I spent a good chunk of my life at various Floyd's General Stores across Kern County. As a kid, I'd tag along with my Dad and he'd show me the ropes on how to build and fix things yourself. From re-shingling a roof in the middle of summer, to painting a fence during Spring Break, I even helped restore wood floors and re-tile a shower. I'm appreciative of the things I was able to learn, and with each project would be the inevitable trips to Floyds. When it came to repairing some screens I remember my dad taking ours in to be repaired at Floyds. My mom made a comment that Floyd's was the cheapest and most reliable screen repair place in town - and 30 years later that comment stuck. We had been sitting on replacing the screen for our sliding door for over a year. I thought about getting a mobile repair person out but the cost was way too much and their customer service was pretty terrible. For $60-ish Floyds installed a brand new pet-safe (it's practically indestructible!) on our large screen. They were done in a day and just in time for this beautiful weather. Went in today for help replacing the knob on the dowel for my kids easel/desk. The staff was so helpful!!! They replaced the double sided screw and fitted it with a child safe thing-a-ma-bob (I have no idea what it was called). An easy fix for them and helped me out so much! Also got some keys made while they fixed up the dowel. Was really nice to see some fresh vegetable plants and herbs. May go back in a couple weeks to grab some for the next planting season! read more

So totally bummed that Floyd's made a change in their store and also with the people that work there. I remember the old Floyd's before the change in owners, where you could go and pretty much find anything you needed. If they didn't have what you were looking for one of the old timers working there would come up with a great idea to substitute. On this probably my last visit I needed to get a replacement for a sink drain. Now they are totally moving everything around in the store so you have a bout 10 people mostly young people putting together shelves and stocking them. What you don't have is the same friendly knowledgeable staff that want a job. I got the feeling that the young lady that helped me find what I was looking really didn't want to be there. No smile no conversation no is there anything else I can help you with and absolutely no reply to me thanking her. Yes, there is an Ace Hardware sign out front, yes the employees are wearing Ace Hardware embroidered jackets; they do not honor Ace Hardware products and returns. Per one of the employees, "We just sell Ace products. I came here to get the piece of glass cut. The width was fine, but I needed the length to be 15 inches. The man took my glass and worked on it. 5 minutes later he came back with the glass cut to the length I needed. When I asked where should I pay for this service, I was shocked when told there was no charge since it was such a small thing to do. It seems very obvious that the management or the owners do not believe in protecting their clients and customers. People walking willy-nilly without mask on. I understand it's very difficult to control customers but nobody said anything to them. I walk up to the register and the girl that is behind the counter has her mask on her chin, Mouth and nose uncovered-talking to customers, with their mask on. I will say a nice lady that looks like the manager came over and took care of me because I requested her to do so and she was wearing her mask. I just don't understand why a business would put their clientele in danger and allow their clientele to put them in danger by not trying at least to enforce the policy. read more

I used to go to Floyd's two stores all the time but I too missed the older guys who weren't there anymore. They always knew another way to get a part or fix something. I too didn't get screens repaired because the contractor I bought the sliding doors from was no longer in business. The solution was to figure out how to take them off and take them to Floyd's screen shop. We needed two re-screened but only took one in to see what kind of job they would do. We could not have been more pleased! Everyone we dealt with was friendly, helped us a lot and were very competent. Not things you find all that often anymore. We too got animal fabric on the screen doors because we have animals as do all of our nearby neighbors. Our own go in and out a lot and a few others come to visit and check the food dishes. The first door was excellent - so we took in the second door. They were a bit of a chore for us to get installed and adjusted at home but the doors work great. Thanks Floyd's for and excellent couple of jobs well done. We were served by young people who treated us very well; they deserved our respect and hopefully they will do well in whatever they pursue. You know I'd like to like this place... But I can't. The employees here will not help anyone find anything. I've been in here numerous times and when I've asked the employees for assistance finding something have gotten nothing but disgruntled attitude numerous occasions. Even copped an attitude with my poor old grey haired father who was asking for assistance with getting them to cut some table cloth fabric they have. Man.... Look if you don't want to work in a hardware store, don't. There's something else out there. The store has some pretty neat stuff. A great selections of screws, nails, bolts etc.... I should have written this a long time ago. I have had the best experiences with Floyd's. I am from L.A so I'm pretty much only used to Home Depot. But there were things that I needed that the big store didn't have, like fixing a broken window and screens. Since it was a small store and in Bakersfield I thought the employees would be a little "unconcerned", it was the exact opposite experience. They were so friendly and helpful. The employees are very rude and disrespectful. Brought our lawn mower in and didn't hear anything at all. Called after about a week and they told us they ordered a part for it. Never even gave us a quote or told us what was wrong with it. They were very rude when we tried to pick it up and then charged us the price of buying a brand new lawn mower! Avoid at all cost!! I recently brought some windows in for repairs from a sun-porch off an older home. When I got them back, what I had asked to be done was not done and the aluminum window frames dented so badly that the windows are now useless. Now I have to find someone to totally remake the windows!!! They do have a lot of things in the store and if you need assistance, do ask one of the older employees. The younger ones don't have the experience to be of much help; not even always offering to find someone who can help. If I ask them if they'll find someone to answer my questions, they will do it, but look puzzled that I would make such a request....... I LOVE the ACE Hardware in Grove Beach (Miner's). The customer service here is horrible me and my mom went in we were just looking to go get some paint brushes or a paint brush kit so we could paint our house we go to the painting I'll the kit said 14.99 so we took the one because the 11.99 one wasn't there we go to the front desk it says that it's 16.99 we told her that if she could check because it said it was 14.99the lady in the front does it but then she gets annoyed and gets rude I don't get it it's your job is not our fault that you or one of your workers didn't label it right and label it the wrong price and the managers dealing with another person next to us the managers even more rude she looks so mad and doesn't smileis not friendly doesn't say anything to us just tells her worker to put it as miss labeled your should at least Acknowledge us and then walked back and got the next costumer you could at least say sorry about the trouble or something you are the manager after all no she just tells her what to do and I think it's very rude you're a manager you should be happy and smiling and the girl was very rude and changing aware words sorry that you don't put the right pricing on your labels so in the end they have really really bad customer service wouldn't recommend you going very very rude and this the second time something like this happened at this store the workers there are just horrible the owner needs to do something about that read more

I took on the responsibility of assisting an elderly developmentally disabled lady with fixing the problems around her home. Housing Authority had marked some repairs needed for her to pass inspection. She is a home owner with no family. Her home was missing 2 screens. Me being a woman and never having bought screens, I thought you could just walk into a home improvement store and purchase screens. WRONG! Yesterday was the deadline for her to have these repairs done. When I realized that I would have to have the screens made, I realized that I needed to call the Housing Authority and hopefully they would understand. The Housing Authority Representative said that they don't typically give extensions, but given the circumstance, we can have 2 more days. I call Floyd's and asked if they could have 2 screens made for me by tomorrow. A gentleman name Donnie told me that it looks like they'd be able to have them ready, however he can't promise that they would. He stated that he would be off the next day and he's not sure if they'll be able to get them done. I totally understood and asked if he knew where I could go to get them done. Of course, he referred me to the other Floyd's here in town. I called them and they too were friendly but weren't sure either if they'd be able to get them done. I surfed the internet made a few calls and found a place I was going to consider. They suggested that if there were other windows on the home that matched the ones I needed to bring the screen(s) so they'd be an exact match. I went to the lady's home got the screens and by this time, it's pushing 5pm. I was headed the place I was going to use and they closed at 5:30pm and they were across town. I was closest to the Floyd's at 3650 Chester Ave. my husband said to pull in and give it a shot. As we made our way back to the screen department, we were greeted by 2 gentleman, Donnie and Jake. I told Donnie that I had spoke to him earlier. He looked over and Jake and said, "I was just telling Jake about you. I told him to make you a priority if you came in." I was so thankful. Around 6:30pm last night, Jake called me and said the screens were ready. WOW! Excellent, right? I didn't pick them up until noon today. The screens are great quality and the perfect fit. I have had mixed experiences here. I like the sales staff, they have a nice selection. I took in a few screens to be redone and although one was done within a week, the other took two weeks and they lost a part and had to find it. It also took several phone calls and an extra trip down there. Then, the part got put on incorrectly and the screen couldn't be put on properly. Taking it back seemed pointless.
