She is in the 2 year old class and we just enrolled her in the 3 year old class for September. In addition I just enrolled her in their summer camp! This is not a daycare, but a school. When first arriving, my child was going through early intervention services for speech, vision, and occupational therapy. Her enrollment at the school only enhanced her learning and the staff at the Learning Tree have been top notch in her care and well being. She has thrived in their environment and I cannot imagine taking her anywhere else! She is babbling up a storm and no longer needs early intervention services under their care. Abe, Brett, Collette and the several attentive staff have become like my toddler's family while she is at school. I would highly suggest you stop by the school and speak with the staff, take a tour and speak with the parents. We count ourselves lucky we were blessed with such a great school for our child. It's the best beginning for her schooling we could ever ask for.

Pros: Small Class size - Student/Teacher Ratio is high. Four teachers to about 22 kids per class. Although, I am not clear on what licenses/permits each have. After School programs and camps - I have heard good things about them and the fact that they have them is a plus for many families. Large Classrooms - large classrooms with lots of light, many books, toys, and learning/ activity centers. Great Location - Located in Forest Hills Gardens. The school also has ample outdoor play space. Excellent Enrichment - The *PA WAS fantastic at fundraising, helping to support substantial enrichment opportunities (e.g., visiting nutritionist, visiting Noguchi Museum staff, winter/end of the year show, yearbook, etc.). Great Community - My experiences with the families has been extremely positive. The Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, and neighboring communities are replete with a diverse group of pretty friendly families who are very involved in their children's education. Cons: Non-progressive curriculum - If you are looking for a "progressive" curriculum that is "positive discipline" focused, then, in my opinion, you will not find much of that here. It is a problematic issue if they tout themselves as "progressive" school, which they did at the open house we attended. The school is play-based, in part, but with a lot of "structure" and "discipline" weaved in. There was a lot of prescribed art (not process based) and, overall, it's not child-centered enough. They like to say that they "borrow a little from here and a little from there" but, at its heart, it remains traditional. Punitive discipline- As in old traditional schools, they make the nursery kids line up and wait for their teachers before having them walk quietly into their respective classrooms. Kids are also separated based on gender, depending on the activity. Nursery school kids who were "disruptive" or "crying too much" or "emotionally distraught" were regularly taken out of the classroom, so as not to disturb the "learning" of the other kids. If you want to continue to tout yourself as progressive, then take a page out the DOE's mandate. Its two very helpful Early Childhood Learning Benchmarks effectively state that the learning in a nursery-school and pre-school should solely be focused on normalizing and validating kids' feelings and emotions, setting gentle limits to help kids develop a positive sense of self so that they can learn to manage their behavior positively when they are developmentally ready to. To enact a one-size-fits-all punitive approach has long been established as useless and harmful. Once we realized that our child was being regularly punished, we were only then told about their punitive behavioral management approach, which involved giving the nursery kids a "choice" to either comply or to sit alone in either a red or blue chair (deceptively called "cozy corner"). This "choice" would be given to the kids when they were unable to "get a hold of themselves," were disruptive by talking or calling out during say circle time or when they otherwise needed to "calm down." Such unreasonable expectations virtually guarantee, if not sets them up for, failure. What 3 year old do you know that can sit still or stay quiet on command? These approaches single the kid(s) out in front of all of their peers. It's a dunce cap 2.0. Such approaches can inadvertently teach kids nothing but shame and that they are "bad." It's false choice which essentially amounts to a "time out," is counter to progressive education, and it undermines nursery school kids' nascent sense of self-esteem. Leadership issues - Leadership needs to be reconsidered, and the school must give families a voice. *Dismantled PA: Unbeknownst to many, at the end of the year in which my child attended, the school just dismantled the PA. By most accounts I got wind of, parents were shocked and had zero say in that decision. Confusing Admissions Process - In my experience, admission requirments were poorly and inconsistently communicated. They do not have the same age cut-offs the DOE. Plus, you must submit a waitlist card for each program the year before to be on the waitlist to get in. Cost: I think it's expensive!

It has a synagogue on the main floor because the school rents the upper floor and basement which is where they have a gym. This is a private school without the uniforms and has lots of field trip activities and even puts on annual plays at Queens Theater in the Park. If you're in the neighborhood then this is a great place to bring your children to. The relationships you create here are extra strong and I am still friends with almost half my graduating class. First of all, with the amount of money you pay for tuition, the school has no nurse or a counselor on staff. If anything happens to your child they just send him or her to the principal where they give him or her a band aid and cold compress. They even made a 4-year old hold an ice-pack on her fore-head all day without a teacher's help. And may God help you if your child is a little strong-willed, they will not only treat the child as a plague, but you the parent also. I have never seen a school so intolerant as this school. My wife and I toured this place, and others, when we were checking out daycares. One of the biggest reasons why my wife and I chose this place is because the children seem like they have fun. When we visited, the kids were socializing and playing with each other. In other daycares, the children seem subdued and withdrawn and not as playful. In fact, some of the children recognize me now and walk up to me to say hi or share their toy when I go pick up my daughter. I think their friendliness is partly due to how they're treated here. My child loves this place. I enrolled my daughter when she was about 2.5 years old. There was of course and adjustment period, but shortly after two weeks, my daughter became used to the idea of coming here and even looking forward to it. I have no doubt the extra TLC that the staff gave her the first few weeks contributed to her feeling welcome. I think dropping my daughter off became harder for me than it was for her (conceal, dont feel). She's been enrolled here over a year now. She comes home with art projects that they do in class, I catch her singing songs that I know she learned while in school here. She tells me about her friends and the types of games they play. She recently told me that she needs to start bringing a toy for show and tell on Fridays. The staff here is very warm and considerate. Unlike other daycares where the teachers are college students or young adults, you can tell that the teachers here have children of their own. They will treat your child as if he or she was one of their own as well.
