The original Flamingo is but a ghost town with just a few remaining foundation remnants left. Today it is the most Southern headquarters of the Everglades National Park, overlooks Florida Bay, and marks the southern end of the 99 mile Wilderness Waterway as well as the roadway end point of Everglades National Park. GPS: 25°08'28.96" N 80°55'25.73" W You won't find any Flamingos here. They were long ago eradicated with the last significant sighting having occurred back in 1902. But you will find beautiful scenery, a large camping area for tent, motorhome and trailer, tour boats, canoeing, a marina, boat ramps, an open in the winter only restaurant, a visitor and nature interpretive center. Also, plenty of birds including the American bald eagle, the osprey, various pelicans, gulls and the American crocodile. There are also a good number of raccoons, but you want to watch out for them when camping, since you'll find them to be not only food hungry but highly aggressive. Though camping is available during some of the summer months, you don't want to do it. The mosquitos will eat you alive and even during the winter months be sure to have bring plenty of repellant and best have your tent or other facility equipped with "no-see-um" screens. Before venture to Flamingo, remember to fill your vehicle up as you'll be over 40 miles from any gasoline station. Then for food, though there is one open during winter month's restaurant, my suggestion would be to bring your own. Flamingo is just about as remote an area as you'll ever find, surrounded by the pristine beauty of Florida Bay and the only everglades in the world. There is something about the remoteness, the vastness, the colors of the water and sky that are difficult to describe or put into words, but the uniqueness of it all is literally unparalleled by anything found elsewhere.

Camp site is far! Really far, BFE far! This place is amazing, very rural! This is real camping for real campers! If your looking for Disney fort wilderness this is the complete opposite. We took our boat and camped on the beach and hells bay chickee hut. The beach was super difficult to get too, the bay was rough and the tides drop drastically. We got stuck a couple times and we where in a flats boat! The chickee huts are difficult to find, it's basically a platform on the water in the middle of no where. Very dangerous, very easy to get lost! Don't try to canoe and wing it! Bring a lot of bug stray or stay when it's cold and windy! I had mosquito bites all over! Highly recommend if your up for the challenge! I left there feeling more like a man than ever! It changed me, after camping there I started chewing tabaco and drink Budweiser. They call it Hells bay because it's hell to get in and get out

The entrance fee is $35 per vehicle, and once you enter, I highly recommend stopping by the Visitor Center to check which park ranger tours are available that day and to get updates on weather conditions. The park map will be your best friend; aside from certain areas, cell service can be very spotty to completely nonexistent. I've explored almost all the trails throughout the Glades, and I definitely suggest packing accordingly and bringing plenty of snacks and water. Highly recommended. It's as impressive as the grand canyon.

We walked about the visitor center and the grounds. Learned more about the native wildlife from a teacher there. Many others were there for kayaking, paddleboarding, & fishing. The history of sponge harvesting in the bay was very educational. From here we took a two hour boat tour on the Stingray with pilot, Rick & tour gude Daniel. We went out to the northern end of the Florida keys as far as Boca Chita. A short hike & history lesson-was a private island most of the 1900s. Now it's a public site with a boat dock, beach, picnic area, & overnight camping by reservation. Help staff at the visitor center, clean restrooms, and a small aquarium. Recommend at least an hour here. But plan a full day to really explore. This National Park is a must see when in South Florida. Also out of Homestead is Everglades NP with for visitor centers for access. Thank you to all the staff & the boat tour guides. Nick & Liz, Albany, NY, USA

The second site was better with reefs and warmer water. Even with wetsuits the majority us were shivering the whole 45 minutes journey back to the land. Our captain spotted dolphins on our way back, there were 4-5 of them in clear waters and swam near to our boat. if you have two or more people, i think charter a boat is better.

There were shade canopies along the queue but they were not deployed for some reason. Staff seemed a bit disorganized, groups were confused on where to go and given mixed directions from staff members. The experience on the boat was nice and we saw a variety of wildlife. She gave us some history of the Everglades and was great about finding us gators. The airboats only cover a very small circle portion of the Everglades, which was the only disappointing part. I was hoping there would be more open canals to float/drive down to get more of the airboat experience. The time on the water is about 45 minutes. We also got to stick around to catch the alligator show hosted by the Gator Boys. Our package also came with a pic with a baby alligator which was cool to hold. It did feel a bit like an assembly line, even though it was just our group taking the pics, where we didn't have time to hold the baby gator or ask too many questions about it. Def stop in the back to see the albino gators and other wildlife.
