Review Highlights - Flipside Records

My first experience with Flipside was when I was 13; I had my dad drive me way out to Clawson just to shop.

This one is smack dab in the middle of a great little downtown area called Royal Oak. Cute shops, walkable, cafes, so I guess I had my hopes high the store owners would know what a prized spot they had, next to Detroit, and one of the few vinyl stores in the area. They'd make a killing with the right stock and atmosphere. Bummer. Mediocre on both fronts. Came to Yelp to see that lots of people feel the same way. They don't seem very interested in embodying the audiophile atmosphere of the classically great vinyl shops. They have the sound blaring nicely. But their stock is bare bones. Almost no used high desirability issues. Their jazz section was the most interesting. But dang, almost nothing you'd find on DisCogs for ten bucks cheaper. The store assistance was just one guy in the back who seemed unapproachable. But really once seeing the stock and prices, there wasn't much to bother him for. Maybe it just doesn't have the high patronage to support a lot of effort especially with high rents for retail spaces. I'm sure it's hard to run a business these days. And then guys like me who have never ran a vinyl store come onto Yelp and leave crappy reviews. It must kinda suck. So I'll just say this place is good. Three stars is good. But someone could invest some money and time and make this a very very popular music store. Someone with money has gotta be living in all these new condos in this town. And vinyl is selling more than in decades. UHF could have a renaissance with some TLC. Maybe I'll return later this year and will see it's a different situation in Summer. I wish them well. Support your local vinyl shops!

Helpful, but unobtrusive, staff that are not particularly snobbish and know their stuff. Always a fun Saturday/Sunday stroll through here spending more than I care to admit over the years living in the area.

Found Sound has that wonderful mix of just about everything, and their prices are actually more than reasonable. The difference here however is the crew. So many places have staff that vacillate between casual indifference to active dislike. Found Sound has a team that genuinely cares about your experience, and are actually happy to talk to you. I recently was perusing their soundtrack selection and found a copy I of an album I wanted. I noticed what I thought were scratches on one side, and asked the team member about it. He immediately confirmed they were light scratches and marked the price down accordingly. I can't imagine every place would be honest in this way. About the only negative of shopping here are the narrow pathways, but honestly it just means they've got more stuff for you to look at when you're there. I'm so glad I stopped in, you can bet I'll be back!

New, horrible people with the most toxic store culture now badly manage it, staff it, and over price it. Nose rings girl wouldn't let my friend use the bathroom, told her to walk down the block on a cold to other shops where there wasn't a bathroom available so she returned and told them she was having an acccident in her pants so the manager, Rachel, finallly let her in. Accident wouldn't have happened if she'd been let in the first time. I was shopping the whole time and unaware all this happened. After 20 minutes in the store, I started looking for my friend and asked sales staff if they had seen her. It was a cold windy day when nose rings girl told my friend to walk down the block. Orangey haired sales person and Rachel then double teamed me. One of them said, "This is why we don't let people use the bathroom. They always leave a puddle on the floor. It's mot my job to clean up their messes. CLEAN UP HER MESS!" I tried to explain that she wasn't my relative. They knew nothing about me and my relationship to my friend. I tried to explain but they kept ORDERING ME to clean up her mess. They said they were picking out used slacks for her so I went out to the pants rack to pick out a pair and told them so. There waa one if them picking out a pair so long my friend who is tiny woukd have tripped and falken them. I said, "These pants are too long, let me pick a pair" but she bizarrely replied, "We don't hem pants " I replied, "Hemming? This is a used clothing store and so I wouldn't assume you do tailoring!" She wouldn't let me pick out pants so I said, "I will pay for them." She still wouldn't let me pick them out and would not acquiesce to my request. So we both arrive in the bathroom area where the other one was loudly saying to my friend, who didn't need pants, "Your friend isn't happy with me" repeatedly, bad mouthing me to her. I interjected, "How dare you speak for me!" but this didn't stop her monologue about me. Nor was I going to clean up their bathroom. Unbelievable. If this was their "protocol" how many other people had they bullied and treated in a nasty, dehumanizing way? I had enough and said to my friend; "Let's go! I have been a customer for over 30 years and I'm never coming back." Punchline: my friend had been wearing Depends and didn't mess up their bathroom. Also my friend and I are Jewish and it felt like employees committed an antisemitic hate crime against me.
