I'll admit i was a little skeptical going into this. i'm a young(ish) and single woman living alone; first time homeowner...i did the yelp project thing where they message a couple of businesses at once and 4 businesses replied. gary was a little more expensive than everyone else because they do a 2-hour minimum at $120.00/hour but after talking to him, i knew they were who i wanted to go with, and based on all the work they did for me, i think the price was more reasonable than the other 3 vendors. the day of my appointment, gary ended up being tied up at another job so his son Josh came alone. Josh was SO polite, knowledgeable, considerate, mindful, efficient...i was really impressed. i had been putting off home improvements for a long time but it was getting to a point where my quality of life was going down. here is all that i asked him to do: - remove my old broken doorbell and install a hardwired ring camera (my mail had been stolen several times so extra security was needed) - reprogram my ceiling fan and light because i somehow got onto the same frequency as my neighbor so my lights were randomly turning on ALL the time - install baseboards to a bathroom remodel the previous contractor left unfinished - install a bidet i sent josh a photo of the baseboards i picked out and he did all the measuring super quickly and went off to home depot. he brought all the tools necessary with him. he really did a beautiful job with everything. it's like a whole new bathroom. i could detail the entire encounter, but here is what really stood out to me: i wasn't really tracking the time, but he was. after he finished what i asked of him, i was like "oh, is that it?" and he said "actually i still have like 30 minutes..i noticed [this] seems uneven, can i look at it?" and then he fixed MORE THINGS around my house! he worked quickly and efficiently. he took his shoes off when working on my carpeted area. he moved my contact lens case in my bathroom so it wouldn't get dusty while he was working. all these little things i wouldn't have even thought of but left such a good impression. i will definitely call them again in the future and recommend that you do too. read more

The quote says $120\hour for two guys. The owner came alone and did some very minor work around the house. When he finished after 2 hours he said it was $240. I asked why I would pay $120/hour for one person and he said it's the same price per hour regardless of one or two guys. That just doesn't make sense and when would I pay $120 hour to do very basic handyman work. Two people would have finished in half the time. Make sure you understand the cost before having the work completed. read more

Gerard helped remove and install my ceiling fan. He did a flush mount installation and had to make adjustments to make this install work. I needed a smaller blade span installed. He ran into a small issue during install. He explained the challenges he was running into and was able to explain or give options to consider. Communication was great. Ultimately, he made it work and got it set up and working perfectly. Happy he was able to come almost immediately the same day despite his schedule being booked thru end of the month. This turned out to be something of a disaster for me. Gary and his sons (who are young guys and apparently lack fundamental skills as handymen) handled three separate projects for me. One of the jobs was my front door to keep it from sticking. Gary cut so much off the bottom of the door that you could see light through it, and insects were able to crawl in. I had to hire another handyman to come and work on it to repair and close the gap. He also did a patch and paint on some damage on my hearth. The hearth wasn't sanded before the paint job (which Gary's son attempted) and looks terrible, and you can still see the patchwork through the thin coat of paint. I'm having a professional painter come and strip it down and redo it. All told, I lost about $400 as a result of having to redo everything. The other odd thing is that I had a hammer sitting out to hang some artwork. Gary's son must have grabbed my hammer when they were packing up. I let him know but they never returned it; I had to buy another. Weird. read more

There was a leak in my kitchen faucet. I bought a new one, but since it was rusted at the bottom, I decided it's better to ask a professional to come in and replace it. I needed help hanging curtain rods so I sent a message to Gary. I was able to schedule an appointment very quickly. The owners son & their business partner came to install everything. They installed 6 curtain rods, built a console & nesting tables, as well as helped carry a heavy mirror upstairs. I explained how I desired the curtain rods to look & I was hoping they understood my vision. I was so happy when I saw them because it's exactly how I pictured it in my mind. My tables turned out great & I'm so glad they got my new full length mirror upstairs safely & took it out of the box for me. This is just my experience. We had a need to remove and reinstall 5 solar panels. Gary gave us a good quote and confirmed an appointment for 11AM. Two hours later we've heard nothing from him even after multiple phone calls and texts. Highly recommend. We needed a door and threshold fixed in a rush. We had someone else give us a quote prior to Gary, who said we needed to replace the whole door and door frame. The initial contractor (nice guy) couldn't do the job for another week, so we contacted Gary. Gary brought back down the cost significantly since was able to just fix the broken part of the door and the jam/threshold, and it looks great. As a side note, I was working from home while my fiancé was at work, and I felt very comfortable alone with Gary at the house. I needed a hanging ceiling lamp replaced because I did not have the right equipment to reach the 14 foot high ceiling and I was on a tight timeline. He responded quickly and thought he could come the same day, Friday. Turns out he got tied up on the previous job and could not make it. He made a point of coming on Saturday to get it done on time. First, my wife's review: W - Who was that playing the piano? Me - That was Josh, then Michael joined with the right hand. W - They were really, really good! Before that, Josh and Michael took care of business. I had an outdoor camera, under the second story eaves, that would not connect to the router. They swapped it for a new camera I had purchased. Then, they inspected a second story rain gutter that was not functioning properly. After I reprogrammed the older camera, they mounted it under the second story eaves, to monitor the other end of the pool. Finally, they modified a piece of flashing so that it would no longer obstruct a downspout. Well worth the $120 per hour (two-hour minimum) to keep me off of a tall ladder. read more

Nice guy, very skilled, very reasonable rates, does it all. we had him come out to fix a window that needed a build up (gap under after counter removed), as well as to put window moulding around it. Clean, efficient, and quick. Actually, since he was so efficient, I had him install a new wall mount stainless range hood, appliance install as well as the plumbing in our new sink. During the process, he had to move a gas line for us. All of this went off without a hitch, and came out beautiful - didn't get the feeling you get with others where they keep trying to bump up costs throughout job. I called Gary about a week ago to see if he could help me with a treadmill assembly. Even though this may not be the type of work he does regularly, he was still kind enough to give me an appt. He came over yesterday and did an amazing job with the assembly. Even though they advertise treadmills to be "easy" to assemble at home, I know that I never would've been able to do it myself. If I could give 0 stars, I would. Hired Gary to do some service for our family home. He specified to the owner that it was "too hot" to work and came in the late evening hours, or sent his son and wife for small amount of time (45 minutes to an hour). When the owner asked where he was as he had questions, the son specified he was "picking up the kids from school". He broke our kitchen screen in two places, took some supplies we paid for, and on the last night of his work (he usually only worked a few hours at night) made some not so positive comments to me about my mother (not acceptable for a worker getting paid to do a job), followed by stating he & his family wanted to go see the concert at the lake and needed a member to get him, then argued with the owner about 47 cents when he owes us a new screen (he did offer to fix it and we declined, as we don't want his services anymore). The work was ok (we need to hire a painter to touch up or re paint his work). As a manager myself, that isn't (in my opinion) professional behavior. I'd look elsewhere for services. Had it not been for hurricane Hillary, this job would not have been completed. You do the job in a timely manner, work hard, collect your pay and leave. Would never use him again for a plethora of reasons.. read more

Josh was very sweet and knowledgeable about what he was fixing. We needed a new light fixture for our veranda so Josh went to Home Depot and send me 6 different photos of options. Gary Velasco and his son installed a door and it was done well. HOWEVER he installed an air lock on our dishwasher and charged us $320. It leaked 2 gallons of water daily so we called him, texted him and e-mailed him more than a dozen times over a one month period and got no response. We are going to have to call another handyman to fix his work. When I criticized his work, professionalism and told him I would post his performance on yelp and with our HOA at Laguna Woods he responded immediately not to fix his mess but to show contempt for us that he didn't care and was not going to come and fix his faulty installation. I wouldn't let him fix anything else for us and I will tell anyone who asks what I think of his performance. I suggest that no one who uses him pays him until the job is done and done right. read more

Gary went the extra miles, literally. He came to my house which is not even in his area. He drove 67 miles to my house. I was so excited when he said he would still come. He was on time, very professional, funny and very personable. I had 12 fluorescent lights in my bathrooms and kitchen which I wanted changed out to 65 watt bulbs. Gary suggested that I go with LED's and I'm so glad I listened to him. Never have to worry about changing bulbs again as I have 12 foot ceilings. Gary was very meticulous and thorough in all aspects of the job. He took his time and made sure everything was perfect. Gary and his sons are dependable, professional and yet also a lot of fun. I hired them to rebuild a fence around a large air/heat unit at the side of my house. Not only did they do an excellent job on this fence but they were able to fix a number of problems I needed help with around my house.
