Living in L.A, it was an absolute pleasure to come home to Melbourne and indulge in one of Melbourne's best food treats.. real bread!! All the breads are baked on location and are absolutely delicious fresh or toasted the next day. There is a list of ingredients above on chalkboard so you know exactly what is in the breads. The prices are not listed which would be very handy but the loaves seem to be around $6 or $7 each. Pricey yes but you get what you pay for. Especially considering a loaf of mass produced bread in the supermarket can be almost the same price. The girls serving are lovely and friendly. Parking is easy right on the street out front. My son calls this place, "Down the hill" as we are up the top of the hill on Barkly St. For his birthday he picked this bakery to go to for his breakfast pastries. I didn't realise how new this place was, but I have to admit, even if the pickings were sparse, they were delicious. We decided upon some croissants (both plain and chocolate) and a muffin, along with a few hot chocolates and coffees. The guys that are working like crazy behind the counter are friendly and you can tell they are well invested in the place. If you are on in the area, stop by here and taste the goods, you won't be disappointed. read more

The most snug & inviting little bakery around. It's always pretty busy, but Woodfrog is a fantastic St.Kilda option for excellent coffee, picking up some bread or grabbing a tasty treat or meal. The chicken ficelle is my go-to lunch option close to work, and I usually can't help but pair it with a coffee (axil coffee roasters) and one of their little doughnuts or cakes. Carb heaven! These guys were runners up for best hot cross bun in town this year, so be sure to drop by in Easter next year. I'll just be here at my desk mourning to end of hot cross bun season in the meantime. There's limited seating but friendly and fast service, and a few nice spots outside to hang out with your dog. I think this place will only get better in winter with the pies and soups on offer! read more

A cute and quaint bakery and cafe on Barkly Street, Woodfrog Bakery was perfect for a speedy meeting over coffee. It is a tiny little venue, probably only seating around 20 (if that!) but the set-up is great. The majority of the space is actually taken up by the bakery, which you can see through to through a massive window that takes up half the space! While I only grabbed a coffee, my eyes feasted on the incredible baked treats for sale on the counter. Almond croissants, danishes, you name it -they've got it. Not sure if I would head here for a full meal, but for a quick coffee and muffin on the run, Woodfrog Bakery has got you covered. read more

Rising to the occasion - Woodfrog Bakery, St Kilda There's a new bakery in St Kilda, and we reckon it can challenge Baker D. Chirico for the sourdough crown. There will be blood. The actual bakery offerings are sparse at the moment but as Jarrod, the baker, said on our first visit - baby steps are the most important. So they are focusing on getting the sourdough just right before tackling the pastries - but don't worry, they are coming. And in the meantime, the loaves and bagels will keep you happy, we promise. You will find the bakery hidden near the corner of Barkley Street and Inkerman Street - just before it turns into Grey Street. Keep your eyes peeled for the bakery sign hammered into the tree out front and the very Melbourne walled garden situated right next to the bench, which will come into its own in summer. It arrives in good company - with Inker7, Miss Jackson, Graze on Grey (reviewed here) and Fitzrovia (reviewed here) all found in the same neighbourhood. You know whatever baked goods they have decided to focus on are top-shelf, as Jarrod was a previous incumbent of Baker D. Chirico and South Melbourne's Chimmey's, to name a few. I cannot wait to have a decent sausage roll or gourmet pie that can be found within walking distance from my front door. In fact just this week they had just rolled out their first pies which at the moment cost more to produce than what they charge customers. A little more R&D needed to get the balance right. The boys are keen as mustard to show off their new studio so don't be afraid to ask to see where the magic happens. They also have plans for baking classes, which will be a little more adult than the sessions happening at Brasserie Bread in South Melbourne (who specialise in kid's baking, not that there is anything wrong with that) as alcohol will be allowed to flow (to a certain extent). Yay! The classes will take place over two evenings, to allow the dough to rise. I for one am visiting Danny Berkovitch and Jarrod Hack every Saturday and Sunday to pick up a warm loaf for breakfast and another to last me the week. They have just received the delivery of their coffee machine - so it's all coming together for them. And at $3 a coffee - name a place anywhere that can rival that. Once the sun decides to come back you will find me perched out front, attempting to eat my way through their assortment of baked goods. You should start thinking the same. read more

Located on my grocery route along Barkly Street between my apartment near Albert Park and the grocery stores of Acland street and Balaclava, I always stop by Woodfrog for a loaf of bread as it is (obviously!) far superior to anything the grocery store has to offer. They do a mean sourdough here, as previous reviewers have attested. The soir (dark) loaf is delicious as well, as are their challah rolls. The baguettes look wonderful as well, though I haven't actually gotten around to eating one. Service is pleasant and extremely friendly and I find their hours to be more conducive to an after-work bread run than at Baker D. Chirico, as they are open a bit later during the week (and are also open on Sunday). My only reservation is that their bagels don't seem to be actual bagels, but rather bread baked in the shape of a bagel. It's still quite good, but it doesn't have the chewiness and density of a real boiled bagel. Overall, an excellent addition to the already bakery-rich streets of St Kilda. read more

Almost hidden and unassuming shop frontage: Just as you give up looking for it, Wood frog becomes apparent. Wood frog would sit proudly in any adventure fable as the setting for the protagonist's home. It has that "House hidden in the secret woods" look about it. The majority of the space is taken up by a considerable sized bakery, so rest assured qaulity is going to be good. Despite it's small seating capacity, Wood frog is still very popular and busy. Get place for a quick pit stop coffee, or if you plan it well enough, I'm guessing very fantastic breads. The real old fashioned actual real bread artisan kind. Aka none of this tip top gunk. A good addition to any neighborhood. Local independent bakery. read more

I've had a few sandwiches here and each time they've been delish! Fresh baked bread with fresh ingredients. Try the roast beef, beetroot and horseradish sandwich, very tasty! Also the smoked salmon bagel isn't too shabby! Sandwiches will cost you over $10 but they're worth it. read more

Really lovely little spot that has become one of our go-tos. The atmosphere is great, cozy with always friendly staff and happy customers (bonus: there's nearly always dogs out front enjoying the outdoor seating with their families.) Coffee is consistently perfectly done, particularly the mochas where you can really taste the high quality of ingredients. All the baked goods, breads and dips we've tried have been top-notch as well: almond croissant and walnut baguette are two of our favorites. My only wish was the baked goods were just a teeny, tiny bit less expensive. I understand the price is for the quality and service. 100% get that. I just can't swing $8 on a loaf of bread every week, and more than $5 for a scone is a bit of a stretch. I still love the place, just can't afford to go as often as I wish I could. read more

Oh my goodness.. what a HUGE mistake choosing lunch here was ! I had the single most unpleasant experience today at this cafe. Potential cafe patrons beware. Oh where do I start? I used to train Cafe Front of house staff and barista's so I have a good degree of ability to gauge what should be happening at a so called rated cafe.. The woman who served us; Brown shortish hair, pale, short and full figured. Thanks for the eye rolls and very audible sighing when my wife and daughter took their time deciding. Incredibly you asked no less than two other people behind us if they wanted help instead of finishing our order! Amazingly rude and when I asked what bread was left for the 'toast' option you said 'its over there, make it yourself' in the most monotone bored way possible. Oh the bread? well, had it not been the loaf ends and dry I am sure it once was a palatable slice but not when we got our rather dry small pieces (x2 for $6) with an overwhelming choice of old peanut butter (in a slimy container) vegemite and very average blueberry jam. The Tuna roll was also in a dry roll with dry and semi tasteless tuna salad, a couple of dry slices of tired tomato and micro slim slices of red onion and stale egg slices (gag). Our coffee you ask? , when it finally arrived (after others being served AFTER us had got their coffee???) was incorrectly made. Overheated milk in an over extracted bitter short (whoops yes, I did mention that I did TRAIN barista's) I had ordered a large latte in a take out cup because at that stage planned on leaving asap and we got a small glass instead., As he left it there I mentioned that we had ordered something else, he (early 20's, bearded) mumbled ' that's what i got told' and then beat a hasty retreat. ANY cafe person worth their salary/rate would have asked if we wanted what we had ordered (and paid for) and rectified the problem btw. So, in short, this was an appalling experience for us in regards to service and the mediocre (at best) food and did not help.. The service was possibly the worst I have seen in Australasia. I have lived in Sweden, USA, New Zealand, Central America and Australia and have never ever been made to feel so unwelcome and uncomfortable. The fact that the rude woman serving us came up to our table later to noisily dump cutlery in our basket while we were trying to chat to say oooh look its 'batman and robin' at some drunk party goers outside was a strange act of insincere connection, no consideration at all. We will never return to this psuedo cafe and will be telling everyone we know that in this incredible city where hospitality has been nothing short of amazing....Melbourne is well known for its incredible friendly dynamic in regard to hospitality. You have given me the single worst experience. Attention owner/manager, you need to re train (or re hire) your staff. negative 5 out of nothing is a fair rating. read more
