Food Hounds... Brimstone here with a bit of St. Louis cheer and tidbits for your ears! Right smack in the center of the famous Delmar Loop lies one of the coolest hot spots that we've hit up on our tour trail. Fitz's has been a STL staple since '47 and is the original and ONLY Root Beer Brewery in the area... for a reason. This place is unbelievably fantasmic - the root beer plant consists of the same machinery that has been used since its conception (which can be seen while dining in the restaurant), and they utilize only the BEST ingredients (TRUTH), including all natural cane sugar! If that wasn't cool enough - they are SO embedded in the area that they team up with various other mainstay establishments in the area to create unique flavors for them, partner up and keep it local. There are a few flavors that you MUST try when visiting, no iffs ands or buts! The PI Ginger Beer offered a light, crisp sip with a slight bite; while the Black Cherry was a refreshing, sweet and crisp taste that went down smooth and stayed that way! The Hip Hop Pop was the first drink made by Fitz's that had caffeine in it; mixed with a hint of raspberry and a little bite - it is a hit! Coffee lovers should definitely indulge on the Kaldi's Coffee Cola which is a cola blended with freshly brewed espresso coffee. Most importantly, try the Rootie Root Beer and taste a rainbow of flavors including herbs, spices, roots and that pure all natural cane... YUM! You could simply go to town on all the craft root beers, taste them all - they are bottomless mugs!
On to the food! Let's just say that I was totally stoked to be eating in not only an old fashioned root beer brewery; but in a setup like it was right out of the fifties - VERY cool. For those of you who may be wondering, the menu is 100% gluten free. We broke into a devilish display of meaty delights called the St. Louis BBQ Sampler Platter... Oh Damn! Here lies a heaping, beyond generous portion of an array of Applewood smoked meats including thick-cut chunks of turkey, hand-pulled pork and my Achilles heel - fall apart beef brisket; oh yeah... everything is doused with a scrumptious BBQ sauce made with Fitz's own root beer! I'm literally dying here... as I would truly like to be back devouring that succulent, superbly seasoned brisket right now. Every meat on the platter is smoked in house, has divine flavor behavior and when paired with the BOSS of sauce, is sweet, soft and tender. WIN! As they were originally known predominantly as a local roadhouse - they became famous for their burgers; so of course we needed to see what all the rave was about. Out comes the King of all Fitz's Burgers... the double decker burger, topped with that root beer BBQ sauce, American and cheddar cheeses, Applewood smoked bacon and GINORMOUS onion rings called the Loop Deluxe! These two huge 2 1/2 pound patties had SO much flavor that adding ketchup would have ruined the moment of unbridled passion.
We couldn't leave without tasting a pairing of sweet Floats! I couldn't get enough of the S'mores - their draft Cream Soda with mounds of rich, creamy chocolate ice cream - then overrun by Marshmallow Fluff, Hershey's chocolate sauce and graham crackers to create a dynamic blend of delicious! Lastly, the original Fitz's Root Beer Float was basic - vanilla ice cream floating bravely in the house draft root beer and topped with whipped cream... simple and perfect. I would certainly recommend making a stop at this fantastic location when in the area; it would be a crying shame to miss out on everything they have to offer! read more
