Well! Not only did they not have Danish bread, they didn't have any bread. At all. I was not a happy camper. In their defense, it was later on in the afternoon, so maybe all the bread had sold out. But it was not, despite the framed 1980's posters displaying Denmark's beauty, a Danish bakery. I was lied to by the internet! I'm guessing the Cultural Society has had it on their list for some time, but failed to notice that it's changed hands and is now just a run-of-the-mill Australian bakery. There's nothing wrong with standard suburban bakeries - in fact, I'm generally a fan - but my boyfriend has been talking up the wonders of Danish bread for weeks now, so we made a special trip out to Bentleigh, hangovers and all, only to be disappointed. I'm just glad Bentleigh has such a wealth of junk stores and op shops so the trip wasn't a complete waste of time.

That was once I poured it into a regular cup out of the takeaway cup which I wasn't thrilled with and was filled to full. So that day I spent $51 and when I was leaving, I asked if there was a bag to put the cake in. The only bags were the cloth ones, and they were going to charge me .50c for one when I just spent $51. I had to do a whole separate transaction on EFT-POS just to pay for this .50c bag. I feel that not only are they a bit overpriced, but they need to use common sense when charging for a bag after someone has spent a certain amount. It's a bit off putting, however I'm sure the lure of their bubka (the best I've ever eaten anywhere) will get me back there eventually down the road ...

If my cholesterol-levels would allow it, I'd have the chopped liver every time :) Our kids love their meat pies with tomatoey minced beef and tasty chicken sausage rolls. And the kids schnitzel and chips is a steal for a huge serve at just AU$8. There are cute cookies for kids, and seriously yummy biscuits for adults. I've also heard very positive things about the hot meat pies. Their style is continental and they really do have a traditional honesty goodness. You can taste it. The three little bakers (and Bert) offer sweet baked goods, slices, hot pies and pasties, fresh baked bread plus a fresh sandwich bar. Oh and good coffee. The only small issue at the moment is lack of parking. Hopefully this won't be a problem for too long. Either way it's worth a visit!

However the kranskys in pastry and meat pies are indescribably delicious, particularly the curry and the bacon pies. If I were marooned on a desert island and could only eat one thing for the rest of my days, it would be their meat pies. They have a nice courtyard area, with plenty of shade under trees and umbrellas, which is the best place to sit and enjoy their terrific coffee. Best of all, for me at least, is this place is just a three minute walk from my front door...and I'm getting up and walking there as soon as I post this review.
