We recently vacationed in Fishtail for four days, from August 1 to August 5, 2026, and we found the local General Store to be amazing. We purchased some delicious ribeye steaks to barbecue, as well as some homemade apple pie. The following day, we also picked up a couple of sandwiches from their deli. We made sure not to leave empty-handed; we bought several souvenirs to send back to our kids in California. While traveling east from Idaho and on the way to Butte, Montana, my son and I stopped off at this awesome Old West trading store. A little bit off the beaten path, but well worth it, Fishtail General Store is authentically a real General Store. They have everything here: food & drink, cool T-shirts, camping, hunting, & fishing gear, hand-crafted toys, & locally-made candles and soap. I was so happy to find some real heart-shaped boxes adorned with flowers. They were beautiful and I bought both of them. The grocery selection is pretty good for a store right off the freeway. The website says Fishtail General offers "an old meat market section of the store with a world famous "Fishtail General Store Special Sausage". This is a delicacy treasured by regular customers. The full line of grocery items includes fresh baked bread, pies, cinnamon rolls, pizza, deli sandwiches made to order, and other goodies. I can attest to their wonderful deli sandwiches which my boy and I gobbled up. Perhaps it's that all the fresh mountain air makes a coastal tourist hungry? The store offers hand-dipped ice cream cones. Those under the age of 9 can get a cone for only 10 cents. Located in south-central Montana in the foothills of the northern Rocky Mountains, Fishtail is smack in the middle of the finest hunting, trout fishing, skiing and eye-popping scenery on the planet. I was astonished, as we were driving into Montana, to look up on a ridge and see a juvenile brown bear-in May! Usually the bears are still hibernating so this was quite an unusual sight. I remember thinking how shiny and glossy the bear's fur was in the sunlight and that this was a very good omen. In the back of the store, there is a huge wooden table with benches, where visitors can "sit and rest for a spell." Oh, don't forget to find a spot on the table to carve your autograph! Out here in the Wild West, that is not considered graffiti or defacing a public area, it is WELCOMED! I came here 6 years ago with my best friend and it was such a wonderful experience. My husband and I were in Montana this weekend coming from Boise, Idaho and I wanted to show him what a fun place this was. We drove up and it was well worth it! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. If you are anywhere near Fishtail, Montana I highly recommend visiting the fine people at Fishtail General Store. This is the best small town grocery store I've ever been in, and I've been in quite a few in my travels. Katy and her employees are super people. They are the most thoughtful and helpful people you will ever encounter. Their smiling faces and cheerful attitudes will make you feel welcomed. The store is fully stocked with groceries; it has gas, hardware, camping, hiking, hunting supplies, and much more. It has a wonderful deli. The sandwiches are made to order and there are baked goods as well. There is a huge wooden table with benches in the back with plenty of room to sit down and eat. You can even carve your autograph on the table. I just can't say enough good about this clean, well-kept store. read more
