This pocket park is adorable. I discovered it between two buildings during the Caladium Festival…read more The park was created and maintained by the respected Rotary organization. Rotary was started by Paul Harris, a Chicago attorney who formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on February 23, 1905 so professionals with different backgrounds could exchange ideas and form lifelong friendships. Through the years Rotary expanded to include humanitarian missions. Today Rotary International is a network of 1.4 million people who work together to promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, save mothers and children, support education, grow local economies, and protect the environment. The Lake Placid Rotary was chartered in 1986. They are one of six Rotary Clubs in Highland County. Every year their top fundraiser is a Wild Game dinner held in December. The Noon Rotary provides dictionaries to local fourth graders, raises money for scholarships and supports nonprofit organizations like the Miracle League of Highlands County, which holds sports events for special needs kids in Lake Placid. The Rotary Park was created in 2002 and 20 years later the club spent several months renovating and improving the park. One of the sweet touches they added was a dragon reading a book. A green dragon is the mascot for Lake Placid Elementary School. They also planted new donated caladium plants, added a new irrigation system, and they rebuilt a small bridge over the park's pond. The Rotary Park is a charming place to sit and rest in the downtown area but it is also a symbol of all the good that the do for the community.

This gym is located in Salt Mills Plaza above Big Al's. There is a parking lot as well as street…read moreparking. It is not very large so if it gets crowded it could be a problem. There is only 1 squat rack and 1 bench (see photos). Like most places in Turks prices are high. For example a day pass is $30. For a week pass it is $80 per person. Our hotel gym had no real leg equipment so we went there to do squats and other leg exercises. They had hamstrings, leg extensions, leg press machine, calf machine, and hip thrusters. I am not sure if you are allowed to do cleans there. The floor is somewhat padded so dead lifts would work. No lower back machine/bench. Overall expensive but everything you need to get a good workout unless it gets crowded. They do have personal training as well but we did not look into that but it is listed on the website. They have a bathroom with 1-2 showers in it and a few lockers.

The park also contains a clubhouse that can be rented for private events. The swimming area is open between Memorial Day and Labor Day. This is the second lake beach I have found in the Sebring area. I have always heard that if you swim in lakes in Florida you can get the brain eating Naegleria fowleri amoeba. When water gets up your nose it travels to your brain which is almost always fatal. There have been 37 reported cases in Florida since 1962. Peak times to get it are July through September. I am not sure if they test the water here or if you are supposed to know about it and only wade. Also it seems like a possibility that there are alligators in this lake. The water looked inviting but I think I would stick to the boardwalk.

Its in the middle of nowhere, but what keeps me coming back is the service. The owner works hard to make the customers happy. Ive seen him comp a round when people were unhappy. Hes offered me a free bucket of balls b4 my round, Sometimes you'll get a free drink. The starters are always cool and more than helpful to assist you , get you a different cart, let you play the round ur hoping for. Prices are more than reasonable here. For that I will give 5 stars. The service and personability shown to the customer is why it's 5 stars here.

I've retired here for five years now but visited many times for decades before that as my parents retired here. It's safe to say I know the city very well. It's a teeny tiny place with a population of around 10-12,000. It's in agricultural Highlands County so it's off the beaten track. If you stick a thumbtack in the middle of the state, you might hit my condo! Orlando is 70 miles North and Tampa is 75 miles West. Head East 80 miles to Vero Beach. I live in a beautiful condo on a lake with exceptionally low taxes and extremely low cost of living. There really isn't a rush hour here. The medical community caters to retirees and I'm fine with that. Do I have 1000 restaurants like Orlando? Nope but I have enough to get by. I have all the retail I need with two Publix within striking distance. Amazon ships most of my stuff in one day! On any given day I could stop off at my Cheers bar, you know the one where everyone knows your name, and then grab some authentic Mexican food from any one of a dozen places. It doesn't get much better than that!
