Review Visit: September 9th, 2012 You almost need 5 guys to eat all the fries they give you with your order. That's no joke. You almost need to be awarded a medal if you can finish the fries that come with your order. Erin, Matt and I rolled up to Five Guys after spending the afternoon exploring parts of Peoria. None of us had been there before, so it was a new and interesting experience for us all. Upon entering, we were taken back by the large sacks of potatoes/french fries sitting on the floor. At first, you'd think this was poor inventory management but then you realize it's part of the decor of Five Guys. It reminded me of those places that have peanuts at the table that are complimentary and you toss the shells on the floor afterwards. Restaurants never cease to amaze me. We made our way up to the cashier to place an order after browsing the menu. As this was my first time here and I didn't think anything much about the big bags of potatoes/french fries on the ground, I went ahead and grabbed a burger combo. I don't remember what burger I got but it was probably something with bbq or bacon on it. Those are my favorite burger toppings (along with jalapenos). Everyone placed their orders and we grabbed a seat at one of the tables and made small talk until our orders were ready. I would classify Five Guys in the "fast casual" category. It's as quick as fast food but has the quality of a restaurant with a price that falls between those two things. I think my combo was near $10 but seeing as I paid for Erin's and mine, I spent around $20 there? That's a fair price in my book. The cashier or manager is the one that brought our orders out to us and we spent little time opening the bags and digging in. As soon as I peeked in to my bag, I was mildly confused. There were more french fries than what I ordered. After rooting around the bag, I was finally able to find my burger. I kid you not, by weight, there were more fries in my bag than burger. After extracting my burger, I made a comment that I must've been given the largest fry on the menu. Matt and Erin kind of smiled and said that they must've gotten the same thing as they had more than enough fries as well. The french fry surplus didn't slow us down from digging in to our main course, but we kept joking that the french fries alone couldn't been more than enough to fill us up. The burger itself was pretty good. I don't know if my appetite made it taste better than it actually was, but for what it was, I was happy. It didn't knock my socks off but it also didn't put 6 more pairs of socks on. The interior of Five Guys was nice but had that slightly greasy/fast food feeling to it. Everything you touched had a bit of oily/greasiness to it. The color scheme was white and red. It reminded me a bit of Steak N Shake with the tile being in their respective colors. The interior was on par for a fast food place but not nearly on the level of a restaurant. I guess that is to be expected from a "fast casual" place. As we finished off our burgers, we kept picking at the fries. I don't think any of us made a sizeable dent in our mountain of spud in front of us. I think I enjoyed the novelty of the french fries more than the meal itself. But, I am one who is easily amused. The food overall was great and just what we needed to recharge after exploring. Even after all these years, I am still surprised at how driving somewhere and spending the afternoon exploring a town can leave you famished. Generally I have a good experience at Five Guys but today was not one of them. I placed an order (2 burgers and fries) online at 11:30am for noon pick-up. I arrived at noon and my burgers were in a bag on top of the fries station. They then proceeded to put my order behind other people waiting for fries, who had placed their orders after me. Five Guys gives extra fries with your order of fries. Usually they put them in separate bags with the burgers the fries were ordered with. This time they put two fries in the same bag. So all the extra fries were eaten by one of the people who ordered them. I didn't get any extra fries. I really didn't like that, I was very disappointed. Also my sandwich was wrapped in torn foil. And the bun was soggy, specially all around outer parts. I had to eat all around the the outer edges. So basically the first 1/3 wasn't very good. We ordered online. We notified them as we were on the way. However, they didn't start working on our order until we arrived. That made the wait pretty long. Do you ever notice how everybody is actually happy to work there? I can't think of a time I've gone in there and somebody has been disgruntled because they had to work. I've had mostly good experiences with their food. Sometimes I will get a stale bun thing (which I don't eat anyway, because I have celiac) in my burger sometimes they might forget bacon but they always correct it. I typically do not eat in the store though. I can't stand the smell of the fryers. Other than that great service and I love it when they call out a jingle to pick up your food, which they don't do too much anymore. read more

There's nothing quite like draining your bank account for a hamburger. It's especially fun to do when the food isn't all that spectacular. I wanted to get a milkshake, but the bank denied my loan, so I had to go without. It's hard to justify the cost when Culver's, Steak n Shake, and Freddy's are all in close proximity. Popular burger spot in the hub of Guitar Center and Ross, quite busy the Sunday we trotted in with gift cards. Alas that charitable plastic is the only motivation I have anymore with the prices peaking through a big ten for the basic bacon cheeseburger. There are much better local spots like One World and Ulrich's serving quality beef between buns at better prices and more enticing atmosphere. Five Guys only has the locals with the free toppings which sure do sooth over a bit. I did a different go this time. My buddy did the classic but I wasn't that hungry and noticed the kosher hotdog. Always keen to try a new thing, I threw down all the proper options like mushrooms, hot sauce, onions, green peppers, and despite the basic beef nothing fancy big or rich got satisfied real happy with the fresh veggies. I quickly noticed even though they did well the ingredients were desperately held together by the cheapest Steak n Shake quality bun! The Cajun fries are the must add-on alongside the shakes. Of course the large fry overflows and half fills the bag on top my dog! We noticed we had to clean the table ourselves to sit at, very busy place with a good ten minutes wait for our food. All things considering I'm all about the local Peoria hotspots entirely more so than any chain in this city; I average doing Five Guys once a year which is sure keeping steady with this location doing a good job during the rush and better be getting the majority of that food price increase in their wages! Average 3.4 stars? That burger was delicious... fries were perfect. And the staff seemed really nice... maybe I been on a diet for a few weeks and don't know any better but that burger was the best I've had in weeks. Bacon single, lettuce, pickles, tomato, mustard. It's a bit pricy but it's made fresh. My stomach didn't get upset. And the fries were hot. Daughter enjoyed her chocolate shake. I don't usually tip fast food, but they did a good job so I left them something extra. Will be returning next cheat meal read more

Oh my God, what a disaster! There was so much wrong with my first visit to five guys that there will never be a second. Start off with the way too loud music, not quite drowned out by the scraping of heavy metal chairs on the floor. No wonder the people behind the counter have to shout at each other even though they're only a few feet apart. maybe that's why I didn't witness one of them smiled a single time in the 30 minutes I was there. I ordered a cheeseburger, medium fries, and a chocolate shake. There wasn't a mustard dispenser next to the soda machine so I asked about that and they said they would put mustard on the burger. They put too much on the burger. They served me a double cheeseburger, even though I ordered a single. not sure what that was about since there is no double cheeseburger on the menu. Their burgers are supposed to weigh 1/3 of a pound, so do those two burgers equal 1/3 of a pound? That seems unlikely. If not for the mustard on the burger, it would've tasted fine. However, it was extremely difficult to enjoy with the harsh music and the constant racket of grating chairs. I ordered medium fries. Apparently the cup that the fries come in can only hold enough for a small order. They put my burger in the bag, followed by a cup of fries, and then poured more fries on top of that. A strange way to serve fries. it doesn't matter whether you order to go or eat in. Everything goes in a bag. There is no platter, or plate of any sort to put your food on so you have to pour the fries out on a napkin to get to the burger. if you're looking for crispy fries, you won't find them at five guys. They serve mushy fries. At least they are sort of hot. There is only one size milkshake, which corresponds approximately to a medium shake elsewhere. I wanted a large milkshake. I'm a combat veteran with severe PTSD, and I almost never leave home. On this particular day, I was feeling hopeful and desire of having a great meal. Consequently, I ordered two shakes. One medium shake was not enough. And then I got the bill. Over $30 for a burger, fries, and two medium milkshakes. Does that make sense to you? I will go to five guys again. Not impressed on my first visit. Limited menu with nothing but burgers and fries. Went with a friend, who was hungry for a burger and I was planning on getting a side salad. Who doesn't carry a simple salad? Turns out Five Guys doesn't, so I ordered a regular soda. Now they got some ridiculous QR code that has to be scanned with your phone to select your soda choice from a pop up menu on your phone. They were sold out of every kind of diet soda and most of the regular sodas. We asked for a refund on the drink orders, but they had a hard time figuring out how to do it. My friend likes their burgers, so he'll probably be back. I'm usually very forgiving, but empty self-serve drink dispensers and the difficulty in using them is a total turn-off. Didn't care for the loud noise from the kitchen. This was a step down from Mac Donald's in ambiance. Not coming back. read more

This was our first visit ever to a Five Guys. I had a little cheeseburger with pickles, mustard and grilled onions and we shared an order of regular fries, which was plenty. The burger was good, but to me really tasted similar to a Burger King burger. The fries were pretty good. My wife, son and I went to 5 Guys tonight. I have been there once before when they first opened up. The quality has gone down. I was never that impressed to begin with. We usually go to a restaurant with all you can eat pasta on Mondays. We got to that restaurant later than usual and it was a 45 minute wait. So we decided to go to 5 guys. My son is an adult with autism so I suggested 5 Guys. I didn't want to have problems with him. It was the closest restaurant I could think of. It was 50 dollars for the 3 of us. The burger itself was almost 10 dollars. It was okay but it certainly wasn't spectacular. the fries were under seasoned and limp. I was not impressed at all. I wish I had suggested Culver's. For 50 dollars we would have gotten fries and drinks included and frozen custard. The burgers at Culver's is much better as well. Plus 5 Guys was playing the music really loud. So we couldn't really even talk. When I ordered I said 2 regular fries. I didn't check the receipt until I got to the table which was on me. The cashier charged me for a large fry as well as the 2 regular. I was annoyed at that. My wife and I agreed that we won't go back. The food is overrated and overpriced. I'm not giving it a lie rating because of the extra fry. I will claim responsibility for that. I gave it a 2 based solely on the price and quality of the food, as well as the loud music. I rarely go out for burgers. I can make a damn fine burger, exactly how I want it, at home, for much cheaper than you buy one anywhere that doesn't have a dollar menu. But I was curious, so we gave it a shot. The burger is definitely the high point. We ordered our little burgers "with everything" (which is obviously not everything). The toppings were flavorful, fresh, and ample... actually, so ample the burger itself pretty much got lost. You could put pretty much any patty on there, and no one would know the difference. The buns were pathetic - soft, floppy fast-food style buns that just can't stand up to a burger. If you're going to rave to me about your awesome burger, you need to serve it on an awesome bun. Not sure there's much point in commenting on the fries, since there are as many fry preferences out there as there are fry eaters, but I'm going to do it anyway! :) They were an atrocity. The fries themselves were okay, neither soggy nor crispy, but cut on the thick side, which I like. But after hearing several glowing reviews, my husband insisted on ordering the Cajun style, which I'm generally indifferent to, but he likes. This quote from him pretty much sums those fries up for me: "Man, if I don't like these fries, I can only imagine how much you hate them." They were showered in whatever "Cajun" seasoning salt they use and were borderline inedible. It's been a long time since I've been served something that grossly salty. I gave up and just munched on some peanuts, which is pretty impressive given my pathological inability to stop eating food that's in front of me. This place isn't bad. I don't know why people go here. The music is so loud that they messed up my order. It's $5 for a burger that is comparable to burgers at other chains. They put all the food in a bag whether it's eat-in or take out so you basically have to hope the table is clean because that is what you eat off of directly. They give you a bucket of fries. Just give me a normal amount of fries and charge me less. Why would someone stand in land for greasy fast food at restaurant prices when they could either just go to another fast food place and pay half as much or go to a real restaurant and get quality food and service? The place is clean and staffed with presentable looking white people. The customers are almost all white, and you just don't get a sleazy feeling their the way you do at the Taco Bell down the street. I had the little cheeseburger w/ the works and my date and I shared a large fries..you really don't need your own order--it's a huge serving. It would be in your best interest to share. Went here for lunch on a Saturday at noon and could not have been more impressed with the service. I walked in and was immediatly greeted by a smiling woman at the counter. I'd never been to Five Guys before, so I had a few questions which she happily answered. While waiting for my food, I noticed one employee sweeping the floor, while another was cleaning tables. I had zero issues finding a clean table to sit at. When I went to pick up my order, a gentleman handed me my food, smiling the whole time, and told me he hoped I enjoyed it. These little things are what you don't see at most burger joints anymore. I can't remember the last time (outside of the South) that I went to lunch and saw so many happy, smiling, friendly employees working hard to make sure you enjoyed your meal in a clean environment. This is how I would like to run a resturaunt if I owned one. Call me easy to please, but after going to place after place in the midwest with dirty tables and rude employees, this was a breath of fresh air. The food? Just as good as all the other five guys locations I have been to. Especially when you are craving a good American greasy burger. A regular burger (2 patties) is a good sized burger for one hungry person. Regular sized fries is just about enough fries for two people. Pricing seems high but consider how much a "taste-challenged" McD's meal cost nearly the same. I would rather eat here than McD's anyday. I do agree on the cajun fries, just stick to regular fries and your choice of topping. Katsup or try the Malt Vinegar (good). Oh and some of the review complaints I read through are just meh. If "insert here" place gets your order wrong multiple times then you need to ease off the special requests.....or learn to pick off what you do not want. Having heard this is the PLACE for burgers, I thought WHY NOT give it a try. Now I wish I hadn't. First of all, it's over $5 for JUST a hamburger. Even more if you want cheese on it. French fries -- a small -- $2.50. I guess it's about average compared to a lot of the sit down restaurants, BUT that's just it. It's really a take-out kind of place. Sure, it has several seats inside...but good luck getting one! Add a soda to your order and you're at $10 for ONE fast food meal. If I would have been able to TRY my burger, I may have better reviews. Unfortunately the restaurant screwed up not once...but TWICE on my order. I'm pretty sure it's not THAT hard to make an order correctly when on the ticket it says EXACTLY what the person wants. If it's NOT on the ticket, it does not go on the burger. After messing up on both of my burgers, I was done. I was too annoyed to get the problem corrected for a third time. Oh yah, I did try the french fries. Beware -- the CAJUN FRIES are VERY seasoned. A bit OVER-SEASONED for my taste since there were fries in the bag that were literally coated with the sprinkly stuff. **A couple days later I ended up trying the restaurant again...only because the manager gave my husband and I credits for free burgers. I love Five Guys.. This was my first trip to the Peoria location and I can see where some complaints come from. The workers were very flustered and seemed to mess up and miss at least two orders, delaying ours. My burger was great, it tasted exactly as I've come to expect considering I get the same thing every time. I'm not in love with their fries, but I do like that they carry multiple bottles of malt vinegar. As for the pricing, I think they charge competitively. I prefer to pay $4.50 here for a cheeseburger than getting any dollar menu gut bomb. We had three adults and two children eat for $25 which is good, even for fast food. I like that the buns are very plain. I hate burgers with a huge bun that takes away from all the goodness inside. I think this place is worth a try if you like burgers. read more
