Great place for a beginner. They teach the basics and my son is having fun learning here.

As an adult who struggled with real panic…read moreand fear in the water, I never thought I'd feel comfortable--let alone confident--swimming. But this experience completely changed that. A huge part of that is thanks to Kelly, the owner. She is incredibly patient, calm, and intuitive as a coach. She meets you exactly where you are, never rushes the process, and somehow knows exactly how to help you push past fear without feeling overwhelmed. The environment is supportive, encouraging, and completely judgment-free--something that makes all the difference when you're learning as an adult. If you've ever been hesitant or afraid of the water, I can honestly say this place can help you overcome it. Exceptional facility, outstanding coaches. Grateful doesn't even begin to cover it. Highly recommend.

Our coordinators, Nancy and Jimena were awesome too, always easy to reach and made sure the whole party ran smoothly without us having to stress. The front staff was very welcoming and helpful during our first lesson. I love that the pool is warmed. It made him entering the pool so much easier. The small free play area for before and after the lesson is amazing for a fun and continued water exposure. The lessons are only 20 minutes which is can be nice for younger learners but also a challenge when we are constantly having to build a relationship with a new teacher. We are enrolled in the semi private lessons (1 teacher 2 kids). The first lesson we had was with Jose. He did a great job going at my son's pace and getting him comfortable with the water and trying to build a rapport with him. Unfortunately the following week he was not available so we took a lesson with Fransisco. It took 15 of the 20 minutes for my son to warm up. Fransisco D firmly told me I need to be consistent and sign up for the same teacher every week. I had multiple cancellations before finally getting our third lesson which went well. Due to availability again I gave up being consistent with the teachers my son had met so far and signed up with Toni who had fantastic reviews only for her to cancel the morning of. I understand life happens but it's frustrating when Waterworks tells me I need to be consistent with teachers but makes it's difficult to do so. I'm hopeful that we will find a teacher who can be consistent for my son.

Our daughter has been taking swim lessons here for three summers in a row. At the end of this…read moresummer (at her final lesson), we found them to be ineffective in assessing and communicating back to us our daughter's skill level. We don't know what skills she mastered, and what skills are remaining to pass to the next level. This program seems to provide weekly swim practice (because the teachers are very nice), but not weekly swim *learning*, because the feedback & awareness of skills mastery is missing. Swim lessons are an investment, and our expectation was to have some degree of feedback and skills awareness at the end. UPDATE: Staff texted thorough comments in response to our request for skills feedback. We appreciated that they took time and care to do this. --- Overall, the program was good for getting our then 4-year old comfortable in the water, and being able to back float and swim to the wall. However, at her current more evolved stage (now 7, learning how to breath from the side and stroke consistently), we yearn for teachers that themselves demonstrate and model HOW in the water, and provide targeted feedback for practice. Our daughter had no idea what the techniques ideally look like, what motions to imitate. After ~10 weekly lessons this summer, our daughter wasn't able to advance effectively to the next level. Sadly, for her "advanced beginner" stage, progress wasn't compelling enough for us to continue.

I took Tom's "DSLR/M Jumpstart" class this June. Glowing review follows…read more.. But first, a bit about me: I've been a latent photography maven since my early teens, starting with a Polaroid and quickly graduating to my dad's old Bell & Howell 35mm. As things often do, it found itself on a shelf until the advent of the iPhone and ever-present cameras. Discovering that I enjoy taking nice shots, but always knowing I could do better, I finally splurged on a "prosumer" Canon mirrorless. Not wanting to let it be relegated to the same fate as the B&H, I immediately went looking for some classes, and found Tom literally one neighborhood away. I immediately liked his no-nonsense commentary about how good photography connects us to our memories and what we experienced at the time, but also his keen level of humility; I think that's essential to being a good teacher, as hubris stands in the way of connection with students. When I arrived, Tom had a cozy kitchen table set up for three students, with brief handouts at the ready, and a table full of curios just begging for practice. Alas, one student was a no-show, but we had lively chat until Tom decided to get underway. There wasn't a single boring moment in the day; Tom immediately got both of us familiar with the controls on our fancy cameras, then started reviewing the basics of photography. It wasn't a theory class, per se, but he spent as much time as it took going over both how our cameras take photos, and how we perceive them. The room was set up for a simple PowerPoint-style presentation, but it was always in the background as we moved back and forth between our devices and discussion. Just setting expectations: about 75-80% of the class is "ground school" -- we worked with our cameras and settings indoors, practicing a bit on nearby objects, and then venturing outside for some practice. Tom made it fun, setting us up for a bit of a scavenger hunt in his back patio that's clearly designed to get us looking at the objects a little more deeply, and playing with focus and depth of field to achieve artistic effect. By the end of the day, I didn't feel like a "pro," by any stretch of imagination. But I did feel like I had the potential to get there. I haven't switched my camera back to "Auto" mode since the class. I've taken some lousy photos, and then realized what I'd done wrong. And I've taken some amazing shots. My only gripe about the class? It's too short. I left wondering, "ok, what next?" Tom offers a number of other opportunities like photo walks, and I'll be taking him up on them in the near future, but I definitely felt like there could have been a second day. That said, I think that's a good thing: the class achieves a "jump start" for new photographers, and leaves you wanting more.

It has been almost 5 years since I took Tom's DSLR jumpstart class, and the lessons I learned that…read moreday are still in use. The class really helped ignite my ability to properly set up my camera, but also how to adjust setting on the fly. Since his class, I have been published in multiple aviation books, blogs, newspapers, and magazines. Last Year I was an Editors Choice in the 2023 Aviation Week and Space Technology Photo edition Without Tom and his class I would no doubt be plodding away with my camera with the usual mediocre results instead of what I am shooting now. If you want to do more with your photography this one is an easy call. Give Tom and PhotoTrainer a try.
