(Which I do love BTW) This store has one of the most intuitive layouts I've ever encountered in a bookstore, and the selection, wow! After making all of my selections, I spoke to the owner for a bit. He seems to have a passion for finding everything interesting and unique. What a nice guy! I tried to keep it reasonable and only bought four books, but I already have plans to go back, and I reached out to friends who are in the area to see if there's anything they need! Normally, I am an independent bookstore supporter and I do still buy the majority of my books from smaller independent booksellers. Unfortunately, I haven't found an independent bookstore in Nevada -- North or South -- that compares to the likes of Vroman's in Pasadena (if you have a recommendation, I am all ears). That said, if you are in the Reno area and want a brick and mortar bookstore with a huge selection, this is the place. And they do offer some decent discounts, so keep an eye out for the books that have been marked down. I was able to pick up a first edition of Patti Smith's new memoir at 50% off!

Even though our visit was fruitless (book-wise, not drink-wise), we still had a positive shopping experience.

They have new and used books as well within a reasonable price point. I found lots of great educational books from my preschooler. I even find coloring books and other things they are interested it. Grassroots Books is a very good used bookstore with a lot of variety of material-- children's books, DVD's, some records, gently used paperback and hardcover books. Hours are flexible for when they are open, however, they only buy books on Thursdays during the afternoon. I have never been tempted much to sell anything to them over the years, as they tend to be quite choosy with the material that they want and don't want. As a longtime book collector, this is important to maintaining a quality used stock and helps with inventory management. I highly recommend Grassroots for your next book adventure!

At first we thought it was closed because all of the lights were off. But the main door was unlocked and we entered. There was 3 people sitting at the table in the middle of the store - they stared us down but didn't say a word. We wondered the entire store which was primarily books, movies/dvds/VHS & furniture, with a few odds and ends. I think my definition of "gift store" is different than theirs because I didn't see much that I would categorize in that department. The odor in this store was the usual thrift store aroma, with a splash of...something very unpleasant. We saw what looked like a music venue in the back with a few guys talking really loudly from that area. After wondering the store, we started to work our way to the front when one of the gentleman practically ran to follow us out. When we looked back at him, he pulled out his key and dangled it indicating he was locking the door behind us, still not saying a single word to us. Out of probably 5 people in that store, not a single one said anything to us. If they were closed, they should have locked the door behind them - it was Saturday late morning.... I would label this more as a used book/music/movie store. I definitely won't waste my time here again. Such a weird experience!
