kept her collar on right?... no they took it off. I frantically left work knowing that my dog will not go to a stranger and that their facility is right next to the 5 freeway. I thought that the next call I would get was that my dog was roadkill. I called everyone I knew in town and had a search party out for my dog. They sent ONE employee. Luckily the next call that I got was from the humane society saying that someone had wrestled my dog to the ground as she was crossing traffic on balboa. I never received a call from them apologizing. They comp'd her stay THAT DAY. This is also the second review that I have left because they deleted my last one. These people do not care about your beloved animal. Proceed with caution. Below is how she looked when she came home. Her coat is usually bright white. read more

STAY AWAY Not one to leave a review... but in this case here we go. My fiancé reached out to Fon Jon grooming inquiring about having our Malamute/Husky groomed at the location, she had a few questions (as anyone does when trying a new groomer) our main questions were in regards to the process and what it entails. Our main concern was that they would not shave our dog because it's really bad for a husky skin to shave. We then called when he was ready to be picked up after being there for 4 hours, and the employee had told us that they had not even started on him and were getting ready to begin, so we waited. When we picked him up, we noticed that something was wrong. He kept on yelping in pain when he lifted his leg to urinate and stretch. We took a closer look at his stomach and then noticed that he had SEVERE inflammation and two areas that were beginning to bleed. He wouldn't eat, refused to go outside, and only wanted to hide in areas he couldn't be disturbed, so we went to the next step and went our vet. The vet quickly diagnosed that he had an infection on his stomach from being shaved to the skin, and prescribed a few antibiotics, rubs and anti inflammatory meds. $480 later (and a lot of pain) my fiancé decided to call Fon Jon's. She called explaining what was going on with our dog and how is at the vet, and the man that answered had this to say... "we knew you were going to be a problem considering how many questions you were asking before we groomed him" and then hung up. We're going to work in the best of our ability to make sure nobody we know/has a furry friend ever visits this clinic again. read more

Let me begin by stating I used Fon Jon for decades for dog boarding. The staff was lovely and attentive - especially Laurie and Rachal. They boarded my dog from when he was a pup until a couple of years before he passed at age 15. This is no longer the same Fon Jon... I am not sure if there was a change in ownership, but instead of encouraging adoption they are now selling puppies on their website(!) from a breeder. They no longer take dogs over the age of 9 - my last dog was immensely healthy through age 13, and once he wasn't I stopped boarding him. It's one thing to say "no dogs requiring medical care" or "dogs 9 and older no group play" but considering certain breeds live longer, they're basically saying "the second half of your dog's life, we are not interested." If this is the case why get your young dog used to the place unless you need it as a one-off? The main problem really though is the price. While their facility is one of the nicest in town, it's not the only one in town and over the last ten years the boarding prices have essentially doubled. It's no longer cost effective to board there which is a shame because of the staff and the facility. I am pretty sure the price increase is just greed as they have been in the same spot since the 1950s and own the land outright. Anyway, it's a shame as I now am taking my new dog to other places like Pawcommons which is half the price. If Fon Jon wishes to cater to the Real Housewives of La Jolla and their designer AKC certified breeder dogs only, that's fine. I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

Office staff is incompetent and rude. Gave them my drop off time multiple times. Then they were surprised, giving me an attitude, because I was there for an early drop off. They also needed to be reminded of the feeding schedule three separate ocassions. Their fees are outrageous and they have awful customer service. I definitely don't recommend this place. I have literally boarded my dog there for over a decade, I have paid $100s and $1000s every year and I trusted them. So now their new policy is cash or check or a 5% charge off credit card. Understandable as inflation and minimum wages etc. So last two times I paid cash. So they shouldn't have my credit card number. Randomly I get a $20 charge last week. Last time I used their services was dec2022 so at least a month ago... and I paid by check. The time before that I paid cash. So for them to still have my credit card number and randomly put charges on it really disturbs me. I called and they said it was a mistake and will refund me. That's the least they can do. How can you randomly charge a customers card when you're not even supposed to have it on file? I am sad to say I lost trust in fon jons and will be searching my bills to make sure they haven't been randomly charging me in the past 10 years. It's only $20 but there really shouldn't be even 1 mistakenly charged. They did not seem apologetic and offered a " refund". I am saddened this happened and the way they handled it wasn't really too reassuring. If you use Fon Jon's request them to remove your credit card number after boarding EVERY TIME. And check your credit card bill to make sure they haven't added random charges on there. read more

I signed up for the photo club (for a fee I was willing to pay to see my girl) and received 5-6 photos on the two days I chose. Their response to emails and return phone calls were very satisfying. Anthony was amazing at getting my 71 lb corso / pit bull (Big Paw Paw) in last minute boarding on a busy Thanksgiving weekend as a referral from a long time client Maxine. I read some referrals here about breed discrimination and I did not experience that at all. My dog is not neutered so we did opt for the one on one boarding option for the safety of other dogs so nobody ended up pregnant in the yard. Seems like a fair option to me. He was housed in his own yard and had play time in the yard one on one with a handler. They require all vaccines to make sure your dog is safe. When I left my dog there overnight I specifically asked what the communication is like because I've never had to board my dog before. As a dog parent I'm sure we all know pets are family and this can make us a little anxious. They assured me no news is good news. As nervous as that made me I trusted their ten years of experience and appreciated they communicated that to me in advance. He was returned to me the next day happy healthy and seemed to have a lot of fun. The staff seems to have a log of experience in the industry with training, pet care, animal behavior and obedience. I was very pleased with my stay. He will be coming back for doggy day care one on one. Please have elastic expectations while leaving your dog here. They are spending time looking after the dogs giving them individualized time and don't have time to do that if they are constantly having to call back frantic parents who want updates every 5 minutes. I'm working with Alex and he's great at helping you understand the process of training your dog. We all understand that dog training is for both the dog and the owner. I've had 6 prior dogs and I'm convinced that we'll have our best trained dog as a result of this effort with Alex. If you're too timid to become 'the Alpha' then make sure you get a little 'lap dog'. If you're going to have a dog over 40# then you're much better off becoming the alpha. It's invaluable to have him assess how you're doing, what to focus on and how to 'correct' the behavior. It's not terribly comfortable using the techniques for both the owner and pet - but it works. We've finished our 3rd (of 4 planned) lessons and everyone are amazed at the improvements.
