went to this place thinking it was awesome after aching for a good burger! well should of went to IN n OUT for that.. The fries was horrible, no taste, full of oil. Hamburger was nothing to wait for. It was $23.00 for 2 hamburgers,1 fry,2 drinks. way to much money. I took one bite of fry and threw the rest away, 3 bites of hamburger!! My husband which likes pretty much anything threw his away. It cost us around $18 to feed 2 people for lunch. We had 2 burgers, 1 order of small Cajun fries, & 1 order of regular soda. The burgers are delicious, the fries were a little too salty. I think In n Out would have been a cheaper option. read more

Heard a lot of hype about this place, decided I'd check it out. Went in at 9:30, no other customers ordering so it wasn't even busy, meal still took 20 minutes. First off, they play terrible music like Nickelback at deafening volume, so if you wanted to eat inside you'd have to deal with that. I paid $11 for a burger and regular fries, the burger was OK, about as good as a Wendys burger. The fries were TERRIBLE! A fry should not be able to bend, it was just soggy and greasy, no crispy or crunch to it at all. So my awful, expensive meal took 20 minutes to cook with nobody else there, I'd hate to see it at a peak time. Food was overpriced and not good. Worth one visit but you won't want to come back. read more

Sat down to eat my $5.00 burger, missing the Jalapenos requested, eating $4.99 soggy cajun fries and skipped the drink. Not impressed, burger meat was bland, bun was soggy and sandwich basically fell apart. Only thing holding it was the aluminum foil. In-N-Out here I come. read more

This place was much anticipated by myself and my son. The burger was good and just a little better then In and Out, but nothing to really write home about. "Five Guys the best !"- Not! I first tried a "Five Guys" 2 years ago in Virginia. Everybody said, "They are the best" there too, but I was not impressed. Flash forward 2 years and I walk into the new Five Guys in San Marcos thinking maybe I was wrong last time. Nope! Still not impressed. First of all, the music was good but way too loud. Ordering was easy and the clerk was efficient, friendly and helpful. She even cautioned about ordering more than a "regular fries" for 2 people. She was right; plenty of fries and they were good. That was the highlight of the meal. The hamburgers are cooked one way; well done. You can get lots of toppings but that doesn't change the flavor or the texture of the meat. To top it off, they wrap all the food to go whether you eat in or take out. That steams the burger and makes the burger messier than it needs to be. The fountain drinks were misadjusted with too much syrup and not enough soda, but that can be fixed. Finally, 1 hamburger, 1 cheeseburger, 1 reg fries, and 2 drinks - $20 - I'll be going elsewhere and so should you! read more

its just OK, usually the freekin music is so loud that you have to yell at the people at your table. its Not a concert its a freekin place to eat. i just dont know what all the hype is all about. plus i think they took a page out of In-N-Out on the décor. I love Five Guys hamburgers. I prefer their French fries crispier. I am giving them 2 stars because they refuse to make their fries crispier. When we ordered we asked that they cook the fries longer so they will be crisper. We were told by the manager that they do not do this. I know this is untrue because I have had it done at this location, as well as others. After repeating several times that they have done this for us, the manager still refused to make the fries crispier. We decided to eat lunch somewhere else. Very cool place! I am a french fry freak and I love the fries here too! I have had both the burgers and the veggie burger and they are great. Now here is the real question...clearly they are going to be in competition with In n Out Burger...so which one is better?! I think In n Out is less greasy and feels a little more light and fresh (for eating cheeseburgers and fries haha), but I DOO like Five Guys' french fries cajun style! They grew on me and now this place is my favorite Burger joint. Sorry In N Out! It is pricey but never dissapointing. The staff at this location are always upbeat and friendly. Parking is easy and they get your order to you pretty fast unlike In-n-out. read more

So I had a great experience today! My burger was served just the way I ordered it and it was delicious! As soon as we walked out the door, an employee named Nikki came chasing after us because they forgot to give my friend her grilled jalapeños. Finally tried this location after going to to one in Point Loma several times. Place is smaller and seems to be noisier also. We ordered the regular burgers with 2 patties and asked for extra extra crispy fries, large for $5.00. My burger came with most of the dressings, and I ordered raw onions instead of grilled and the mushrooms on the side. This helped to make a drier bun and the burger seemed to old up better instead of turning soggy. The fries were very limp and soggy this time, one of the worst weve had anywhere. We just ate 1/2 and would have complained, but they were very busy and we wanted to get to our burgers. The meat had good fresh ground beef flavor, but not as good as In N Out. I think if 5 guys toasted their buns it would be much better. Would have gven this visit 3 or 4,stars except for the terrible fries. Hope they get their act together soon, tho they do get a good crowd. Two burgers, fries and 2 drinks was $21, so you can do much better at In N Out , just get the burger with extra meat, and their fries are always cooked to our liking ... for about 1/2 the cost!! read more

It's tough when a regional chain from somewhere else comes into your neighborhood, complete with all its fans from some other place, but you are dead set on your own favorite local flavor. East Coast folks rave about Five Guys. Californians rave about In-N-Out. Pacific Northwest folks rave about Burgerville. Texans rave about Whataburger... Fact is, I like all four of those. And I have favorites in each place. Five Guys is the least newbie-friendly of all of them. It reeks of a "if you're not part of the club, why are you here" mentality. A first-timer to Burgerville, or In-N-Out, or Whataburger is probably going to get about what they expect when they order. A first-timer to Five Guys is pretty much always going to feel like they were horrendously overcharged and they ordered wrong. They don't bother to tell you that any burger you order is automatically a double unless you ask to change it. They don't bother to tell you that their version of a "large fries" is over 1400 calories worth of fries (for reference a McDonald's large fries is only 500 calories!). So, after being in dozens of burger places, you ask for a cheeseburger, a large fries, and a drink, and you are understandably shocked when the tab is $15. It's a serious WTF moment for first-timers. And on my recent trip to the Five Guys in San Marcos, that is exactly what I saw. Guy in front of me with his teenage daughter ordered two bacon cheeseburgers, two large fries, and two drinks. And it was $30. He was a couple tables over when his food arrived, and he felt completely ripped off, and I don't blame him. What he wanted and what he got were two very different things. And over half his order went straight in the garbage. So if you haven't been, and you happen to read this review before going... think about how many fries you'd order at McDonald's and divide by 3, that's how many you need to order here. And if you have a 9 year old girl in your group, don't blindly order her a cheeseburger, make sure you specify a "single". Burgers are tasty. Fries are an acquired taste, but good. It takes about 12 minutes to get your order but that's because they actually make everything fresh. It's good. But don't expect a great experience on your first visit. It's more like a first beer, or a first cigarette, or a first heavy metal album. read more

My husband and I went yesterday. It was our first time eating at any Five Guys, but we'd of course heard the hype. He got a cheeseburger and cajun fries while i got the little cheeseburger and regular fries. The burgers were actually really good. The patty looked like something you'd make at home from actual meat instead of the processed, preshaped fast food patties. Unfortunately the burger was about the only thing good about the place. As others mentioned the prices are a little crazy. Even without drinks our order was $16. The restaurant is very small and not very well thought out. There wasn't anywhere to stand waiting for you food. You're either blocking the condiments, the door, or hovering by tables where people are eating. The third, and most unfortunate issue, is the fries. I thought they were pretty gross. They were extremely soggy and had a very dark, unappetizing look to them. I think the latter is from overused oil. My husband and I agreed that we would get the burgers again, but definitely to go so we go elsewhere for fries and drinks. Too bad Sonic isn't closer, a limeade chiller would be great with these. read more

I suggest ordering only a single burger, and carefully selecting what topping you want. For most people, this alone will be a meal. Especially if you ask for a lot of toppings, which are free. if you pay for cheese, make sure to ask for FREE EXTRA CHEESE. The fries are good, but maybe you should only order them if you intend to share them with somebody else or if you are super hungry. Ordering the double patty and a small fries is way too much food for even a big guy like me. read more

Great burgers and fries - someone mentioned soggy buns and, yes, I guess they kind of are (especially if you bring them home in a bag and they've been wrapped in foil the whole time) but I still think they're great. Big portions too - the fries come in a cup and there always seems to be a whole other cupfull of fries in the bottom of the bag even after the full cup is removed. Five guys in San Marcos has to be the worst managed resturant I've ever been too. They have terrible service the burgers are over priced and over rated. The manager there was cussing out some one for trying to put flyers on their counter. What is going on over there? I cant believe what a horrible experience I had. I don't complain much but when the manager is swearing at the people in the restaurant you got some issues. Don't eat at this five guys. They are rude and terribly managed. read more

The fries are fabulous but the burgers at "In-N-Out" are better. The reason I'm giving these "guys" such a low review is the tables are so close together. It's more crowded than an airplane. People sticking their butts in my face when I'm eating. One lady bumped a table and knocked over a guys drink and ruined his kids hamburger and fries. if there was a 2.5 option I would give it that. I have grown up on In n Out. where they season the meat, and the buns actually taste like bread. My old boss had raved about this place since he was from back eat originally. he would boast about how In n Out was okay, but 5 guys was the best. All I can say, is for the price, its meh. there is a reason they give you all those free toping choices, the burger itself is sub par. IMO continue past Las Posas and get off on San Marcos Blvd and hit up In n Out. read more

This place was awful!! yuk! my bf & I went here, waited forever in their hot ass dining room just to get our food and be so disappointed that we took it back! I got the little burger -which is bs, I was expecting an equal proportionate burger , but instead received a danky small pattie on an overwhelming bun w/ cold shrooms UNmelted cheese. There's no comparison to In&out that's for sure & it's where we headed after we got our refund, which was the best part of our trip to 5 guys. I was let down after hearing many good things about this joint. Don't bother. In&out is a socal phenomenon for a good reason. ps. caijun fries were seasoned salty & horribly. read more

5/17/15 First and last visit. To start with they got order wrong and did not offer to do anything about it . Burgers are no better than McDonald's just camouflaged in sauce that soaks into bun thus bad burger in soggy bun. Fries were acceptable. Food and service extremely overpriced. Really great burgers overall. The fries here are top notch too. The reason I give it 3 stars is that the prices are a little high for food like this. Not only that, but the fries are almost a waste of money because they give you way to much. Wish I could just buy a smaller amount of fries. Overall excellent tasting food though. read more

I don't see anything great about this place. Their PR machine makes it sound like they're heads and shoulders above the rest, but they aren't. I am sure you will see this chain have financial problems down the road: they've expanded too fast and don't live up to their own hype. To be fair, the fries are good, but you can find similar elsewhere. The burger wasn't anything special. It was good, but didn't have any qualities to it you would only find at Five Guys. The main problem, though, is their buns. They use a kind of bread that soaks up moisture like a sponge. I ordered it with everything and the juices overwhelmed the bun and it disintegrated on me. They should be using something that holds together better if they are going to put so many toppings on it. They don't even wrap it up tightly so you can hold everything in place, like many other burger speciality places do. I spent $10 for a small burger, small fries (which they overload on you) and a small drink. I spend that much on me AND my son at In 'n Out and enjoy their food, which has a unique quality to it, much, much more. Another thing I noticed, their cooks and staff don't seem to be too happy working there. Not going there again any time soon. read more
