Was passing by on the first day of a food trip to SF. My wife and I decided to stop in for a glass and to purchase a couple bottles for our stay. We were greeted with kindness and patience while explaining the regions and profiles we like. We were given a thorough tour of the inventory and we highly impressed with all tiers of the selections as well as the recommendations. Really small spot tucked in between the office buildings of FiDi. They have a great selection of wine and a small room dedicated to tastings. If you buy a bottle the corkage fee is $15 so that's what we did. If you buy by the glass the selections are pretty limited. Service wasn't the warmest but it was empty when we were there at 3 pm on memorial day so it was great to have the whole room to ourselves read more

I collect aperitifs, liqueurs, amari, and digestives, so when I stumbled on Flatiron on a recent trip to San Francisco, I was intrigued and delighted. For one thing, it is in the stunning, luxurious Palace Hotel complex (my favorite hotel on the West Coast -- you have to see it to believe it) and on my favorite street in San Francisco, Market Street (a stone's throw from my other go-to hotel, the Marriott Marquis). Just a stroll up and down this street revives my spirits, every time. Flatiron has a store in NYC in the Flatiron district, natch. This store opened second but is as good if not better, bigger, and for me, closer. When you are a collector, you are always looking for boutique stores that sell niche and specialty products. Flatiron has some of the best and its inventory of Northern European fine wines and spirits makes it the first place I go when my local boutique doesn't have a product I want. Every holiday I search for new finds to give as gifts and add to my stash. I cook (don't faint) with these spirits and serve them in tiny crystal glasses when people stop by. They look and smell as delicious as they taste. This past New Year, I ordered a bottle of Sicilian Marsala from Flatiron. The brand is hard to find, impossible in Los Angeles and there are only one or two places that carry it in the US. The rest are in Europe. Imagine the shipping. Flatiron had it and not only that, got it into my hands in 4 days. During Covid, with FedEx, which has been known to fool around with deliveries lately (don't ask). Whatever Jedi mind trick Flatiron's wizards worked on FedEx, it was here in a flash, beautifully packaged in a special egg-crate gizmo that cradled the bottle like a baby. Flatiron has others of the best in my collection like Mallo Nocino, Lillet, Chartreuse (of course) and Elderflower. Please do shop there or online. They will take good care of you. Flatiron Wines and Spirits is a solid destination for your shopping consideration. Sure it is not a BevMo or Total wine etc, but it has a wonderful boutique feel with great service. Found a bottle of Knob Creek 12 price was a tad high but finding this bottle is hard. They had plenty of Blanton's ( price was pretty fair) Even had a bottle of Pappy 23 ( crazy prices but it is what it is). Highly recommended if you are downtown in the FiDi. read more

What a find! Located on New Montgomery- next door to Palace Hotel. I needed to pick up a case of wine there & drove around twice looking for it. The great thing is there's a huge loading zone in front. Flatiron is deceptively huge. Labeled room after room with aisles & aisles of wines from different countries & regions. It's like a library for wine. I asked for an all purpose Pinot I could keep for party invite emergencies. The guy made a beeline to the perfect reasonably priced bottle. These guys really know their stuff. And bonus, there's a wine bar, great for sampling a few varieties. I also bought a hard to find Lillet Blanc. The two wines were put in a bag together. I stupidly put the bag on the back seat. After a hard break, the bag rolled off the seat & the Lillet, (thinner glass) shattered, leaving my car smelling like a dive bar. I drove home holding the dripping bag out the window. Luckily I wasn't stopped for any traffic violation. They also receive shipments from different states if you order something there. Anyway, I absolutely 100% recommend Flatiron. read more

This was my first time buying from this place, in fact my first time in a long time buying wine I wanted to care about. I'm just beginning to recover from years of not really wanting much to do with this stuff. But I needed a bottle of beaujolais from one of the 10 crus for a tasting, had identified Brouilly as one I'd bring, and flatiron had a better selection than anybody else in town. So I bought a bottle online, to be picked up sometime within a few weeks or month or two, whichever comes first. It's a very busy corner, their location, but if you call ahead they'll bring what you bought online out to your car. Very convenient service, though likely less available when things get really busy inside the store. Not exactly like one of those old-style hamburger driveins with carhops, but the thought did come to mind. Anyway, as I drove toward the store and was about a block away I called and sure enough as I approached the place (no parking in sight, so this service is well worthwhile for both customer and retailer) out comes a delightful young woman with my bottle in hand. Quick exchange and I was off and happy to have what I wanted... but wait just a minute, as I was driving across the GG bridge I noticed the label wasn't what I ordered at all, not a Brouilly but a Cote de Brouilly, which may not seem a big deal but in fact is something of a big deal and here's why. First I was looking for this particular DOC for a particular reason, no matter what that reason might be. Now, I'll have to buy another bottle of what I need. Second, this is most likely a better wine since the vineyards are on the side of a bit of a hill, not exactly a mountain just a fairly tall hill. Makes for better wine all else being equal. Finally, it does make me wonder how the mistake happened in the first place, other than that whoever grabbed the bottle either didn't read the label to confirm what it was, or worse didn't know the difference. I doubt the latter so it was just a mistake in the heat of the moment. As the price for the Cote is some bit higher than the wine from the flatlander Brouilly, and because I'll have to buy another bottle of something to replace this one, I'll just accept the upgrade as a gift, a token from serendipity. Next time I'll just park the car nearby and pick out a bottle myself, as the store looks interesting anyway. Who knows, maybe I'll get interested in wine again. ok so my attention has been redirected to this place, but instead of writing some kind of revisit review that usurps part 1, let's just pick it up where i left off. that being i still needed a bottle of Brouilly and the website for this place shows they have some on hand, unlike most other purveyors in town as far as i could tell on the 'net. so i decided to actually park my car this time and go inside. the effort was well worth the, well uh you know... the effort. this is really quite a good wine store as it turns out, perched as it is on an inconvenient corner. but there are spaces in front and on the side street with a white curb you can park for awhile. how long that "while" might be is anybody's guess. i was in the store at least 25 minutes and no parking official or tow truck happened by. i won't go into the breadth of selection here but only mention there were many wines on the shelf i haven't much seen on this side of the country (what i mean by that? well the market here is so dominated by california wine that consumers may not know much about what lies east of here. obviously there just isn't much demand for many wines otherwisee well supplied in metro new york and dc. so it was a bit of an old home week for me here, though still it lacked some of the "markers" i look for to get a quick gauge on how well the store suits me (to wit, spanna, ladoucette, tokaji, etc). anyway, it looks good. mrbadhabits says check it out read more

This little place has HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS (possibly THOUSANDS) of wine selections and a small selection of craft beer. Friendly staff, well laid out store. The staff are *extremely* knowledgeable about the wines and can answer any question that a wine noob like myself just can't figure out. They've got hundreds of bottles for less than $20, but if you have money burning a hole in your pocket, they can definitely help you solve that problem too. Loved the atmosphere and laid back feel of this tasting room! I came during the day mid week and had the whole place to myself. The wine list had a good variety and even though the majority of the list weren't CA wines, they were incredible. There were a few local wines available for tasting. Oh my god is all I can say about this place. Lock me up in here and throw away the keys :-) it's a huge bottle shop in the city center or San Francisco and has a huge selection of wine, spirits, champagnes, aperitif and all sorts of rare and exotic stuff as well. It's split into multiple rooms and one could spend hours here browsing and checking out the selection. They have a shelves of wines from around the world and some interesting selections as well. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful when needed. I came to buy some champagne and was quite impressed with the selection and the prices were also reasonable. I believe they have a branch also in NY city. They do wine tastings on a regular basis and there is a board with the various tastings listed. AMAZEBALLS! This was one of my favorite wine stores in NYC and I am so psyched that they're in SF now! Not to mention, super centrally located (RIGHT by Montgomery BART...and about a block from my office). This location is even better than the NYC shop. It is absolutely massive. Like the size of the new K&L, but a better-curated selection. Plus, they have a truly huge spirits section with all the weird, old school things people are using again in cocktails. They have an absolutely awesome selection of wines, including some of my favorite smaller labels - like Bow & Arrow in Oregon or Mount Eden here in California. The staff is really friendly and helpful. They're also going to be doing tastings with some regularity (sign up for email notices!) - and eventually, they'll serve food with them from the attached hotel. This is literally a godsend to this neighborhood and SF in general. An awesome selection and fantastic staff to help you navigate it. I know where I'll be going for my wine needs now! read more

Flatiron has a great selection of wine and spirits and because their sister store is on the other coast - they have a broader selection of european wines that you might not find in the backyard of Napa. The folks are friendly and they have turned me on to some tasty wines that I would have never found on my own. They also have 'hard to find' spirits like a bottle of bourbon I had tried in Seattle but had not found previously in local stores. First time customer here and have not been in their beautiful (surely, by seeing the pre-covid photo's posted) shoppe. I could not be more impressed, ordered two bourbons on Tuesday, and they arrived to my home 48 hours later. They were packed extremely well. I've definitley added this business to me checklist when searching for spirits and possibly wine. Had I ordered this from K&L, they would have made me wait 2-4 days to transfer it from San Carlos yadda yadda yadda. They ran out anyway. Way to go Flatiron! read more

One would assume in the heart of the Financial District/SoMa, especially located in the same building as the historic and super swank Palace Hotel, that this place would try to take advantage of the location and business-y clientele, and charge ridiculous prices. Not the case at_all. Flatiron has a variety of both fancy and affordable wines and spirits, they even have a $15 wine area that includes a mix of unique and interesting domestic and foreign wines for as low as $9 a bottle. Liquors are also very reasonable. Example, up the street on Sutter, The Whisky Shop is selling Laphroaig 10 for $60 last I checked, but at Flatiron, they've got it at the typical BevMo price of $42. Can't beat that, even through mail-order services. Just might be helpful to steer clear of the beer aisle as typical mass marketed beers are premium priced (example, a 6 pack of Sierra Nevada is $12.99---what?!) Staff are always super friendly and helpful. Tell them your budget and they can take you around the racks with all the different types of bottles they have for sale. None of them are wine snobs either, so if you have questions or aren't sure about something, they'll gladly explain a wine's flavor profile, background, region, etc. Haven't yet tried their tasting room, but if you plan to order food, I hear it will cost you a lot since they have to order from the Palace Hotel's menu, and there's a premium, or something to that effect. All in all, this is my go-to place for wine and liquors, for both personal and professional events. read more

I once asked if there was a good value bottle of Rose from the selections on the front table and his response was: Uh, not really, these are all pretty low quality (referring to bottles that were upwards of $40). One of the hidden gems in SoMa that I almost want to keep it a secret... but they deserve to get tons of great business because the wine selection is tremendous, the staff is knowledgable, and the shopping experience here is very pleasant. They also host a lot of wineries who come and you can sample their wines for free ! Yes -- free - gratis -- no charge. Of course, if you really like it, pick up a bottle or two! Cute space - I just wished their tasting room was a tad bigger but it's great to come by after work to sample some wines. Staff is very polite! Osi is great and her dog is super cute. I'm a huge fangirl of Flatiron Wines & Spirits! As soon as they opened, half of my office took a field trip to their shiny new SF digs. What space; what style! I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of shopping for wine in such an aesthetically-pleasing and functional space. There's plenty of room to move around, so you don't feel rushed or claustrophobic. The staff does a great job of curating their wines - yes, you'll recognize some of your favorites but I also enjoy checking out some of their more eclectic bottles. If you're looking for something more up-and-coming - like Georgian and Croatian wines - you'll find them here! And they have quite a few bottles in what I consider the 'sweet spot' range: $20-25 bottles that drink more like $30-35 bottles. They have a gorgeous tasting room should you feel like popping in for a pour, and they seem to host tastings on the regular. Recently I rented out their private room downstairs, which is also drop-dead gorgeous and comfortably accommodates about 25 guests. Ousi did a super job making the wines come to life for our guests, and it was wonderful to work with her in the weeks leading up to our event. My only not-so-glowing feedback is that if you host an event at Flatiron, you can only purchase cheese boards from the Palace Hotel... and hotels notoriously charge twice as much for cheese that's only half as good as you'd find at the local French cheese shop. Still, our event was FABULOUS and I wouldn't hesitate partnering with Flatiron again. How cool is this place? I didn't know it existed until my friend invited me here to grab a glass of wine in their tasting room. Flatiron clearly sells beer, wine, and spirits, but they also have a few rooms where you can enjoy food and beverages in an intimate setting. We first discovered the private tasting room downstairs, which is apparently only for patrons who purchase BOTTLES of wine. Will have to do that next time. On the main floor, there's a small tasting room with a few tables and some barstool seating. Waiters wander around to take orders, so our group of girls ordered glasses of bubbly to celebrate our catch-up session. A few things to note... first, there are no non-alcoholic drinks except for water in case anyone is wondering. Also, there's a food menu, which we didn't read carefully enough. We ordered amazing truffle fries but ended up paying $20 something for them because of a delivery charge. The food is made in the Palace Hotel kitchen then brought over to Flatiron. Totally not worth the price, but they were good nevertheless. Lastly, the service is strange here. It's difficult to track down a waiter if you need something. And then when the waiter handed me the bill, he just stood there and waited for me to sign it on the spot. Kinda awkward. I realized that he was probably from the hotel and not with Flatiron. To pay for wine (which is separate from any food ordered) you would stop by the front counter before exiting the building. This entire multi-step process was annoying, but now I know! Next time, I would maximize my experience by coming here just for a few glasses of wine and potentially a bottle but no food. Overall cool find and a must-visit in the Financial District! read more

Huge and well-stocked wine shop in the heart of SoMa / FiDi. The number and depth of varietals they carry rival just about any other business in the area - I was surprised to find my friend's favorite and hard-to-find Sancerre, and I've received similar feedback from friends that the selection here is legit. As a point of reference, the cost of the bottle of Sancerre was at parity with wine.com (without the shipping fee!). They have a small tasting room on the side which seats about 12 and which can hold and additional 5-6 at capacity. You can buy a bottle at the wine shop and pay a small corkage fee to drink the bottle there. Great deal but the tasting room gets packed so it's best to get there early. As a Yelp employee, I got 10% off which made it an extra nice deal! read more

Came in on a Friday around 5:30pm for a tasting. They had 3 bottles they were tasting for free and I think they rotate through what they're tasting. (I'm not sure when exactly they do free tastings and when they don't.) While I didn't particularly like the varietals they were pouring that evening, the free tasting was a nice perk since pretty much no one gives out free booze. The people there are pretty friendly and they seem very knowledgable about their wines and recommendations. We ended up staying for a while longer to do a flight of 4 wines for $25. All the wines open for flights/pours were within a reasonable price range for the bottle price. The space they have is laid out beautifully. I could definitely spend hours in there browsing their vast selection. The only downside about the space is that even though they have a lot of it, they kind of have a very small tasting room so it did get pretty busy by the time we left (around 6:30/7, no seats left). I wouldn't advise bringing a group of more than 4 unless you're coming off-hours. My favorite part about this store is that they also have a decent selection of spirits too! I paid particular attention to the whiskey selection and I thought they had decent picks. I also did some price-comparison and found that all the prices were very competitive! (I didn't think that would be possible with its prime location downtown.) This place is a little heaven of its own and definitely has a lot of potential to do very well in SF. I've signed up for their newsletter for their weekly tasting events and I'm looking forward to coming back and discovering more wines here! read more

OMG OMG OMG! Flatiron is such a great addition to FiDi, and reminds me a more modern version of K&L wines by the Ballpark. Having said that, I still prefer K&L due to their overly friendly staff that roams about, helping you select the perfect bottle of wine for your occasion / price point. You don't get that experience at Flatiron unless you ask, but getting lost amongst the various rooms of wine, which seems to go on for ever, is a unique experience and if you know what you're looking for, you'll likely find it here. They also carry a rather large selection of international wines, which are intimidating but also fun to explore. One of the coolest features of Flatiron are the tastings, which are sometimes free and allow you to experience new, local labels and make new friends. If you'd like to try a bottle in the store, there is a corkage fee (I believe $10), which feels reasonable given the location / decor. I highly recommend signing up for their email list if you're interested in learning more about future events / sales, etc. I give Flatiron 4.5 stars but I'm rounding down because they consistently don't have prices listed for all of their wines, which makes it annoying have to go to the front counter to ask each time you find something new. They've also charged me an incorrect price a few times, which as a consumer is annoying to discover and then have to correct. I work in the area and never knew it was there until a friend chirped that he loves the wine there. I was burnt out on Trader Joe's pedestrian wine and froggered across New Montgomery. I was lost in the labyrinth and was happily surprised that there were affordable wines for a worker bee like me. There was zero attitude with the employees and they knew their stuff. Flori and Heather were nice, knowledgeable and courteous. I was a convert. Then (dun da da dummmmm) Corona struck. All was quiet. I would be zooming and going back to TJ's. I hesitantly called Flatiron. Paul picked up and was reassuring that I could order with him or online. He was very friendly and service-oriented. I must say, businesses like this are rare.
