My girlfriend and I visited FishBones for the first time last night to celebrate our Valentine's Day since we won't be able to this weekend. First and foremost let me say that the service was great. Our waiter was very friendly and memorable, and several managers came by to welcome us. We were given a free amuse-bouche of tuna tartare on nori chips, which was fresh and tasty.
Now on to the things that weren't so great:
My girlfriend ordered a sushi roll for her appetizer, the price was pretty high for only a 6 piece roll. While the roll was very good, the amount of fish in it was minuscule for the price.
I ordered the fried calamari as an appetizer. The portion size was again pretty small for the price. The calamari itself was pretty standard, no better than you'd get at any Italian restaurant. The marinara sauce was ice-cold, which was a little off-putting.
Next came our salads. My girlfriend ordered the wedge salad and I ordered the Caesar, but we were brought two wedge salads, I didn't say anything though because it looked really good, and it was. The salads were pretty large as well, but the cost was a little extra.
The bread was alright, basically tasted like a school cafeteria roll with crispy melted cheese on top and olive oil with herbs and spices. Not necessarily a bad thing because I used to love school cafeteria rolls.
For my entree I ordered the Filet Mignon Two Ways, a filet in beurre blanc sauce with 3 grilled scallops. As a side I had ordered the potato wedges, but when my plate came it had mashed potatoes on it. Again I didn't say anything because they were quite good. The waiter did notice that they had given me the wrong side though and brought out the potato wedges as well which we were not charged for, and they were great.
I ordered my steak medium-rare, but it came out very very rare. Again I didn't say anything because I don't mind eating a good quality piece of beef rare or even raw, but I did have a little trouble finishing the most under cooked part of it. There is a fine line between seared and charred and the outside of the steak definitely crossed the line and had a noticeable burnt flavor. The scallops were ever so slightly overcooked, but they were delicious, the best part of the meal.
My girlfriend ordered the stuffed grouper with green beans and orzo salad but the plate came out with mixed vegetables and orzo salad instead. Yet again, we didn't say anything. She liked her fish and the stuffing, for some reason she didn't like the orzo salad but I thought it was pretty good. The fish itself didn't have quite as firm of a texture as good grouper I've had in the past, but it was fine.
We got dessert to go, I had the cheesecake, she had the key lime pie. When we opened them later we were surprised by how much smaller the pieces were than what we were shown on the dessert tray. The cheesecake was still decent for the price, but the key lime pie, while very good, wasn't worth it.
All in all, the food was good, not great. Definitely very overpriced. Service and decor were excellent though, if you don't count the mistakes with our orders. read more
