I knew what to expect because I had attended a gong bath many years ago. That experience had me falling asleep, experiencing synaesthesia, seeing explosions of light, color and sound, as well as feeling very peaceful and relaxed. This immersion was held in the yoga studio and was at capacity. You set down a mat, and other blankets, with feet in the direction of the gong. (This event had five sound healers and gongs). We started with some stretches and yoga. Then you lie down, palms up, legs uncrossed and listen. It's hard to describe the sound. It's deep, almost like a rumble, kinda like the cymbals, but more than just hearing, I also felt it in my pulse. With five gongs it's almost like a symphony with sounds and vibrations building on top of each other but you don't just hear it coming from the direction of your feet, it seems to be coming from every direction, immersing you in vibration. At this point I went in and out of sleep and certain sounds made my limbs twitch. One certain sound seemed to jolt me awake and I saw yellow or green pops of color (my eyes were closed). After that, I started to get restless and could not stay still and needed to stretch. I think at that point I had enough and it was maybe 10 minutes more (the total gong portion was 75 min?). I felt very tired (perhaps extremely relaxed?) and calm, my eyes were tearing (???), and we then had a short deep breathing and meditation. The gong practitioners were lovely, beautiful souls who promoted peace and healing. I felt at peace and in a more refreshed state of mind than when I started. I would attend another of these events but next time I would bring more blankets.

I love my Northbrook vasa! Anyu, Brian and Aaron are all so fun and engaging. Especially Anyu. I am…read moregreeted with smiles every time I walk in, but Anyu has really paid attention to my health issues and has follow up questions and suggestions every time. She has been a breath of fresh air to the whole team- they are all noticeably more friendly and pumped to be there- I don't take a ton of classes but got in with one of Aaron's today and it was so fun... I was intimidated to try to sauna and steam room for the first couple of months because it's coed, but it's really no big deal. I DO wish they had actual tanning booths like the site claims- not just red light therapy. These are different types of machines and I do feel that was misleading. And on the site it does say there are pools and hot tubs but my location does not have either which is a bummer. The locker rooms are almost always spotless and the showers are nice and large, though water pressure is lacking. I just scheduled my pt appt and I look forward to that session! There is great turf space for functional strength training and there are always enough weights to go around if you just look- I love the inferred yoga classes too! I've taken a couple of the dance classes and a bunch of the studio red HIIT classes and will continue to... All in all, this gym is absolutely amazing-- if it had a hybrid uv/red light therapy tanning booth I'd be so thrilled!

Overall, it has everything you want to work out. My only issue is how busy it is…read more I probably waited 10 min out of my workout for a machine.

My friend invited me to brunch at Midtown Athletic Club (they are a member). The public can't just…read morewalk in, there are gates in the lobby and I had to scan a code (and fill out my info) before entering. I visited Midtown before as a prospective member so I know that guests can only enter a limited number of times. We went upstairs past the cardio machines (they are plentiful) and the weight area to the cafe. There are tables and booths that overlook the outdoor pool area (closed for season). It wasn't a large brunch but we had some made-to-order omelets, bacon/sausage and fruit. There was also some potatoes and pastry. When I sat down to eat I received a text from Midtown about a membership. The brunch was bottomless although one omelet was enough for me. I also had two emails from Midtown when I got home, one a waiver of liability and the other a membership offer. I didn't join as a member on my previous visit and I am not going to join now. I already have a Pilates membership that includes three studios with classes from 6am-8pm. Midtown has a Pilates studio but none of the class times work for me. They also have some reformers in the middle of the cardio area reserved for private lessons. If I have a private lesson I would prefer to be in a secluded area, not in the middle for all to see. The facility has many machines, a boxing area, a cycling studio, a theatre, a spa, a cafe, courts, pool, etc and this is a great place for those who need this. There are families who spend the morning at lessons, classes, workouts, then join up in the cafe. This is great for those who are looking for this but it doesn't fit my needs right now.
