Excuse me while I have a bite of lamington to wash down my mouthful of disappointment…read more According to the Danish Australian Cultural Society, this unassuming suburban bakery in Bentleigh is supposed to be THE place to get authentic Danish bread in Melbourne. Well! Not only did they not have Danish bread, they didn't have any bread. At all. I was not a happy camper. In their defense, it was later on in the afternoon, so maybe all the bread had sold out. But it was not, despite the framed 1980's posters displaying Denmark's beauty, a Danish bakery. I was lied to by the internet! I'm guessing the Cultural Society has had it on their list for some time, but failed to notice that it's changed hands and is now just a run-of-the-mill Australian bakery. There's nothing wrong with standard suburban bakeries - in fact, I'm generally a fan - but my boyfriend has been talking up the wonders of Danish bread for weeks now, so we made a special trip out to Bentleigh, hangovers and all, only to be disappointed. I'm just glad Bentleigh has such a wealth of junk stores and op shops so the trip wasn't a complete waste of time.

I've only been into this cafe twice and only ended up leaving with coffee. Their speciality seems…read moreto be cream cakes. I'm sure they taste delicious but I'm not really a fan of cream cakes. Because I don't really eat cream I notice the strong cream (sugar?) smell as soon as I walked in. What I can tell you with certainty is that the coffee tastes great and was handed to me speedily. That was once I poured it into a regular cup out of the takeaway cup which I wasn't thrilled with and was filled to full. Upshot, great coffee, friendly staff maybe better to leave the cakes and eating in to your elderly Aunty who might be more partial to lacy type decor. Read Not hipster.

I love the variety, selection and quality of food at Aviv. Their bagels aren't my favourite, but they have great quiches, and often at work we get their cakes for various occasions and they never disappoint. However ... with all of that said, the only real negative I can say is that they are a tad overpriced and to me, it lets them down. I also happened to buy a birthday cake, a mini quiche and a cookie and I had some sticker shock for sure. When the cookie was rung up and it said $5, I thought that was the mini quiche and cookie added up together. So that day I spent $51 and when I was leaving, I asked if there was a bag to put the cake in. The only bags were the cloth ones, and they were going to charge me .50c for one when I just spent $51. I had to do a whole separate transaction on EFT-POS just to pay for this .50c bag. I feel that not only are they a bit overpriced, but they need to use common sense when charging for a bag after someone has spent a certain amount. It's a bit off putting, however I'm sure the lure of their bubka (the best I've ever eaten anywhere) will get me back there eventually down the road ...

Until I book that flight I have found Melbourne's contender in the challenge and it is located inside what some say is also one of the best places to buy bagels in town, Aviv's. If you are planning to have people over for brunch I highly recommend pre ordering some mini bagels. Your guests will be as happy as I am when I go to someone's house for brunch and I see those little circles of holy dough.
