My gag reflex is so bad, I start heaving once the dentist walks into the room. Shamefully, I once punched a dental hygienist in the leg while she was cleaning my teeth and accidentally let the motorized brush hit the top of my lip. I felt so bad that I sent her flowers the next day (oddly enough, she did not consent to taking her out to dinner). To quote the great philosopher Jerome P Seinfeld, 'I am an anti-dentite.' No matter how excruciating that dental visit is (yes, I do take anti-anxiety pills before going for my twice yearly checkup)... Dr Michael Spencer has made my experience slightly less awful. For that he deserves an award because I'm pretty sure most dentists around town charge my insurance company double for (as my attorney friends call it), pain and suffering caused from my mere presence. The girls in Dr Spencer's office, in addition to being smoking hot, are kinder than Mother Theresa when I walk in the door. They also hande my extreme dentalphobia with the upmost of professionalism and always crack jokes to make me (somewhat) at ease. When Dr Spencer walks into the room (I think he now knows to sneak in so I don't dry heave my way out the door) he will tell me what's about to happen and very patiently waits and pauses whenever I'm having a tough time in the chair (yes, panic attacks have occurred, see: punching hygienist). While no dentist experience will ever be great (that's like you volunteering to sleep in a tank of black widows), Riverside Dental has proven to be the most tolerable I have found... And I have left quite the trail of quivering hygienists in my path.

We were booked in for Monday. Our old dentist had been giving me a run around for months, and I wasn't able to get my son's dental records over the weekend. The ladies at the front desk were very understanding. They accommodated our needs to the best of their abilities, and made me and my child feel at ease. Dr Jasmine was so kind, but knowledgeable. I left there feeling comfortable that my son was in good hands, not just in the hands of someone chasing a paycheck. In fact, not only did it cost less than our old dental office, but she purposely split the work up into different sections to make my child more comfortable. I highly recommend!

Turns out, Carlson should have taken a less invasive, more cost effective procedure first. Most recently, I was told that one of my molars was cracked and needed a crown. When asked if there were any other options, I was flat out told no. So, I asked what my insurance was going to cover and was told 50% (which matched my policy). I asked what my out of pocket cost was going to be, so they gave me an "estimate of charges." Come to find out, they don't actually contact your insurance to get a real quote or to obtain approval. I was told that they give you an estimate based on your policy, or what they can pull from the web. Had they communicated with my insurance like I asked them to do, they would have been told it would not be covered. So, in short, they guessed. And I get to pay for it. I also found out that it's a legitimate practice to accept someone's insurance but bill them under a SHARED SERVICES carrier. This means, there is NO contracted rate and YOU have to pay the entire bill when they deny it. Seems to me, this is a very effective loop-hole for medical provides. How is that fair? And what's to stop any medical provider from pulling this on people?!? I had been going to Carlson for the last 5+ years, and previously had nothing but good things to say about them. Now, I'm left in disbelief that they would do this to people. I do not recommend them and would warn other patients to call on your benefits yourself. Clearly, they won't!
