Went into five eighth seams yesterday, and I know nothing about fabrics but had to pick up some for someone. They were so kind right off the bat, they helped me find the perfect fabric and helped me understand why it would be good for the project it was meant for. I got like 4yards for 55 dollars which I believe is reasonable but either way they were so helpful. Had so many pretty frantic and ribbon and other supplies. Had some for holidays which was fun. I got a yellow flower one. Parking lot was big and wasn't too busy. Thanks for helping a beginner! read more

After buying a Singer at a second hand store last year and not being able figure it out myself, I turned to the experts. Initially my daughter attempted to sign us up online but it would not processed. She called and Bonnie answered the line with some bad news - the class had one spot available. We decided to allow her to take the class as I took Home Ec and usually hand stitch things I need including face masks. A few minutes later, Bonnie called back and advised us that she'd confirmed with the instructor that she could safely add one more person! What customer service! We arrived at the quaint cottage on Sam Rittenberg that we passed several times before realizing what it was so it was and settled in for class. What a great refresher and the teacher was very patient and gave clear instructions. We look forward to taking Sewing 101! read more

While on a road trip, I was looking for stores that sell apparel fabric and came across Five Eighth Seams. It is a not a huge shop, but has a nice selection of quality fabrics and friendly service. I could've spent hours in there had I not had my husband in tow. I finally decided on some lovely soft cotton lawn and a fun printed knit, although there was far more fabric I would have loved to buy. They carry a bunch of indie patterns as well. I wish this shop existed where I live, because I would be there every week! read more

I went here today with my wife. I was the pack mule and wielder of the debit card. I can't say I know much about this stuff, but my wife was in heaven. They have a good selection of unique fabrics and other sewing type stuff. They also sell machines, teach classes, and have a club for kids. It seemed like the staff really care about the customer and were genuinely interested in what my wife will make with the products that she purchased. read more

Took the basics sewing class here with a group of girlfriends. We made a zipper pouch an it took us about 2 hours. They showed us how to work each person's machine and put up with our chattiness! :). The most important part was the ability to drink a glass a wine while doing so! I recommend this place for super adorable fabric and classes! We are all now taking the 101 class! read more

The fabric here is beautiful and the selection is decent. Not as much quilting fabric as there is knits and clothing fabric. The employees have been average at best. My biggest complaint is that my sons really wanted to do sewing camp and the only one with openings was a kids class making skirts. I asked if they could have another project to work on in the class and she told me "no, the classes are already set. And anyways, boys aren't interested in our classes." Hmm, I wonder why. Not a very inclusive place. Sad. read more

Classes are great and so is the fabric selection! They have more apparel fabrics than you can find in any other fabric store in the area. most fabric stores focus only on quilting but this store has a huge stock of knit and rayon fabric in addition to quilting cottons. The staff is always helpful in picking out which pattern to go out with which fabrics. Very knowledgeable staff. read more

Today I tried to visit this business but it has moved from the Ashley River Road address listed in YELP. Check their website for an up to date address. It wasn't too far away but the traffic was so bad, I couldn't make it to their new location. Sounds like a nice shop though. Took us over an hour and a half to drive 8 miles to this shop from the James Island Campground and return at 1:00 in the afternoon. Charleston traffic is intense! Trying out my new modern machine after 51 years on a "forward and reverse" basic machine, has been a challenge. Thank goodness I found Five Eighth Seams. After trying out a new embroidery hoop and getting nowhere, I called in with my questions. They encouraged me to bring my project in and they'd figure out what to do. I did and they did and I learned a lot in the process. What a great support for those of us at the start of a very steep learning curve.
