The house-made giardiniera is great. P.S. I am going to make an exception to my policy and comment on another review (two stars): "Beef is weak barely put any beef on it compared to others. And the miced giardenera not a fan of. Do better Martinos." I guess my first thought was, "What is this correlation between poor grammar and ridiculous reviews?" It's definitely a thing.

There were a number of things on the menu - a variety of hot dogs, boba teas, and tornado potatoes. When I was there, several customers were enjoying a large bowl of shaved ice with toppings - that seemed to be popular. There are a few seats to hang around while snacking/eating. There is a large public parking lot just behind the shop up the hill, a conveniently located spot. I picked up a 3-pack of Mochiring doughuts, with the following flavors: mango; churro; brown sugar. The doughnuts were placed in a rectangular box which made it easy to carry home. Because it was hot, I ordered a fruit boba tea- mango with green tea and with mango-flavored popping boba. It was my first time to have the popping boba. The green tea plus the mango, which was recommend by the cashier/front counter attendant was really good. After trying the popping boba, it was fine, but I personally prefer the regular boba (I think it is a personal preference). I'd definitely get the green tea and mango combo again. The doughnuts were light and airy, and I like the fact they are small, sliightly smaller than bite-sized rounds. I'll come back another time to try the famous hot dogs - and I'd come again for the doughnuts, too. I recommend stopping by if you want to try something new.

It came with a small serving of Cole slaw, creamy style and very typical taste wise. The chocolate malt was very good, could actually taste the malt unlike other custard places offering a malted drink. The bill came to $14.48 including taxes. My wife and I stopped in for lunch while traveling from Milwaukee to Madison on a Wednesday afternoon and found the food to be good and frozen custard and service to be great. My wife and I really like frozen custard and have found the versions in the LA area to be not great (e.g. Shake Shack). Even the dependable versions from Culvers and Andy's around Chicagoland don't taste as good as it used to. So when traveling in Wisconsin in early September, I made it a point to try a place ranked high but one that we haven't tried before. Gilles fit the bill on both accounts. It started as an outdoor walk-up that was open seasonally, and gradually converted to a year-round indoor restaurant serving burgers and sides (one remnant are bathrooms connected from the outside). There was plenty of parking outside the restaurant, and seating inside. It was hot, so nobody was sitting outside (there were plenty of permanent metal seating). and we placed and paid for the order. I ended up going back and placing two more subsequent orders. Credit cards accepted. The ice cream came out quickly, with the food being called out a bit after by name, all given to you in to-go food containers. Regular 1/3 lb cheeseburger ($7 plain) for my wife. I got the Big Daddy (1/3 lb cheeseburger (ketchup, mayo, lettuce, onion, and tomato) for $7.65). It's a larger size (size of a Whopper), and mine had fresh vegetables which made it taste good...should have added pickles (didn't realize it didn't have it). The meat isn't great...had grill marks which might be fake since it wasn't cooked over an open flame...looked like a burger that was steamed. But the fresh toppings made it great for me. I also ordered chili fries ($5 plus $1 for cheese sauce plus $0.75 shredded cheese)...it was some of the best I've had. I like chili that is more tomatoey, which this was. The fries were crisp (at least at the beginning) and tasted great...definitely worth getting the cheese sauce and shredded cheese. I had forgotten to get cheese curds ($4.75 plus $1 for marinara sauce) initially; made up for it. These were great...served right from the deep frier, very stretchy and delicious. The daily flavor of the day was 'turtle', so got one scoop of that ($3.25). Such great value, and it was so creamy with the right amount of salty chopped pecans and caramel. Our initial plan was to share one scoop between us, but ended up needing another scoop so went up to order another. So, so good. One sour comment: the bathroom that is accessible from the outside has the typical foaming soap dispenser..but instead of sending it down to your hand, it sends the squirt horizontally...in my case, right onto my shirt. At least it was just soap.

BF had the traditional jumbo dog with everything and liked it. My cousin had her jumbo without relish or onions and was happy as a clam. Mom enjoyed her jumbo dog without the relish and also was pleased. I had the veggie version with no green yuck relish and fried onions and it was really good. Who knew I liked that flavor combo? Also, kudos for offering a veggie dog option. That's a smart business choice. I also had onion rings and while I usually prefer battered rings, the crunchiness of these was undeniably excellent, even delivered, even from a location not super near to me. Nice! My mom and cousin enjoyed their chocolate malt, and I applaud that they offer malts and not just shakes, but we only got one of the two we ordered. That was a shame. I was disappointed as I found it to be dry. It tasted like a leftover sandwich that was reheated. Very disappointing after all the great experiences I had in Chicagoland. My wife and daughter also felt the same way about the sandwiches they had. Portillo's you can definitely do better.
