First of all, since my dog chewed these up 5 years ago, no cobbler would fix them. Artisans, brick and mortar, in rich neighborhoods too, Evanston, Glenview, highland park. Everyone said no. I recently moved to edge water, saw Fix Your Kicks while walking to the store. I told them what I wrote above, but they said they were sure they'd be able to do something, just needed to see them. BEWARE of Fix Your Kicks on Thorndale! They had my boots for 3 weeks (after saying it would only take 1) to repair the sole and zipper. Sole was repaired but not the zipper. Brought them back and he was going to charge me $60 to put in a new zipper. Said it would be a week, it was another 3 weeks with no text or call. Went to pick them up and they are drunk in the shop. (One guy was visibly wasted and swaying.) Could see that the zipper was not replaced and still broken. So I took them without paying. They came out threatening us and took a pic of my license. Called me to threaten me again to pay for boots that have clearly not been repaired. (?!?!) Definitely not fixing any kicks there. P.S. Their customer service is at such a level that even though I neglected to pick up my shoes before they closed, the owner Joshua came out an hour and a half after closing so that I could pick up my shoes for an early-morning trip the next day. Dropped off some Redwing boots to be for new soles. Picked up three weeks later, $120, and they didn't stay on two weeks, so I brought them back. They didn't call back so I went in about a month later, paid another $40, three weeks later the soles were coming off again. Left a message to follow up with me, to no avail. I really wanted to support this local business, but I just can't. I do not recommend using them. read more

I tried very hard to patronize this store after reading about it on DNAinfo, but every time I went during their business hours, the same sign - "Back in 15 minutes" - was hanging on the door. Once or twice I tried waiting ten minutes or so, but frankly, if you say you'll be open and available for business, then someone should be there. I REALLY wanted to like this place. It's within walking distance and DNAinfo really sold me on the supporting a local grad thing, but it's just not that great. It's way overpriced and who the bell knows what their hours actually are. To replace a Birkenstock sole is something like $85. You can just buy new birks for that price. I just recently took a pair of Christian Louboutin and a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti's to have the soles bleached as the sole were starting to turn yellow. I was told to give them a week before I can pick them up. I waited the week and stopped in to see if they were ready. one of my shoes were still in the bleaching process and he asked for a little more time for both of them because he wanted to do it once more I told him that I will call in a couple of days to find out the progress when I tried to call a couple days later I could not seem to reach them as it said that the call cannot be completed I tried for two days after that still unable to reach anyone at the shop. I decided to call one of the other locations with no luck so I sent a text message. I didn't receive a reply until two days later saying that that store should be open which was not at all what I was asking in a text message. when I stop back in there I could see my shoes in the distance and to my surprise they were amazingly white he went and grab shoes andr brought the counter and service in the sky look for the desk bags. As he was doing that I took a closer look at the shoes to find that they weren't bleach the painted over with white paint. I wasa little shocked considering that I never received a phone call asking if they can do this. Unable to find the dust bags he asked if I come back a little bit later to pick them up I agreed and figured I would touch the other gentleman when I came back to pick them up. Unfortunately I became busy that day and never made it backI tried to call for a couple days in a row to find out what the hours were so that I could get back in there to get the shoes but no such luck is it still continue to give me the same message finally stopping in there to pick the shoes up stranger them and it was working before So I just decided to expressed to him my dissatisfaction with the job that was supposed to be done and letting him know that The value of the shoes are in our last he proceeded to tell me know that they were not in that if anybody was to say anything that you use that I was to tell them that the sellers were just restored but they were not restored and they were painted over and tap that make matters worse he still asked me to pay the balance and when I asked him how I would go about taking the paint off instead of him offering to do so himself he proceeded to tell me what to buy so I can take the paint off so all in all I paid to have a service doneMy shoes are ruined and I now have to pay for to have paint removed off of my shoes that was in originally they're $65 lost. This place was recommended by a friend and I am glad I came here. They were very accommodating and friendly. They cleaned my lavender colored addias and made them look brand new. I was worried about the color changing but they walked me thru the whole process. The price was affordable for everything they did and will be returning to them in the future! read more

I dropped off my shoes at the other location on Western. The owner Joshua gladly took them to the Thorndale location which is more convenient for me he told me when the shoes would be ready and I went and picked them off. Now they look like a brand new pair I am very happy with the work that him and his employees have done. Plus this store is super convenient if you ride the Cta red line because it is just a couple steps off Thorndale station. Happy to have come here and not going to any other place where they charge more money. read more

My experience at FYK on Thorndale was horrible, though I acknowledge that it may be unique. I apologize for this review being so long. I am not typically a complainer, but my experience at FYK warranted an extensive review. I had heard a lot about FYK through DNAInfo Chicago. They loved Joshua Marin, the owner, and wrote several articles about his gym shoe refurbishing and new stores. I walked into FYK Thorndale excited and ready to be a pleased customer. It was good luck that Josh was working when I dropped my Timberland boots off. He was really nice at first. He told me that the boots -- which were well worn -- would look almost new when he was done with them, with the uppers treated and the soles replaced with similar Vibram Lug BOOT soles. Based on the work he did with gym shoes, there was little doubt in my mind he would follow through on his word. Over the next two months, I went from an excited customer to an extremely disappointed customer. When I returned the first time for the boots, they had a generic SHOE sole on them, the leather uppers were untouched (aka still very worn-looking), and were covered in a mysterious green dust. I walked back in immediately and asked for the shoes to be done right, with moisturizer added to the leather upper and the correct Vibram Lug soles for boots put on. They assured me it would be done right. I returned a week or so later and the boots had a non-Vibram sole. The upper still looked pathetic, but I knew I could take them home and make them look much better with mink oil. Josh was not there. His brother/cousin (?) was able to get Josh on the phone for me. Though I did not raise my voice, Josh did raise his voice, and was rude and disrespectful throughout the entire conversation, frequently interrupting me. Josh insisted that I had said to do nothing to the upper and that he never told me the sole would be Vibram. To be candid, this was an outright lie. The first day, I had asked SPECIFICALLY if the sole would be Vibram Lug and the only stipulation I had was that he not use polish on the upper. He replied that a Vibram sole would be much more expensive and asked that I pay the difference. I insisted he follow through on his word. After weathering his storm of anger, I was finally able to get him to agree to the original transaction agreement. I finally picked up my boots today. They had a Vibram SHOE sole (not the Lug sole, as agreed) and the uppers still looked rough. Meanwhile, the brother/cousin-guy (who oddly calls everybody "Boss," which is exceedingly annoying), was doing an AMAZING job of touching up a pair of refurbished sneakers. Why could they not do this quality of work on my Timbies?? I still do not know. I wanted to be happy. I did not go there looking for a problem. They are obviously artists when it comes to sneakers. I just wanted my boots to be resoled correctly, as I paid for them to be done. I do not know why Josh and his henchmen could not do the right thing or even acknowledge that they did not do the right thing. Not only is it bad business, it's bad human behavior. It indicates weak character.   What I do know is there is an old Vietnam veteran behind the Loyola stop that does a great cobbling job, though has weird hours. But guess what? He is old and comes from a time when standards meant something. He follows through on his word like men used to do. When you say "Vibram Lug" he knows exactly what you're talking about. And he did. I paid him $90 today and he will return my boots exactly how I want them to be done by Tuesday. I should have just gone to him to begin with. I'm done with Josh, his horrible manners, his shoddy work, his disrespect, and his weak character. read more

I should have listened to the other reviews. I moved recently. While packing I rediscovered a pair of shoes I'd somewhat forgotten about. I used to wear them all the time, so I'll admit they were pretty beat up. I brought them in on a Wednesday, and told they'd be ready in a week. I called the following Wednesday. They weren't ready, but was told they'd be there the next day. So far, not a huge deal. I go the next day, and they weren't there. The employee called the ownder (I'm assuming) and he was only a block away with them. Cool, so far still no probably. He gets there, and they are not done. I guess the employee hadn't communicated what exactly needed to be done. I was told he could have them ready by Saturday. Okay, this point I'm a little upset but not completely pissed off. I go in Monday, so even give them a little extra time, and they still weren't done. Okay, now I'm getting upset. The employee has the owner call me. I don't recall there being an apology or anything. He didn't seem to understand why I was upset even. My time is too valuable (if only to me) to deal with going back and forth. Will not be back! read more

For a new business fix your kicks has been doing great so far, I brought in a pair of white running shoes that turned yellow over time and for what ever reason everything I tried didn't help. After a session at FYK they'd look like new with the exception of the use I put over a 2 year time period. Aside from fixing shoes they also stock shoes that you're allowed to buy off a shelf. Some well known brands and well known shoes! They also do custom work and have examples around there shop to give you an idea. Over my experience was great, thank you!! read more

Overpriced, Incompetent, and No Business Sense. My boot was split down the back seam, just above where the heel slides down into the shoe bed. They described reinforcing the seam with a patch inside (which they did not do - rather they just narrowed the boot further and stitched into weak leather). So, the first fix split in the same place before I even saw it and they told me to return in ANOTHER week. Second fix was STILL not reinforced from within so the seam split AGAIN immediately when I tried the boot on. THEY WANTED TO CHARGE ME FULL PRICE ANYWAY!!! Long story short: After waiting 2+ weeks, I paid 1/3 the original price for a boot more ripped than when I brought it in. Had they not charged me for NOT FIXING THE BOOT they'd have won my good will and possible return business. As it is I came home disgusted and wrote this scathing review. read more
