First and foremost John at 5 Star Fence deserves major credit for how helpful he was throughout my fence build with a neighbor who wasnt too happy with my project. He was very patient, very knowledgeable, never once pushy, and the quality of the work was better than promised. All the members of the work crew were equally courteous, knew what they were each doing and worked very efficiently as a team. I was nervous getting the project started but once the crew showed up they handled everything (even a few unexpected obstacles) like absolute professionals. Most importantly for me, I needed the fence built RIGHTTTTTT up to the property line based off survey markers. John and the crew did an impeccable job under what could be considered "hostile" conditions. In these situations you need a contractor that is 100% working for your best interest and that is exactly what John and 5 star delivered. My search for a reputable fence company first began in November of 2017. Fast forward April 2018 and I finally found one that checked all the boxes. In that time, I contacted and asked for quotes from what seemed like every single ironworking or fencing company in So Cal. Many did not respond. However, for those that did, I was greeted with absurdly high quotes, incomplete itemized breakdowns, hidden up charges or estimators that just didn't bother showing up. Five Star Fence proved otherwise. My Project consisted of over 150ft of simple iron railing fence, a front gate and custom size sliding gate for the driveway. I don't have a lot of space and this particular property is on a slope. Due to my previous experiences, I was reluctant to pull any triggers on the job. However, this is why I ultimately did chose Five Star Fence: Communication: I remember emailing Five Star Fence for a quote. The following day, I was greeted with a phone call from a very kind lady by the name of Lucy. I was very detailed with my requests and even had pictures and measurements. A day later, I got my quote. This initial experience was so smooth and easy, it left me with a good feeling. This was extremely important for me as I needed a company that I could trust and depend on to do it right the first time. For me, if a company shows an eagerness to please, it will reflect on their attitudes on the job site. Five Star Fence was by far the most communicative out of all the companies I've contacted. But what about the price... Price: I was reluctant yet very eager to open the emailed quote from Five Star Fence. To my surprise, they came in lower than all the companies I've contacted. Just to give you a sense of how much lower, I once was quoted a price for almost 3x the amount of what Five Star Fence wrote up. It was quite a surprise. Workmanship: So with such a great price, you'd think you'd get sub-par quality or workmanship. That was definitely not the case with Five Star Fence. The iron fence is strong. The hinges are beefy and line right up. The custom sliding gate that needed to be built on site was reinforced. They dug, cemented and made sure all the posts were aligned. I inspected each one of the welded areas before they left and all were clean and sturdy. They did their work, but most of all made me feel involved because of the specific questions they asked unique to my property. Professionalism: I wish all contractors were like this. I never got a "NO". In fact, if they did find something odd with a request, rather than saying no, they'd lay out other options for me to choose. That's how it should be done because it left me feeling all options were explored. This ultimately further justified my decision with going with Five Star Fence. Completion Time: From quote to the final sign off, it took about 2 weeks to get my new fence in. It took 2 days for the quoting process. 1 day for a person to come out and do more exact measurements. A few days to gather all materials and 3 days to complete the entire project. It probably would have gone faster if I was more readily available, but their efficiency and trustworthiness to get questions answered quickly and thoroughly played a major part in the speed of which this project was completed. Overall Satisfaction: I couldn't be any happier with the final outcome.The only thing I kick myself for was for all the months wasted trying to find a company to do this project when I should have started with Five Star Fence. I have used 5 Star for 2 major fences and one side wall. They built a 70' fence in the front of my house, a 42' fence in my side yard and a 12' high wall on my property. They were excellent. All bids were accurate. No extra charges. They also came up with the best plan on how to fix my wall. Their bids were fair. They completed the work on time and all the work was excellent. So grateful I found Five Star Fence after 3 months of looking for a company to build a catio. I spoke and met with a few companies that specialized in catio's. One did everything by phone with photos of the property and the other came in person to the house and seemed uninterested and I believe he thought we asked to many questions. Just as I was about to give up, I decided to call fence companies and chose Five Star Fence after speaking with John Flores. He told me about the catio's the company had built and he had no problem answering my questions. I made an appointment to have him meet me at my clients house who rescues cats. I showed him what she wanted, we went over every detail from the redwood being used to the latch on the door...John was wonderful! We got on the schedule and work began a few weeks later as we agreed. John was there every morning with an incredible carpenter who to my surprise was very detailed. The roof, the sheet metal on the edges, the quality of the hardware and the frame around the wire mesh for aesthetics. The crew was amazing and went above and beyond on the details for the safety of the cats. The catio was purrfect in every way. My client was thrilled with the finished structure and so was I. I'm hard to please because I'm a general contractor so details are important to me when I'm doing a project. As easy as a catio looks, you have to build it right for it to last. I scheduled an appointment with these guys after seeing a supposed good review in the Neighbor 2 Neighbor booklet for some fence work on my 1/2 acre property in Tarzana. I spoke with Sergio earlier this week who scheduled an appointment to see me at 10am today. At 10:30 He still was not here so I called them to check on his arrival time. I spoke to a woman who said very casually... "well he isn't here and has been sick".... no apology, no offer to reschedule, nothing. No one from the company called me to cancel or to reschedule after I wasted all this time and on top of it I had to take half a day off work to meet with these people! It's completely unacceptable and they cost me a half days pay. Horrible and unprofessional service. If you can't make it you call, period. There are No excuses for bad service. read more

Buyer beware! They will give a good presentation, but don't believe it!! Almost 2 years ago they took out an old fence in the back yard and put in a new one. We had enormous problems throughout the project and several things had to be done again because of poor installation and sloppy staining. The person who was supposed to be supervising the build was rarely there. They ended up cutting into & damaging the trunk of our Oak tree. The staining on the fence was done wrong so it never fully dried. They almost started a fire in the yard leaving stain rags on the ground which started spontaneously burning. They also dripped stain on the stonework, not all of which came out. Once the project was finally finished we thought all was OK. A little over a year after the installation, several of the boards on the tongue and groove fence started buckling and coming loose. We called the company and were dismissively told by the owner that since it was over a year the warranty was no longer in effect. The reason boards have been coming out is because they used nails instead of screws! As a result we will have to reinstall ALL the fence boards because they are tongue and groove and have to be fit in with their neighboring planks. I have called them several times to complain and they won't even come look at it or repair it. This was very poor quality workmanship and they did NOT stand behind their work. They will know by reading this who we are because of the wedge cut out of the tree. We never had a full crew, and we were sent the least experienced members of their crew including one man who only works in the warehouse and another that they fired after the job because of incompetence. The reason they gave (after the fact) for sending over the crew they did was because the company was very busy. If they didn't feel they could send men to do the job properly they shouldn't have taken it on! So much more happened, but these are the broad strokes. We paid a lot of money and now we have to redo all the slats on the fence (over 100 feet long!) Avoid hiring this company!!! read more

I called and spoke with the president of the company, Yusheng Shew, and he said "sorry, I don't know what to tell you. you are out of the 1 year warrantee." I said that was fine, I was willing to pay for the repairs, but they needed to be fixed. He said "no, they are too busy with new jobs. this is how it goes. we will not come out just for a fix." (and just so you know, these are beyond handyman fixes, we've had our guy come out. and it's not just one gate. NONE OF THE GATES WORK.) so, I guess if you're willing to pay through the nose to have gates that only work for a year, these are your guys. but I implore you to go somewhere else. *I also said that I would be writing a bad review and he said "IN THIS COUNTRY THERE IS SO MUCH FAKE NEWS DO YOU REALLY THINK ANYONE WILL BELIEVE YOU?" Recently, we bought a house with a fence built by Five Star Fence in 2013. One of the gate posts wasn't properly installed and has shifted to the point that the primary gate is hard to use, the receiver has been completely knocked loose, and the siding has been pulled away from the house by the post. The rep blamed this on the harsh weather - "the freezing and the heat" (ha! we live in Mid Wilshire). They offered to fix it at full price so I countered at half of that on the principle that a fence should should last more than 2.5 years. They refused. I'm now on the market for someone to fix the fence post, the receiver AND fix the house siding that was damaged by the gate's initial faulty installation. read more

They completed the replacement of our property fence within a timely manner and always ensured we were informed of the project status. When it was planning to rain, they would email us first thing in the morning and advise they would not be there. They also ensured our property was protected throughout the project. When the old wood fence was taken down and they had not completed the install of the new vinyl fence. They would always put in place locked chain-link fence to ensure our safety and security. A couple of years ago Five Star Fence did an extension on top of our existing concrete block wall and a brand new section of wood fence, both of which turned out absolutely beautiful. We liked the quality of their work so much that we had them come and replace a very old picket fence around our huge front yard with a taller vinyl fence that provides more privacy. Requested a quote to replace my fence in the backyard on 10/25. It's on its last legs so I wanted to get it replaced before the winter comes. The company came on time and on schedule (10/30) and said to expect the quote by 11/1 which was to be sent by email. Since I didn't receive the quote by 11/2 I decided to email the company to make sure they had my correct email address. I didn't receive a response. Maybe the replacement of my fence wasn't a big enough job, who knows. Waste of time setting up an appointment and definitely not worth the hassle. read more

I hired Five Star to build a large chainlink fence and an ipe wood gate in our backyard. It was frustrating right away because they will not even give you an estimate of when the work will be done until you sign a contract. Fine, whatever, I signed and got onto the books and then went back and forth with Romuald about the design. Now, when you are dropping 8k for a gate from a reputable company, you expect it to be done right the first time right? Not with these guy! On the day that work commenced, Romuald did not even bother to show up and walk through the project or all the back and forth emails we discussed over the phone. The crew was almost entirely hispanic and communicated as best they could, but they did not have the relevant info to do the job right. Surprise surprise, the crew messed up and did not know I wanted a deadbolt and handle on the gate. They hung it too far apart. Romuald's response was that he's too busy too deal with it. Instead of fixing it flat out, they rigged it with another latch so it would actually lock when closed. The problem with that is the gate is constantly sagging and I have to keep adjusting the latch to make it fit closed. Also, the overall workmanship was pretty shoddy. The expensive ipe wood that I payed a premium for looked like bargain basement cuts and half of it was bowed. I literally had to take pictures of everything they "forgot" to do to finish out the project (such as cut and cap the huge gate posts). I mean come on. Anyway, I would never use them again, or recommend them. I gave them 2 stars only because the workers did work hard, and they came back to adjust the gate on one occasion after a couple months and paint some of the rust away (which was there after 4 months...). It's not the worker's faults. It's management. Romuald was either just a horrible project manager or too busy to do a good job. EDITED FOR RESPONSE TO OWNER Well, I had given them 2 stars out of respect for the workers, but after the blatant lies of Romuald's response I feel I have to change it to one star. Please see below if you want to count the falsehoods. This just further drives home the point of why you should not use this company. Romuald: "Yes I do remember that gentlemen, even if I never met him, I met with his wife. We did the job more than a year ago. Here is the copy of the original estimate as it was specified from the beginning that it was a latch, but as he wanted a deadbolt the day we started we put it in for him." Me: Absolutely untrue and I have the back and forth emails discussing the different types of deadbolts with Romuald to prove it. We had this discussion before I even signed the contract. Happy to share the emails. Romuald: "I will try to make the story short, I came for the estimate the next day he called, he got the quote I believe the same day and they were told 2-3 weeks lead time for install, they said no problem. Then I came back, as it is close to where I use to live, to get contract and deposit, still no problem. Then he started been difficult saying that he needed installation next day as he had a construction project starting in a few days. We moved the schedule to accommodate him," Me: Nope. Lies again. I started my correspondence with Five star on 6/6/16 with the express concern of installing the gate asap. They would not give me a date until I signed a contract. I did and they gave me a date of 7/6/16. I asked if it could be done sooner and it was moved to 6/20. Romuald: "I showed up to get the job started, right at the beginning around 10:00 am." Me: Lie. He did not show up on the day work began. If he had the gate would have been installed correctly with the required space for a deadbolt. He didn't show actually show up until the end of the project. Romuald: "I Came to see the wife and asked her if she had any question and then the deadbolt question came up. I even told them that it wasn't a good idea to put the gate before doing the new addition to the house as with trucks coming in and out it might affect foundation of the gate and make it sag." Me: Lie. He never discussed trucks "affecting the foundation of the gate". Not that I see why this should be an issue. It's a gate. You open it and cars drive through. He mentioned he was worried they might bang into it, which they did not. Romuald: "When the lock guy came to put the lock on, as I didn't want to be responsible for the lock install, I was there as well to make sure it works properly. We did everything that he asked us and when a small adjustment was needed we even came back to fix it." Me: This one is semi true. He came back after the project was a mess and did not take responsibility for properly fixing it. Instead of rehanging the gate closer together to work with a deadbolt, he made the locksmith ghetto rig the thing by screwing on a bunch of extra strike plates to the deadbolt. The "small adjustment" was the gate sagging so much that the latch wouldn't even close. read more

Now, only a year and a half later the gate sags so badly on one side that is does not even latch closed. I was quoted $600 to fix an almost brand new gate! DON'T HIRE Fivestar gates COMPANY if you need long lasting good quality gates! I had 3 gates installed by them after I got nice detailed proposal from Yushe the OWNER in 2018. There were had many issues while the installation was done- mainly poor workmanship on the gates finishes, gates not cut to the size, etc....took few different managers and workers to actually get the size and fit kind of right. The gates Were badly designed, make noise when they close, and have a flimsy latch to hold them open.... Then, less then 6 month later one of the gates didn't close- which they did fix, BUT 4 month later, again , same gate wouldn't close!!! When I called, got same answer like a previous reviewers from the new owner Yushe : U R out of the one year warranty and WE DON'T DO REPAIRS! So, if you can't get repairs from a company on a company's own product , I suggest to find a company who take pride in their workmanship and Stand behind what they sell you. After writing this review I received a call and email from the owner of the company asking how they could "make this right," and if I would amend my review if they did. I told them that they could return and properly complete the job that I had requested and contracted them to do. At that point I would be happy to adjust my review. They sent out the original estimator, Flavio, who went over the details and agreed to send a crew to fix the problems. There were a few times in our discussion when Flavio seemed to indicate that I was trying to "get"more than I had paid for, and I let him know that this attitude was offensive to me as I only wanted the job done properly. He apologized and agreed to fix all of the items with which I was unhappy. A few days later, a crew of very nice men came to my home and fixed the problems to my satisfaction. Where to begin? A neighbor had a gorgeous fence put up and I called Five Star, inspired to do my own. We wanted something basic and durable. What did we get? A month worth of poor customer service. Flavio came out to give us a quote. It seemed reasonable so we went ahead. The contract was emailed to us and needed to be faxed back with a signature. My husband sent the contract back via fax and I sent the 30% deposit back for the WHOLE JOB. When the field guys showed up the first time, they only completed half the job. I called the office and was told that we didn't sign both lines in the contract to ok the entire job. I said that I had paid the 30% deposit for the entire job. No one had called to check in with us. No one asked if we had somehow forgotten to sign the second line. They were happy to take the money though. In addition, Flavio never even asked if I wanted the fence stained. I did. The guys came out two weeks later to finish the job. I went about my business until they were packing up. When I went outside to admire their work... I laughed. Only half of the old, decrepit fence had been replaced with new wood. I talked to the builders and they admitted that it looked bad and had tried to convince Flavio that it also needed to be replaced. I demanded to speak with Flavio. He was called and refused to speak with me. Fucking crazy. The guy didn't even have the eggs to talk with me about this oversight. I asked him to replace the entire fence. Why would I want three feet of decrepit wood? When I gave the contract another look, I realized that it only listed five feet of fence. I admit, I should have taken a measuring tape out to make certain that the entire eight feet was replaced. Good news- The guys who actually do the work are incredibly helpful and kind. They gave me a 3pm to 5pm window and of course at 4:45pm I called to find out where they were. They said they would call me back when they found him. Now it is 5:30pm and no one has returned my call. I was a little hesitant to use a company with only one (poor) review on yelp. I am SO glad I took a chance on Five Star Fences and couldn't be happier with our finished custom craftsman redwood gate and picket fence around our property. It was a complicated design with many details, all of which were well executed and done to perfection. We have received so many compliments and it really changed the look of our house. I had six fencing contractors come to bid on our project. As a whole, they are a flaky frustrating bunch. I couldn't believe how unresponsive they were, as if they were too busy for my business. I suppose it is typical contractor irritation - no returned phone calls, weeks to send bids, late or no-shows for appts, and most disturbing, lots of questionable sales tactics and hidden costs. The one diamond in the bunch was Romuald, the oh-so-French owner of Five Star. He was from day one, professional, reliable and trustworthy. He followed up when others disappeared. He offered to come back to our house several times to get the design just right before signing a contract and starting a job. He worked with us on pricing to fit our budget. I figured if he ran his business professionally, the quality and workmanship would also be top notch. They were by no means the cheapest option, but I felt they would be the best choice for the job and could work within our tight deadline. I was so impressed with the precision of the workers. Our foreman, Armando, was fabulous! He kept the crew on task, was diplomatic when problems arose, communicated with me at every turn and handled all the complicated work himself. He is a true artist and a very nice man. He took pride in his work and it showed, taking his time to do the job right, even if it meant ordering new material or working late. I have been in need of a new fence for a while now and have been doing my research. I had a few quotes done so I could get an estimate of the cost to repair or to replace my existing fence. One side of my fenced backyard is falling down and I need to replace a gate, but I would like to get the whole fence replaced if I it fits my budget. I contacted Five Star Fence and was told they would send a representative out to give me a quote. When I was told the representative's name was Flavio I got a little nervous, as I had read the previous reviews. When Flavio came to my door he was very courteous and polite. I explained to him what needed to be done, but also what I might want done as well. I am working with a budget and needed options. Flavio asked many questions about the type of fence I wanted, if I wanted it painted or stained, and the type of wood I would like to use,...etc. After we surveyed the fence Flavio gave me some ideas that would enhance the look of the fence. I was sent a contract which had all of the options we had discussed. As I was looking over the contract, I noticed that Flavio was able to stay within budget and it was lower than the other companies I contacted. Five star fence is great. I found them on Yelp and needed a fence to be installed for a pool I was installing. They showed up for an estimate the same day I called and were able to start the next day. The estimate was very reasonable and the work was excellent. The crew was very nice and worked diligently until the project was finished. I was most impressed by their responsiveness. This was the work done: Removed old chain link fence, installed ~110' of 6' rod iron fence with a gate. Demolished pilasters and removed old drive way gate and installed a new 13' x 6' wrought iron gate. Cost ~ $ 5900. We had a very good experience with Romould and his guys. They were punctual and professional. The installation of the long fence in the back yard went very quickly. The installation of the driveway gate was a little more difficult for the guys because they had to drill down into the concrete of the driveway. They worked very hard in very hot weather (July in the valley) and in the end the gate looked really nice. The gate is very large and heavy and it is still straight and working perfectly nine months later. While the guys were working on the gate I changed my mind about which direction I wanted it to open and they were very nice about accommodating my request. I intend to use Five Star again if I need any more fence work in the future. read more
