I know it's been half a century since I was there; and in many ways my review may be irrelevant. The teachers are warm, attentive, and clearly passionate about early childhood education. The classroom environment is nurturing and engaging, with lots of hands-on learning, imaginative play, and opportunities for creativity. Our child comes home excited to share what he's learned and tells us so many things about his teachers (all good stuff) . We especially appreciate the school's emphasis on kindness, curiosity, and community. Communication with families is very good, and we always feel welcome and well-informed.

The level of engagement, socialization, early reading and math skills are on par with what is expected, and with a loving approach. My initial hesitations had more to do with the external appearance of the place (not particularly inviting), and after seeing how warm and enthusiastic it is on the inside, those anxieties have been put to rest. Twice a year the school allows parents the opportunity to sit inside the classroom and observe, and I've been consistently blown away by the focus exhibited by the children as they move through their work cycles, and how supportive and nurturing the teachers are, while also encouraging independence. The teacher to student ratio is very low, and our child receives a lot of individualized attention as a result. He is learning so much at such a young age and has made some wonderful friends. Volunteering at school allowed me to meet some great parents who became my best friends. Both my children started their education at SMCA from Pre-K. They always had very caring and dedicated teachers. I feel safe leaving my kids at school while I have to go to work. My kids love the school and their friends. My older son graduated from SMCA in 2022; his former teachers always greet him with a smile whenever he stops by his alma mater. SMCA offers a great after-school program led by Ms. Vicky, who knows all the children by their names and ensures they are well cared for. While in after-school, kids do their homework, play games, and work on art projects. The new principal, Mrs.Donahue, is an excellent educator; she is always there to support the students and teachers. She goes above and beyond to ensure our children get a quality education. The school offers regent's prep classes for 8th graders. There are various clubs (Darama, Lego, Prayer, YearBook) and extracurricular activities (piano, band, soccer, basketball, choir). SMCA organizes many family events where we get to spend time with other families (Christmas Show, Family Dance, Radio bingo, 100 Club, etc). St. Matthias Catholic School is a great neighborhood school.

She is very engaged and makes sure that learning Chinese is fun for them. She would play supermarket and would 'sell' fruits (Strawberries and grapes). She haded out paper money with Chinese numbers on them and children would have to use money to 'buy' fruit they like. In the process, they are encouraged to speak and count the names of fruits in Chinese and read the Chinese letter on the money. And they get to eat real fresh fruit that they 'buy'. So brilliant.
