I needed new shoes. Just so happens that packet pick up for the 2019 Gobbler Grind half marathon was held at this Gary Gribble running store in Overland Park, KS as well. I like it. I was told that Gary Gribble Running Store is one of the better specialty running stores in the greater Kansas City area. And so, it was nice to do a 2 for one stop shop here and picked up a pair of new running shoes to kick off the new year of racing and running. Gary Gribble Running store seemed to be like any other running store from the outset, but the knowledge of the staff here of running and shoe mechanics can help you get into your best shoes and give you that confidence to start yourself on a healthy path to fitness or racing. Most of their inventory are running shoes, but they sell other running related items, such as clothing, running accessories, and items that are need during a running event- like GU and body glide, among other items. Gary Gribble Running Sports can be your next stop for running shoes, if you're in the Overland Park, Kansas area. For myself though, I actually stumbled upon a sale and got those aforementioned shoes at a 20% discount, which was amazing!! I had a 10% discount coupon for the yelp check in but couldn't combine it with my existing purchase. Oh well. Next time, I guess. The store itself was arranged neatly and you could find what you're looking for. I did enjoy the knowledgeable staff about shoes that I forgot about. They explained to me about running situations and issues that I've known for a while, but it's nice to get a refresher once in a while. They're the bestest! Not sure if Kansas City's public transportation comes through this area or not, but best bet would be to have your own rental car or have uber / lyft app on your phone for quick and easy access for on demand rides. For the most part though, I was satisfied with my purchase and got a 20% discount too. It was around the price range I was looking for - after the discount. If you are looking to start a fitness program for your health, starting that couch to 5km program, or even half marathon or marathon training, consider coming to the Gary Gribble running sports here in Overland Park to discuss your running goals and they can get you into that comfortable training shoes to get you started on the path to a healthy and inspirational success. Gary Gribble's Running Sports is the ONLY place that I would ever go to purchase running shoes. They have two locations in Kansas City; I always find myself at the Ward Parkway Mall location when I need new running shoes and/or socks! They have an excellent selection of different types of running shoes for different types of feet. No matter how much you run or walk or how well you run or walk the knowledgeable staff here will work with you to get you into the perfect shoe for your type of feet and your style of running/walking. They even have a small track inside the store for you to run/walk around to simulate your new running shoe experience! I am by no means a great runner but I do try and this seems to cause a good amount of wear and tear on my socks and shoes. Seeing that it is 2017, I wanted to make some resolutions and an increase in running was one of them. The people that work at Gary Gribble's were great at finding a perfect shoe for my needs, running type, and foot type; they even watch your walking/running gait to make sure that they get you in a perfect shoe! The prices are not cheap but when it comes to running shoes that is not something I would want to skimp my money on; you need to take care of your feet if you are going to be running and Gary Gribble's sets the gold standard for doing so. I am NOT a natural runner, but I did cross country for years (how I managed to survive, I still do not know.) Every season, from August through October, I ran at least 4 miles a day in a pair of custom-fit shoes from Garry Gribble's - and it's thanks to them that my body was protected from the strains of such exertion. In the average sporting shoe store: Footlocker or Dick's, etc, although their staff may be helpful and nice, they cannot compare to the quality attention and expertise of the GG running staff. My cross country coach worked here and she had been a runner all of her life, had broken records in the state, had taken girls to state and beyond in running - she KNEW a good shoe because it was her life. People like my coach work at GG and fit the customers with their best shoe possible. At first, I didn't understand the big deal: a shoes a shoe. But no. With the wrong shoe, as a runner, you can tear up your legs so bad you'll never run again, you can damage your muscles, your bones, your tendons, your arch! The arch of your foot, if not supported perfectly, can flatten and cause back injuries, etc. Buying the right shoe is all about protecting your body from the strain you put it through and most athletes should appreciate this. If you are a runner, in Kansas City, no question come here. Every few months you should be fitted with a new running shoe because they run down and lose the initial support you'll need as a daily runner. I went to Gary Gribble to pick up my race packet and I came out with my race packet and a new pair of running shoes that I wasn't planning on purchasing. They had an adorable doggy greeter and staff that were all smiles with running knowledge. If you need running advice, apparel, running fuel( energy food and drink powder), and okay prices but they do have items that are on sale and gently used shoes. I would definitely recommend coming here but as a runner and cautious about how much I spend you should shop around until you're comfortable with what you buy. read more

The first time I went here, I was provided excellent customer service and had someone listen to everything I told them about how I wanted to started running and didn't know how to begin. Flash forward 10 years, I have bought every pair of shoes from them. They're local, involved in the community, fairly priced, and will let you try the shoes on and move around the mall to get a better feel for them. This is really how every business should be run, and aside from Yelp, you've probably heard good things about them one way or another. If I could give 0 stars, I would. I had a terrible experience with returning shoes here. I was not informed of their policy of "not being allowed to wear the shoes outside" and I was denied the return. Apparently they changed the policy AFTER I bought the shoes, but since I was returning them after the policy changed they would not respect the old policy and refused my return. No idea how I am supposed to see if shoes work for me by wearing them inside my carpeted apartment for a couple hours, versus real life walking on concrete floors of a hospital all day. I spent almost $200 on shoes that I can't wear due to a foot condition, and now I am tasked with trying to sell them online and not getting the amount I paid for them. Just moved from San Diego, where Road Runner Sports (a mail order giant, with great outlet sales) was the reigning running shoe store. I have been running for over 30 years, and knew nothing of Gary Gribbles--took my wife there for shoes (she has serious plantar faciatis and wears orthotics) and she was carefully examined and fitted with shoes that have been her most comfortable. The sales person took a great deal of time to make sure of my wife's gait and knew the shoes that would work best. They also have occasional sales of seasonal merchandise at significant discounts--I've grabbed several pairs of running tights (not a big item in San Diego, but mandatory here!), shoes, and other accessories that were great deals. Great service, great prices, and a couple of locations. Really great to have such a great running shoe store in the KC (and Lawrence) area. read more

Gary Gribbles is a walk in mall outlet, the majority of the store is running clothing, along the right side and in the middle. The left side of the store is adorned with a wide variety of generic and specialty running shoes for men and women. There are several racks in the store that have running accessories and supplements, like water bottles, power bars, watches etc... There is also a rack that has running publications and local running event and club information. The staff there is all runners and most them work there as a second job just because they love running and was to share their passion and help other runners. There has been some significant remodeling of the Ward Parkway location during the past few months and although it was still in progress on my visit last week I was impressed at the changes I saw.....especially the addition of a fancy treadmill! It wasn't "up and running" yet, so to speak, but they are joining the human race by offering gait analysis, which is something I really hoped they would do. They also have a machine now that reads the pressure on your feet in order to help you select the best kinds of inserts. These new developments, in addition to the fact that they offer a 20% discount on many of their items for KC Track Club members, makes them as good as anywhere else and I wish they were closer to home! The store can get very busy on the weekends so if you are hoping to spend some time with a member of staff to get shoe selection tips then I'd suggest trying to come here earlier in the day during the week. Sometimes you're fat, and don't want to be fat anymore. You'd like to start running, but don't even know where to begin. And if you're anything like me, you start by buying new shoes! So that's somewhat in jest, but in all seriousness, I think Garry Gribble's is a great place for novices who are serious about getting into fitness to begin. The staff is knowledgeable, most seem to be runners themselves, and they have a quality spread of shoes to choose from. For myself, the sales associate brought me a ton of options and helped me pick a reasonably priced pair of running shoes that compliment the quirks of my particular feet (super strong arches and so forth) My only disappointment is that I had heard a ton of stories about the depth of diagnostic work that would go into your first visit to Garry Gribble's, and it ended up just being folklore. I never ran on a treadmill while they observed. I didn't stand on some special mat that measures how you distribute your weight. Instead, I just walked around the store while the dude checked out my gait. Regardless of my slight disappointment that it wasn't as high-tech experience as I had been led to believe, I was happy to have somebody helping me pick out quality shoes. If you're in any way a serious runner in KC, you've been to Gribble's, for good reason. They go the extra mile to make sure you've got a shoe you are happy with. Bring in your old shoe and they'll examine the wear patterns to make sure you've got the right setup. They'll give you plenty of options and be patient with you while you mull them over. If you want, they'll get into the wonky details of the compounds in the sole or the relative lift of the toe and the heel. They all run, they know about running, and they want to help you love it too. I'm on my fourth pair of shoes from here and I keep going back. They've recently moved to a bigger space in the mall, and their selection of clothing and accessories has expanded. I'm focused mostly on shoes and small accessories, so I can't speak to the rest. Why not 5 stars? Their return policy, while perfectly reasonable, is a little more strict than stores I've visited in other cities. They plaster every box with the details: 30 days to return, store credit only, and no shoes worn outside. I've suffered running on the treadmill on beautiful days to make sure I was happy with my shoes. To be fair, they did swap them out for me when I didn't like them, but I'd wish for a little more latitude. I've also seen shops that have treadmills and do some stride analysis. Now I'm really reaching, but those kinds of service would push what is a fantastic shop into the perfect range. read more

We first shopped here for my husband who hates shopping and has trouble finding properly fit shoes. His job requires him to be on his feet all day and he has had previous foot surgery so comfort is a priority. They aren't pushy but they let you know they are there to help. They measured his foot and observed his gait. They examined his old shoes wear to see how he distributed his weight. He tried on many pairs of shoes that day. Finally, he found the perfect pair. They logged his info in the computer and we left happy. Today we went back and mentioned we had been there before and wanted something like he had chosen before. They pulled up his info and they brought us the newest version of that shoe. Super! That shoe fit just as well as the first pair did. Husband wanted one more pair of shoes (non work, just casual) and the attendant was able to recommend a shoe based on his preferences. That one worked out too and it was on clearance. Blown Away. That pretty much sums up my feelings about today's trip to Garry Gribble's Running Sports. I have always had an on again off again relationship with running. I have always preferred the low impact running that is offered on a treadmill but I also love the exploration of running in the city-just hate the impact it has on my feet and knees. Read: I am old as balls...or at least my knobby knees act like they are ancient. Recently my hatred of all things pavement running came to a head and I found myself with at least one (I'm swearing two but don't have the xrays to prove it) stress fractures in my left foot. I know that poor shoes, the extra force that I exerted by running while pushing a friend's wheelchair in a 5k, and the impact of running a trail that went through parking lots, all worked hand in hand to break my foot. All of these things could have been avoided but they happened and such is life. Now, 3 lbs heavier, a sweet new high-fashion velcro boot on said injured foot, and 0 miles run in the past 6 weeks, I'm SO READY TO BE RUNNING AGAIN! First things first, in an effort not to lose my mind from the boredom of only doing stationary exercises, I decided to go start learning from these experts to see if they could help me find the right gear to ever keep this from happening again. Two ladies worked together with me, studied my foot where it was injured , studied my gait, and measured both feet to find the proper size. They were really scared of hurting me even after I assured them that they weren't in the slightest. I told them up front that I wasn't ready to buy because staring at beautiful bright blue and orange shoes in my closet would drive me nuts but I wanted to learn what to buy and how much to save to get the right shoes. No more Clearance shoes! One of the ladies walked me through how even though running shoes that are last year's models can be good shoes at first, immediately after they leave warehouse, their foam starts to break down. Even though my shoes had only been a year old, they were probably two given that they were on clearance and the last pair when I found them. These two ladies were so knowledgeable and shared with me their own running related injury stories and were so encouraging. One girl had Tibia stress fractures only a year ago and has run a marathon since. Incredible. I left here feeling so inspired, educated, and encouraged. I had them write down their names and which shoe we picked out so that I can go in next month for me to buy my shoes. I am not a runner. I try, but even when I get good and can do a 5k on the treadmill, I will never be an outdoor runner. I have allergies and I get bored without a TV in front of me. That said, this place is helpful and awesome. They measure your feet, look at how you walk, and they don't bring out the most expensive shoe, they bring out 4 pairs from different brands that are all right for the specific needs of your stride. Also, they have a great clothing selection. I've gotten several really great sports bras for running that I couldn't live without. They have a few sales throughout the year that are pretty great too. I came into the store looking for a pair of Hoka's. I'm new to that brand and running in general, and honestly figured a store dedicated to running would be of more assistance helping me find/fit the right pair of shoes. The associate, Derek, just went on to tell me which shoe was which (not even describing fit, what type of running they are for, etc), and eventually tried on a pair I thought fit well in the store. I was basically asked "well, does it fit alright?" and nothing else. No help explaining how the shoe should fit, how my feet should be feeling, and I just assumed I had to trust that this $120+ pair fit fine. At the time of purchase, nothing regarding the return policy was clarified. After running in them once, I could tell as the run went on my feet became cramped and uncomfortable and attempted to return them the next day (with very little wear) only to be turned away and told that I now had the option to "purchase another pair in the right size". Jeez, if only I would have known I could go and buy another pair and give you even more commission for your lack of assistance, Derek! He had literally asked to go grab another pair a half size up that I could "buy", from the counter, and did not even offer to help fit them at this point! If the customer service was better initially, I wouldn't be in this situation, stuck with a pair of shoes that doesn't fit right, and out $130. My girlfriend works in healthcare and is loyal to Hoka, and knows plenty of physicians/students who wear them, but we will not be returning and actively advocating against Garry Gribble's to ANYONE going forward. I like their location as they are close to Target and Trader Joe's, which are also places that I shop at frequently. They also have the benefit of being a little more centrally located to downtown/midtown/Waldo KCMO...other stores (aka KC running company) are further out in the 'burbs. Decent selection of running apparel/shoes though my main purchases when I stop are fuel. They have a great selection of GU, Clif, Honey stinger, Nuun and other fuel brands. I'm not much of a runner. I kind of was a jogger and then I got busy and then I realized later that was a silly move. As a result, I've been working on getting back into the habit. My current shoes are OK. But lately, I've been feeling like I need a change and I plan on using them in the color run soon so, I don't want to really use them indoors after that ... I'd like to use them for yard work and taking the dogs to the dog park so if I step in something it won't be a big deal. These thoughts prompted me to start looking for a new pair of shoes. I went to a large sporting good store. I tried on some shoes. I liked a few, but I also got concerned that I was going to make a decision based on color rather than the best fit. "I really like how these feel, but I don't like how white the shoes are because they make my feet look huge!" So, I sucked it up and went to Garry Gribble's and why I have never gone to this place before for shoes is beyond me. I walked in and gave a brief explanation of my situation. The sales person took in the information and then actually started doing something I had grown unaccustomed to in the last few years. He measured my feet and had me walk a bit to see how I moved. He went to the back and returned with four options - one of them being the shoe I currently had. I informed him of that when we started. Those shoes quickly were eliminated. I ended up narrowing it down to the shoe I liked best and went with it. But guess what?! Even if it doesn't end up being the best choice, I have a chance to return the shoes. So long as I don't wear the shoes outdoors, I can return and exchange them within 30 days! The shoes here may be a little more. I didn't know the store was here and happened to see it while in the mall for something else. I just happened to have a 1.5 mile run the next morning so I stopped in to see if they had any advice. Mike was super helpful and sat down and talked with me about exactly what I wanted and needed to accomplish. He recommended some new insoles because upon looking at mine, discovered they were super thin and worn out. I put the new ones in and it made a world of difference. I really like this store because of how knowledgable the staff is on all things running. Except I picked the wrong day to come to this store because they were training a new-hire on the register so checking out was painfully slow (this didn't lower my rating at all because I know this wasn't the stores fault). The reason I couldn't give it 5 stars is because there is a price that comes with all the running essentials. I understand and accept the fact that good running shoes will set me back $100-$150, but $50 for a pair of running shorts, or $8 for a pair of socks? This just seems laughable to me. Called the store today with some questions about ordering online. Couldn't totally figure it out, so I asked if they had the same inventory and offers in the store. Was told that they do. I drove to the store (almost an hour for me) to find that the product I was looking for was actually not available. I've been going to Gary Gribbles for years and am just getting around to writing this review. As a pretty avid runner, I buy between two and four pairs of running shoes a year, and I always buy them from Gary Gribbles. They have a very informed staff and a pretty decent selection. I have a very unique shoe type/size so their aren't a lot of options for me to choose from but I always find something that works for me. Most other runners will have tons to choose from. The one thing I might say is that I kinda would like to see a bit more by way of apparel. Other than that, no complaints and I will be back in a few months for my next pair. I just started running after a 10yr hiatus of being in shape. I figured out pretty quick that my everyday tennis shoes were not going to cut it. So I figured that I would invest in some good running shoes. I went to Garry Gribble's on a Thursday afternoon so it wasn't very busy. I was promptly helped and they were very patient with me as I was explaining where my legs were hurting when I ran and I was asking him a million questions about it (turns out, I was just out of shape). Anyway, he explained the different types of running shoes and helped me try on several pairs. I could tell that he started to get a little...bored I guess...with helping me after about 20 minutes. Then it seemed like he was just going through the motions when I was trying to ask more questions about the different brands. I might have been a little "information needy" but if I am going to spend $100 on shoes I want to make sure they are the good ones. Eventually we found the right pair and everyone else in the store was very encouraging about me trying to take up running. I will definitely be going back there for my next pair of shoes and any other running gear that I need. For those interested, I ended up getting a pair of New Balance shoes and they have been a God-send. I am still hopelessly out of shape but at least my feet don't hurt when I'm running. read more

This is a great shoe store. I actually prefer the location in Independence. I find the staff there to be very friendly, patient and helpful. I have problem feet and now even more so as I"m getting older, but the staff have helped both my husband and I find several pairs of shoes that fit great. You'll probably end up paying $100+ for a good pair of athletic shoes, but I think it's worth it since I don't wear out shoes that often. I finally remembered to check this store out and it does seem to live up to its reviews! I just came in so I could find something to hold my phone and keys while I run. I was able to find one, and it was pink. That is okay for me but I was hoping for a more gender neutral color so my fiance could use it as well. No such luck. The staff seemed to have the physique of runners so I imagine they will know the products pretty well and will be able to help you. :-) If I need anything running related in the future I will definitely check this store out! read more

The only place to get your running gear. The staff are all runners & they know what you need. I love the running class on Monday nights & the mini clinics they run. I cannot imagine getting my supplies anywhere else. read more
