I Am A Parent Who It's Son Is About To Graduate & I Have Some Regrets With This School. I Have A List Of Things That All Incoming & Future Parents Should See In The Comming Year.
1) The Schools PTA - The School States It Has A PTA (And It Does) But The Only Fundraiser They Do Is Mostly Candy Sale & Cupcake Sale Events. The School Does Not Even Announce When Is PTA Meetings. They Just Tell You See Our Calendar & Show Up. Lack Of Updates Towards The Entire School.
2) Foreign Language - My Son Is In A Class Who Takes Spanish. Students In Class 801 & 802 (AKA SP Classes Or Honor Classes) Take Korean & 803/04/05/06/06/08/09/10 Takes Spanish. The Spanish Teacher Is A Dictator For Her Students. Her Lessons Are So Wrong. Starting in the begin of the year she gave my child & mostly the entire 8th Grade (Except 801 & 802) Some unbelievable & stupid projects then useful expressions, Greeting, Farewells, etc. But her test & homework is unbelievable. Most of the kids are that Spanish class do nothing wrong & they get in trouble for no reason. I do not know what is going on due to my son does not take Korean classes
3) Computer Lab - I Visited The school at a PTA Conference & see how the computer lab is. A computer lab that students are breaking the entire system. Kids destroy keyboards, mouse, and Monitors. All Computers are not even connected to the printer they have with no ink. Also, there is no computer teacher. The computer teacher can be anyone from guidance towards a teacher that does not teach those students. I saw the schedule on the door & one 8th grade class has a teacher that is a 6th grade ELA Teacher. But The sad part is the students does not do anything. The only this student can do is Study Island, Cool math games (Depends on by the teacher or mostly after the State exams), & homework. Even with the NYCDOE (New York City Department Of Education) new computer science for all program, this school will not even serve computer science until the iPhone 10 come out.
4) Individual Education Plan (IEP) - If your child has an IEP DO NOT send your child to this school. No teacher or staff seems to care about the students. There is a teacher who always gets an ICT (Integrated Co-Teaching) Students and still pushes them to the limits, give ridiculous homework & gets at least 5 to 9 students in summer school.
5) The Principal - The principal does not want input and does not want anyone to know what is going on in the school. The principal (Mrs. Beirne) is truly lacking the mental compass to get this school's act together. Where are any principles or decent rules? This school is going down the drain, and no one is benefiting from this school. I feel that she hides because she does not want any contact with any of the students or parents; she always wants to be in control. And when you ask her a question, which she does not like she brushes you off in a rude way. She makes everyone feel uncomfortable and unwanted in her school. As a parent, I find that this school is extremely unwelcoming and a very cold school.
6) The Policy & Issues With Students - The students are not being supervised in common areas like the cafeteria, hallways, and schoolyard. There are bullying, smoking and bad behavior among some students that should be stopped instead of ignored. Where are the staff when kids are selling drugs, smoking in the playground, making out in the stairwells, and bullying other kids?? And the Dean, where and how did she ever get this job. The Current Dean Ms. Piccolo was a former ELA Teacher & really how did she ever get this job. Eats in front of the students, Text On Her Friend With Here Friends Who don't give a shit. Some children are targeted by the guidance and AP's for constant detention and suspension.
7) School Lunch - Grades 6 Eats Period 5 (11:20 AM - 12:05 PM), Grade 7 Eats Period 7 (12:55 PM - 1:41 PM) & Grade 8 Eats Period 3 (9:45 AM -10:30 AM). The School says it because there is a campus school due to The Disabled Elementary School (P233) & World Journalism Preparatory School (That is an another Middle School/High School) The cafeteria stinks & it's filthy. Plus the Cooks in the kitchen clean the tables at period 8 & hey don't bother when students are outside playing at recess. The shit where Leftover food that everyone thinks that the staff cleans the mess but they don't.
8) Communication - The School Has A K12 Phone System But The Problem Is They Don't Give Up-to-date Announcements. The only time the school gives us a call is announcements on Report Cards or something serious that happened at school. Last year on the 3rd day of school the school had to go into a SOFT LOCKDOWN to find a student that take ESL & the student does not understand anything. The school also calls if your child is in suspended, or in the office getting in trouble. The school staff is like babies they want to tell the parents to the students who did nothing wrong.
