Sometime in 2009, I made my inaugural visit to Phillipa's in Armadale and since then, it's become…read moreone of my best loved places. Opened in 1994 apparently, this awesome little bakery is more than just that as it also stocks a select range of bread, cheese, eggs, biscuits and olives. With a seasonal menu in play, there's always something new to try and my current rave items include the Rustic pizza with Napoli with pancetta, fontina, roasted Spanish onions, baked button mushrooms with taleggio. I also love the egg and dukka with fresh spinach leaves on a seeded grain sourdough, which is lovely and wholesome and will leave you satisfied for hours. But besides the excellent menu, clearly it is the large range of bread, pastries and cakes that have made it famous, with people coming from far and wide for their fill. My all time favourites include the Victoria sponge cake and the lemon tarts. In the bread department - must tries include the pane toscano and the honey and oat whole-wheat tin.

This is the second time I've popped into Phillipa's. I live in the area but, being a bakery, it…read moreisn't my first choice for a place to eat. I was only after a coffee - which my colleague and I jinxed describing as "ok but not amazing" - but I could easily have been swayed by the desserts and pastries on display had it not been 11am. On both occasions I've visited, staff were not overly friendly. Not to say they are rude, but they were very job-oriented and rarely smiled. The barista who handed me my coffee was quite nice, making sure I understood that the cups were thin and doubled, and the coffee was hot. I wouldn't return for the coffee or customer service, but I would come back for a snack.

I love the variety, selection and quality of food at Aviv. There's a good mix of savoury and sweet…read moreitems, and you can always find something to buy to satisfy a craving or to organise a work lunch/party or whatever. Their bagels aren't my favourite, but they have great quiches, and often at work we get their cakes for various occasions and they never disappoint. However ... with all of that said, the only real negative I can say is that they are a tad overpriced and to me, it lets them down. I also happened to buy a birthday cake, a mini quiche and a cookie and I had some sticker shock for sure. When the cookie was rung up and it said $5, I thought that was the mini quiche and cookie added up together. So that day I spent $51 and when I was leaving, I asked if there was a bag to put the cake in. The only bags were the cloth ones, and they were going to charge me .50c for one when I just spent $51. I had to do a whole separate transaction on EFT-POS just to pay for this .50c bag. I feel that not only are they a bit overpriced, but they need to use common sense when charging for a bag after someone has spent a certain amount. It's a bit off putting, however I'm sure the lure of their bubka (the best I've ever eaten anywhere) will get me back there eventually down the road ...

Until I book that flight I have found Melbourne's contender in the challenge and it is located inside what some say is also one of the best places to buy bagels in town, Aviv's. If you are planning to have people over for brunch I highly recommend pre ordering some mini bagels. Your guests will be as happy as I am when I go to someone's house for brunch and I see those little circles of holy dough.

I consider my lunch here as the first comfort meal I've experienced since moving to Melbourne for a…read moreyear. My French-Portuguese roommate, Davide, found employment here and once I learned they have a steak sandwich I told him I'd come by. Glad I did. The steak sandwich is an off menu offering but likely is a regular staple. Not your usual steak sandwich on French bread or a baguette but toasted white. So rich in flavour and ingredients. Simple, but big in bite. The potatoes were buttery and when Thomas, the owner, came to introduce himself I asked about the butter and he said, "butter, of course!" I'm pretty sure there was a not so overpowering, but rich, horseradish that was a nice compliment. Aside from the lunch I ordered some desserts to take home. An Anzac biscuit, banana bread, chocolate and mini mallow. All worth the try. The shop is small and that's appealing. Clean, inviting, and friendly staff. They knew about my visit and we chatted and it was a pleasure. I hope this review reaches some and creates foot traffic. I'm definitely returning during my time. Only drawback for me was having no Coke, just Coke Zero.

Going straight back to the word "genuine" in the first sentence. Not on trend - but excellent in the best way - the simple way. My family loves to come here.
