My knee started acting up and having been thru my wife's two knee replacements I wanted to have it checked out right away. Made an appointment with Dr Michael Miranda at FOI's facility on Lakewood in Brandon. We had met Dr Miranda at a knee replacement seminar he gave a while back. I knew he was thr Doctor I wanted to see. As it turns out it was nothing serious just a flare up. I was given some exercises and if it continued give him a call back. I have to say #1 Lakewood is a beautiful facility. Everyone was super nice and caring from check in to xray. Dr Miranda and his staff took good care of me, giving my knee a thorough exam and explaining my xrays. Interedting to see what looked like from the inside. As I said there nothing wrong and no prescriptions which is ok with me. I can't imagine seeing anyone else but Dr Miranda. I totally trust him and other doctors I have seen st FOI. I had an alarming experience at Florida Orthopaedic Institute (FOI) on June 4, 2025. I arrived for a physical therapy evaluation and was abruptly told by front office staff (Megan) that I could not be seen due to lack of authorization--yet I received no prior notice through the patient portal, call, or email. When I questioned this, Megan became combative, insisting she "tried to call" me and denying any accountability. Her demeanor was rude, dismissive, and unhelpful. My insurance provider (Health Advantage) confirmed FOI never submitted an authorization request and stated I should not have been denied care. In a 3-way call with Megan, she shifted blame to a "third-party" and again refused to assist. When I asked for a supervisor's contact info, she first refused, gave me a different name, and then reluctantly shared the correct contact after continued pressure. I've now gone nearly two weeks without care, despite a valid referral. Based on the unprofessionalism I experienced and my insurer's recommendation, I'm now seeking care elsewhere. This is the 2nd series of visits I've had with this establishment over the past few years. The first set of visits a few years ago, I had at least 6-7 appointments and never got to see the doctor once, even for the initial consultation. For the last 3-4 appointments, I said I absolutely needed to see the doctor on my next visit and was assured that would be the case...but it never happened. They sure charged me the full rate of the appointment even though I didn't see the doctor and I was needing surgery rather than just a minor issue. On my most recent visits, I did get to see the doctor, but he was not very friendly nor was his staff. The prices are high and the service is poor. The left hand does not know what the right hand is doing at this place. Doctors are at different offices on different days and it takes a long time to get appointments and get any issues resolved even if your pain level is high. I rushed to get everything I needed for my pre-surgery prep only to have the surgery center (and anesthesiologist) call me shortly before my surgery date telling me I couldn't have the surgery because some of the medicines I was taking had to be stopped 2 weeks before the procedure, which nobody ever told me about. The doctor's office refused to acknowledge any wrong doing in the matter and said that was the other doctor's responsibility to let me know (even though they work together to service the patients) or that I should have initiated a call to them even though I was told to wait for them to call with more information. The doctor's PA was very nasty on the phone call and had absolutely no interpersonal skills. I also spoke with the office manager on both occasions and she was not helpful at all. Bottom line...stay away from this place or get ready to be treated as a number and not a patient... Bottom line read more

Arrived for my appointment and like others have stated the woman in front rude. The girl in zone 2 check-in gives me a slip of paper to fill out with my my auto insurance information. On the slip it lists primary insurance then auto insurance. As a medical booking manager of 20 years I wanted to confirm the verbiage of primary insurance and that they wanted my medical as well. She states auto. I had to explain her the difference and show her on the paper what's there and with the blank look of not understanding she just says "that's fine". I give her the slip and she informs me to take a seat as she needs to email the auto to verify the information. Why was this not done a week ago when I did the pre check-in online and provided all the same information at that time instead of sitting here waiting for an email to be returned and just prolong this visit. Lack of general general insurance terminology and lack of patient's time. Can't stress enough you had 10 minute online pre check and they did no prior insurance verification. Smh read more

My eight-year-old daughter fell off the monkey bars and fractured her wrist in two places. A super rude woman in zone one with black plastic frame glasses entered her name incorrectly, which resulted in it taking almost three hours for their verification department to verify our insurance. We are self pay, because our insurance is a Medi-Share plan. All we needed was a standard form. Finally I called Florida Orthopedic Institute's verification department myself, which is the only reason we discovered that she had reversed my daughter's middle and first name. She never apologized for her error , blamed me for writing her full name on the sign in sheet. Another hour later while we were supposedly waiting for the verification department to approve us, I called back and found out that we had been approved 40 minutes prior. I put the verification lady on speakerphone because the rude lady at the front desk was adamant that she hadn't received anything. The verification lady told me to ask for a team lead... to which the rude lady replied she is the team lead. She never admitted her error and purposely kept us waiting longer, while my 8 year old sat there with a broken wrist. Fast forward three months and three appointments (soft cast, hard cast, new scans and cast removal), we show up for our 3 o'clock appointment today to find out that it was cancelled because the "doctor does not accept my insurance." Mind you, we are self-pay. This appointment was to verify that the growth plate injury didn't require surgery and they just canceled it without notifying us. They said that they emailed and called yet they do not show up in my call log or my voicemail, and I had received a confirmation of the appointment the day prior. They said they notified on the 30th. Not only were they unprofessional but very dishonest! They also lacked empathy and urgency. I would never recommend them. read more

Dr. Evan Lowey talked me into having a complete ankle replacement installed. He assured me it would fix my problem of arthritis and it may have solved my problem if he hadn't done such a terrible job. I put up with it for over a year after surgey before I got a second opion. After a cat scan and x-rays, another doctor pointed out two mistakes on the ankle replacement. 1) the ankle was installed crooked and he had to install cadaver bone in the open space and the complete new ankle was put on top of a bone that had a crack in it and when I took a step, it would spread the crack open and cause pain. After I found this information out I fired Dr. Lowey and had another Dr fix everything, Save yourself a lot of pain and STAY AWAY FROM DR. LOWEY!!!! read more

Really annoying when you go to see a doctor (Dr. Alavi) for a broken pinky and you pay $35 to have the doctor fill out leave of absence paperwork they tell you it will take up to 10 business days to have it filled out and then 12 business days later the paperwork hasn't been filled out and you are getting penalized at work because of it and there's literally no way to get into contact with anyone in his team so you're pretty much just left screaming into the void hoping that someone returned your phone call which they never will read more

Doctors and nurses are great. They should fire the entire front desk staff. They are rude, clueless, and give false information bordering on negligence. Horrible misleading people. We've gone around these inept scum and received services from FOC that the front staff couldn't find or said was months away and didn't take our insurance. They are a deterrent and diminishing the service provided by the real professionals there. Don't believe anything they tell you at the front desk. read more

short version: One little hiccup in the beginning doesn't outweigh the whole experience. There is still confusion cuz of the hospital being far from this institution. It's part of the early hiccups i had to endured. If they tell u "if its that bad? Come on down to the emergency room" they mean the hca hospital not here. I think. Like that part still confused. Gave me a run down n was taken to get my wrist fitted to a new wrist guard. Told what i needed to do, to warm up my tendons n muscles. Had my paperwork for work to. Cost 35$ buckeroos to get paperwork signed, totally ok with it. They even faxed them to work so its bueno. Checked out n now im debating lunch lol. I think my biggest heads up? Is the initial part. Be as clear as possible to staff n if they promise something? U may want it in writing. I been jumping from hospital to hospital n doctors to doctors for 2 years straight so i already know not to trust promises. Was told on hospital i would get my wrist surgery the next day. After i moved mountains to get paperwork n approvals they never call me back to tell me to go to hospital. It got on my nerves. But whatever it's in the past. So again, ask for it in writing if it matters to u. Im a end result person. N i like what they did to help me out. Yes they'll be hiccups but also u can just show up if its that bad. Don't wait for nothing, just do it. It's what we did. My hand was blue n hurt like a mofo even on pain killers. U may want to bring 1 person with u that can help u fill paperwork for u. Made an appointment here and told them I am self-pay because I was in a bad car accident on June 10, 2023. They set the appointment and when I got there they charged my card and took X-rays, when they took me back to the doctor the woman who has the absolute worst bed side manner, Veronica, asked about insurance and upon explaining I only had liability car insurance they informed me they were not going to see me and told me to go back to the ER. Dr. Grant Garlick was the doctor I was supposed to see. Insult to injury, they made sure they put me in a wheel chair when they saw my X-Ray and the extent of my injury but left me to walk out after not explaining why they refused to see me. Loewy is an Excellent Dr and orthopedic surgeon he is kind, patient, very Professional and even if you are done with the casts when Dr. Loewy says 4 weeks it's 4 weeks not a day sooner Now that is the Dr. You can trust and fell you're in good hands I had a injury he injected it and I was good walking, swimming, doing laps, backstroke's I felt amazing, until I had an incident I knew something was off I felt like when I stood up took the first steps I was ok then after a few more steps it literally felt like the crease of my foot was going to snap in half the swelling scarred me my ankle looked like the size of an orange I knew he was going to have to get in there fix it He explained the entire surgery to me the recovery time even though I did not want to do this I knew I had no choice, but I knew I was in good hands with the Dr. Who truly cared about me and my injury I would recommend Dr. Loewy to my family and friends anyone who asked me do you know a good orthopedic surgeon that does injuries to the ankle and so on He is the Dr. I would "HIGHLY RECOMMEND" He's not going to sugar coat anything he's going to tell you the Good, Bad, Ugly I am praying my cast can come off Tuesday and I can start physical therapy, but I will listen to whatever Dr. Loewy When I saw the x-rays, I was really taken aback by what he had done but when I saw the The surgical cast come off I'll be honest I was horrified. Went to this facility today for the first time for an MRI of my spine. This facility seemed brand new which was nice. I was taken in for my test on time which was a pleasant surprise. I am deducting a star because 1) I was stuck on both arms several times before they found a vein to administer the dye, and 2) the music was never turned on in my headphones for the second part of my test. The two radiologists assisting me were kind and professional. Also, I found this brand new MRI Machine to be quieter, which wasn't as stressful as others I've had tests in, in years past. read more

The physicians are only padding their billing. Saw an md for an issue... he took xrays & "referred" me to a partner. Who then in the same office (a month later) ordered the exact same xrays. Both only want in-house referrals with no actual treatment. Trying to get records, not permitted access to pt portal. Try to call: over an hour on hold. Call to ask if anyone is actually IN the medical records dept (as in maybe they're on lunch) & get dumped back into the same unanswered phone queue. I knew foi was a mistake going in (having dealt with their practice as a bedside nurse), but i tried. Miserable practice, stay away! read more

I have been to Florida Orthopedic a number of times. I had carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel surgery with Dr. Alfred Hess in 2019. I was so impressed at how well everything went. I had almost no pain after surgery! I had been suffering with numbness for more than 10 years and finally it was over. I can say they are busy so getting an appointment soon is difficult so you have to wait to see someone. Usually, I saw the PA prior to seeing the Dr, but he was very knowledgeable. I then had my other hand done with just the carpal tunnel surgery and it also went well. I am so happy with how things turned out. On other occasions I have had to visit their emergency center. Yes there have been numerous things that I've hurt. Every time I've been there (except once) they have been through and I received treatment. Sometimes I've gone to their physical therapy which helped tremendously. The one time I had a bad experience. The Dr asked me why I was in emergency and had not made an appointment (see note above about how long that takes). On a follow up visit I told the PA what he had asked and he apologized for that Dr's behavior and told me to come in if I needed them. I am giving them 5 stars because over all that's what I think their service deserves. I am grateful that they have an emergency service which doesn't take hours to see someone. read more

Left and called Bay Care Imaging and the told me this was sent. I've tried to reach his assistant or nurse of what to do with my problem. Called several times. A great team of Doctors, PAs, nurses, techs, etc. The facility does xrays right there, which makes the visit so much easier. No need to have an appointment, make another for an X-ray elsewhere, then another appointment to see results. It's a one stop shop. Additionally they have a great PT facility. Not only is the facility nice, the staff friendly and knowledgeable, but they're open 7 days a week. It really makes this facility stand out among the rest! read more

Florida Orthopedic's charges to get a copy of any MRI or Image scan. Then is takes a week or more because they use an out of state service. If you are in pain and need quick medical treatment you will be best NOT to get your image (MRI or CT Scan) from Florida Orthopedic. I was in severe back pain. Took me over a month to get an appointment even though I was already a patient. Then needed to wait over a week for a MRI, then another couple of weeks for a follow up to review the MRI. They said I needed an lumbar epidural, first appointment for a Pain Management Doctor appointment was over a month wait. Then I would have to wait weeks or more for the actual treatment. When you are in severe pain, every day matters and waiting months for treatment is horrible. Instead I made an appointment for an outside pain management doctor, appointment in 4 days, epidural treatment 5 days after that. But I needed a copy of my images for them to review. Florida Orthopedic had me fill out a written form, then told me I needed to wait over a week to receive them, then I had to pay for them. How long can a person in pain endure unnecessarily? In the future I will never get imaging at Florida Orthopedic. I recommend getting your Images (MRI and CT scans) at Tower, they have quick appointments. Also, you get a "free" copy of the images a day later and your ready to go to the doctor who can best serve you in the shortness amount of time. Who wants to remain in pain months when you can get help in a couple of weeks? Not me. I called Florida Orthopedic to express my dissatisfaction with their process and having to pay for a result. I left a message for MR J Dickson. He called back a few hours later, was very rude and condescending, repeating over and over again the same thing. When I told him that he didn't need to keep repeating himself, that I wanted to relay a complaint, he got belligerent and threatened to end the call. I told him to have someone call me that knew how to listen to a complaint. He never did. I have been going to Florida Orthopedic for over a decade, I like the doctors, but they are getting too big to properly serve people in need. So go elsewhere for your imaging needs. read more

All of the therapists have been outstanding- caring, attentive, knowledgeable and friendly; they always greet me by my names and seem genuinely concerned for my recovery. I have been going to Florida orthopedic for three years now. Out of the last year, I've had more issues with my co-pays than ever! They say they never get my co-pay, but if you don't pay before, you can't get seen!? So, how am I missing payments!? The office staff is rude and don't even try to make things better. I have to pull up my bank statements and show them processed payments?! And they hand me the financial services #!! Why?! So I have to sit on my phone and wait however long it takes them to figure out all my payments have been processed?! The doctors here are amazing and I have been so happy with them, but the office staff, phone systems, and each office not knowing the other office is doing, is so frustrating. I wish I knew a private practice I could go to. This is just too much aggravation on top of being in serious pain....come on. I've am done FOI. read more

My experience with Florida Orthopedic Institute is truly second to none. I highly recommend this practice. Dr Lyons is extremely professional, understanding, honest, patient and truly genuinely cares about his patients. He listens to your health needs and responds appropriately. In addition, Dr Lyons is compassionate, empathetic, and easy to talk to and he has a very calming presence that makes me feel at ease during my visits. My son was going there several times because of the broken arm. Wait times are 1.5+ hours, front desk staff is rude and inconsiderate. They overbook like there is no tomorrow, and then feed you the "we are orthopedic surgeons, so we can tell you to wait the whole day" story. Despite the crazy wait times, you never see an MD. We saw a DO and once we saw a resident. I am transferring my son's medical records to another provider. I will not set foot in that establishment ever again and absolutely do not recommend it to anyone who values their time. read more

I have had knee problems for years. I have spent months in physical therapy and now it has taken 3 months to get 2 appts at FOI for no answers and no help. Today I sat for over an hour and half in the waiting room only to find out the doctor I see left for the day without seeing me. This is so upsetting and it's just ridiculously rude. I watched a way overcrowded waiting room empty for nothing AND they called me to reschedule my appt to this time. When I went to the office everything went smoothly. Had a couple of questions about some forms needed to be signed by the doctor. When I called to ask just two questions I was met with a "hello" in a tone that sounded like it was an inconvenience and like she was fed up. Before answering one of the questions she let out a noticeable huff and continued to explain it in a tone that was fed up. I took my 1 year and 11 month old here when she sprained her ankle and wanted her to get checked at urgent care before a trip we were leaving for the next day. They refused to see her because she was under 2. She would've been 2 in 2 weeks by the time the follow up would've been needed so not sure why they couldn't just confirm it was a sprain and nothing more serious. read more

The staff in Zone 2 have no personality and make you feel like you're a bother to them. It's almost like the patients are an inconvenience. I've been waiting over an hour to be seen. Why make an appointment if you can't keep it? I can understand waiting 15-30 minutes but an hour? I don't have all day to sit and wait. My time is valuable. And hire people who actually are warm and inviting and don't have the personality of a dead moth. read more
