Ian and I decided to do a last minute holiday and Ian had been searching the net on the Thomas Cook…read morewebsite and he suggested Lanzarote again, which I happily agree with. We wanted to see if it would be cheaper or not to book online or through the travel agent. We'd already booked through the agent two years previously and were absolutely delighted with our holiday hence us going back. Ian had noted all costs to compare with what the agent would calculate. It pretty much matched and they gave us a small discount as we choose to come in. Bonus! The holiday did unfortunately cost us a bit more than we hoped and this mostly due to flying from Manchester as there was no flights from Glasgow, which we already knew from checking the website. The staff are always friendly with great banter. There's just something about booking a holiday with someone who knows what they're doing. Yes it maybe works out cheaper sometimes doing it yourself online but when you're forking out a bit of money I like to make sure I'm doing it right. You also get a small discount on exchanging your money too. It feels you can get it all sorted all under one roof and feel it's all in hand so you can concentrate on the big pack. It was again a fantastic holiday and would use Thomas Cook again.

Not having ever used this sort of service before, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was kinda hoping to get a little bit more help than I actually did. When I walked in, there was a massive queue for travel money and a handful of service associates either helping people, answering phone calls, or waiting for people to come in with questions, like moi. I was flagged down and asked to come over to discuss travel plans with her. Having already researched a ton of stuff at home with the boyfriend, I thought Thomas Cook had some special portal where they got all their special travel deals from. My boyfriend and his mates went away earlier this year and were able to get some crackin' deals from Thomas Cook. I wouldn't have such luck. The service associate proceeded to open up google and basically do the same search for flights that I did. After realising she wasn't going to be able to get me a good deal because apparently there are no direct flights where I want to go, she proceeded in trying to get me to change my destination all together and then suggested a coach trip which would be two times the length of the current trip we want to take. Even though I specifically told her I was just shopping around for deals and would be taking any information gathered home to chat it over with the boyfriend, she was really interested in me booking something right then and there. Nah. Anyway, I told her thanks anyway, but none of the info she gave me was anything more than what I was finding in the comfort of my own home on my own PC. She was polite enough and said to go home, speak to the boyfriend and come back and see her when we decided what to do. OK, sure.

Well, the guy behind the desk was amazing! Wow. Quick and painless, I can tell you that, so I booked there and then. No fuss, no panic, no annoying questions (or popups). Thank you STA - I might even send you a postcard.

No, I use them for travel insurance as it is has the cheapest rates going! Their 99p a day option covers the majority of your possessions (except sunglasses - do we lose them more than other things?) and the service is always brilliant. I have however nipped in to use their holiday planning brochures which are brilliant if your looking for a holiday in a quite little places yet to be touched by masses of tourists! I'm planning a holiday to NYC this summer and the rates here are second to none if you hold a matric card. New York for 279 quid! A serious bargain as a cheap flight outwith student travel is aroud 330. And with San Fran being only 369 its also worth a visit to the west coast of the north american continent! Round the world flights are also offered from 689 pounds with a flight from every major continient and a select flight within each one as well! Definitely the place to stop by if you're planning a trip with your pals or heading solo. You won't find cheaper!

We waited 1.5 hours to get checked in, others waited longer. When we eventually got to our room it was disgusting; filthy windows; stained and un-hoovered carpets; dirty sink/bath; no hook to hang wet towels, curtain coming off the rail and very poor decor. The view from the room was of the reception roof which had empty cans, used vapes and other litter strewn around. Slept on top of the bed due to the uncleanliness of the room. The lounge/bar area was unpleasant and poorly furnished. We were informed the bar closed at 11pm despite it being a Friday during the Edinburgh Festival. The dining room was dull and set out like a canteen. Meals were self- service so food trays had to be carried from the lounge to dining area causing some difficulty for people with mobility difficulties. The choice of food was very basic and unappetising. Desserts were also left on a counter, uncovered for 2 hours, before meal time. We ate out in Edinburgh including breakfast the following day, which was an added expense but at least it was fresh and appetising. Caledonia Travel must have been aware of the poor online reviews for the Brittania Hotel yet continued to use it for overnight trips to the Edinburgh Tattoo. Coaches cannot park directly outside the Brittania Hotel! We witnessed people struggling to climb the hill to the coach due to mobility issues and breathing difficulties. It's a disgrace. I've done trips with Caledonia Travel before but will NEVER use them or recommend them again.

That is sadly gone now, although the shop has never quite shaken off the old fashioned, slightly yellowing appeal. Experts in package holidays, and longer flights, this is not a bucket shop- despite its proximity to the University, and offers a fairly broad range of deals: the staff don't have the same enthusiasm as the more informal shops, but are linked to major holiday companies. It's very lived in and homely (in the I'm too busy to clean my windows kind of way). I've never noticed it being particularly busy, or busy at all really, but it must keep business ticking over considering how long it's been here. This is not surprising given that the staff are very friendly, helpful and genuinely know their stuff. None of this - yes, one moment..I think it's close to...oh wait no - while they click away on computers or frantically flick through brochures. Instead of acquiring the same information you could have from reading their brochures you feel that the staff genuinely know what they are talking about. Always a major plus, in today's travel agent world. Plus, don't fall into the student 'honey trap', they cater for all folks and have good up-to-date knowledge about longer holidays, further afield places and long haul flights. They are also affiliated with bigger companies so can offer a range of good deals which won't break the bank. Perfect. If only they still had the cardboard cutout men in the window...

There were so many decisions to be made on issues I was clueless about. Like whether or not to start my trip in China or Japan or which is best; travelling by bus or train round the USA. Thankfully I was served by a man in this branch of STA who knew exactly what he was talking about and so much more.
