More Market Street

I collect aperitifs, liqueurs, amari, and digestives, so when I stumbled on Flatiron on a recent trip to San Francisco, I was intrigued and delighted. For one thing, it is in the stunning, luxurious Palace Hotel complex (my favorite hotel on the West Coast -- you have to see it to believe it) and on my favorite street in San Francisco, Market Street (a stone's throw from my other go-to hotel, the Marriott Marquis). Just a stroll up and down this street revives my spirits, every time. Flatiron has a store in NYC in the Flatiron district, natch. This store opened second but is as good if not better, bigger, and for me, closer. When you are a collector, you are always looking for boutique stores that sell niche and specialty products. Flatiron has some of the best and its inventory of Northern European fine wines and spirits makes it the first place I go when my local boutique doesn't have a product I want. Every holiday I search for new finds to give as gifts and add to my stash. I cook (don't faint) with these spirits and serve them in tiny crystal glasses when people stop by. They look and smell as delicious as they taste. This past New Year, I ordered a bottle of Sicilian Marsala from Flatiron. The brand is hard to find, impossible in Los Angeles and there are only one or two places that carry it in the US. The rest are in Europe. Imagine the shipping. Flatiron had it and not only that, got it into my hands in 4 days. During Covid, with FedEx, which has been known to fool around with deliveries lately (don't ask). Whatever Jedi mind trick Flatiron's wizards worked on FedEx, it was here in a flash, beautifully packaged in a special egg-crate gizmo that cradled the bottle like a baby. Flatiron has others of the best in my collection like Mallo Nocino, Lillet, Chartreuse (of course) and Elderflower. Please do shop there or online. They will take good care of you. Oh and btw, they have a killer newsletter that educates and entertains. Flatiron: I have an ask. Please carry Piedmontese Cardamaro -- scarce everywhere but a gem. Love this store!

Flatiron Wines and Spirits is a solid destination for your shopping consideration. Sure it is not a BevMo or Total wine etc, but it has a wonderful boutique feel with great service. Found a bottle of Knob Creek 12 price was a tad high but finding this bottle is hard. They had plenty of Blanton's ( price was pretty fair) Even had a bottle of Pappy 23 ( crazy prices but it is what it is). Highly recommended if you are downtown in the FiDi.

Thank you so much for the wine. Great customer service and quick response. Fast shipping. I loved having a pick up option locally in case I was not home. Everything was shipped perfectly and with care. I can't wait to enjoy the wines with my SO. Cheers!

This place is deceptively huge

What a find! Located on New Montgomery- next door to Palace Hotel. I needed to pick up a case of wine there & drove around twice looking for it. The great thing is there's a huge loading zone in front. Flatiron is deceptively huge. Labeled room after room with aisles & aisles of wines from different countries & regions. It's like a library for wine. I asked for an all purpose Pinot I could keep for party invite emergencies. The guy made a beeline to the perfect reasonably priced bottle. These guys really know their stuff. And bonus, there's a wine bar, great for sampling a few varieties. I also bought a hard to find Lillet Blanc. The two wines were put in a bag together. I stupidly put the bag on the back seat. After a hard break, the bag rolled off the seat & the Lillet, (thinner glass) shattered, leaving my car smelling like a dive bar. I drove home holding the dripping bag out the window. Luckily I wasn't stopped for any traffic violation. They also receive shipments from different states if you order something there. Anyway, I absolutely 100% recommend Flatiron.

This little place has HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS (possibly THOUSANDS) of wine selections and a small selection of craft beer. Friendly staff, well laid out store. The staff are *extremely* knowledgeable about the wines and can answer any question that a wine noob like myself just can't figure out. They've got hundreds of bottles for less than $20, but if you have money burning a hole in your pocket, they can definitely help you solve that problem too. Not much else to say, but if you're looking for a place near the business district to buy wine - you have found it my friend!

Loved the atmosphere and laid back feel of this tasting room! I came during the day mid week and had the whole place to myself. The wine list had a good variety and even though the majority of the list weren't CA wines, they were incredible. There were a few local wines available for tasting. I really loved the Bordeaux from South Africa. Jammy and peppery! If I wasn't traveling I would've definitely stocked up on it. Enjoy!

I give my highest recommendation to Flatiron Wines & Spirits. If you're ever in need of a nice bottle of wine, the staff here is second to none in providing the best options. They can work with your budget, preference, and occasion. I always make the effort to keep a couple of things on hold for my next visit to San Francisco. One of these days, I will definitely take the plunge and enroll in their wine program. I'd highly advise signing up for their newsletter as you'll be kept in the know of all the seasonal vino around town. Make sure to check out the tasting events, too! They have multiple ones throughout the week.

Oh my god is all I can say about this place. Lock me up in here and throw away the keys :-) it's a huge bottle shop in the city center or San Francisco and has a huge selection of wine, spirits, champagnes, aperitif and all sorts of rare and exotic stuff as well. It's split into multiple rooms and one could spend hours here browsing and checking out the selection. They have a shelves of wines from around the world and some interesting selections as well. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful when needed. I came to buy some champagne and was quite impressed with the selection and the prices were also reasonable. I believe they have a branch also in NY city. They do wine tastings on a regular basis and there is a board with the various tastings listed. I will definitely be back here again next time I am in town :-)

What you see inside here is basically just 1/8 of their full store and selection

I met here with an acquaintance to discuss something important over drinks & we had a special time. The nature of our discussion was certainly influenced in a relaxed manner by the mild volume music playing, soft lighting, and high ceilings. The interior was beautiful, very custom lighting covers & wooden racks. Somewhat large selection of wines/sake but it wasn't overwhelming due to the simplified menu that they provided. Service was top tier, a server stopped by about three times to collect empty containers, refill water, and check-in about how the drinks were. With a friendly expression on their face each time. The lucky dog sake juice box and beer combo was SUUUUCH a good move! I've been a fan of the lucky dog/cat/chicken brand, for their fun packaging of beers. However, I did not know that they craft sake wine boxes too. That is out of this world! And I believe that, to use a baseball metaphor, they "hit the ball out of the park!" On this one. The beer wasn't half bad either. Would I recommend going to Millay? Hell yeah dude!!!

It's not too far from the main street in the area, and the moment I got out of my uber, I knew this place would be a vibe! I came here at 7:30pm the day after Christmas, so it was empty. I love the vibe of Millay - artsy decor, pink neon lights, and cute seats to sit in. I tried two different types of clean + fruity sake, and it came in such a cute ceramics! The cashier helped us choose, and we were able to taste it before purchasing. I also loved their basket of Asian chips! They even made it a lil fancy by cutting the top and making it look like a bowl haha. A great spot for a small social gathering of 2-4 people. I love the chill vibes and intimate setting. I will defs be back!

The brewery and tasting room is located in an industrial part of the city. Upon arriving you walk right into the brewery and head to the tasting area in the back where tables are set up right next to the actual brewery. Flights are $15 each and we worked our way through all of them. They offer quite a range and our favorite was the spicy flight. Each flight came with a detailed explanation of what we were tasting... covering the brewing process, alcohol content, and food pairings for each sake... and there was plenty of room for questions. That kind of walkthrough makes a real difference, especially if you're newer to sake. You leave actually knowing something. A few things: there's a small bites menu, but you can bring your own snacks as long as you take your trash with you when you leave. Dogs are not allowed. There's plenty of free street parking. Tastings are only on Saturdays and first come first serve. I also can't rave enough about the owners who have a way of giving each group their full attention even when the room is full. Pricing is fair for what you're getting. The sake is genuinely good, and joining the club was an easy decision... members receive perks such as free flights and a discount when purchasing product. We can't wait to visit again.

I don't think the tours run daily, as there wasn't much going on when we went, but still fun to do a tasting. You don't find a local sake distillery in the states very often! They also offer a small menu of snacks to go with the tasting, but I found the pricing pretty expensive ($18 for half a tiny round of Mt. Tam cheese and a handful of crackers). We did the Sequoia and Seasonal flights. Really liked the nigori and kimoto (aged 5yrs) -- all the sake had nice, crisp, and clean finishes. The umeshu in the seasonal was pretty good, but probably my least favorite of the samples.

Staff were friendly and knowledgeable as well. I came in with a specific ask and they pointed me in the right direction. I also asked for some recommendations and he pulled a few bottles, all under $40. A super fun shop in Pac Heights. Two things that I wish were different, but perhaps just isn't written in the cards: (1) A lot of the wines are very high up on the shelves, which makes casual perusing very difficult. Asking the staff to climb up and grab random bottles just feels like a big ask. I personally like looking at the importer, ABV, and other details on the label to help me shop and this is only possible for about 50% of the wines that are accessible without a ladder; (2) Unfortunately, they no longer allow guests to purchase a bottle to drink in the shop, which is unfortunate because I love browsing the shelves at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant and finding a bottle to open up in the shop to drink. If you're looking for a great bottle shop to pick up something to drink at home or to give as a gift, this is a great spot. Where else are you going to find old bottles of vintage Cinzano?!
