As I have mentioned in a number of reviews for local places, the outer NW suburbs of Boston really lack quality places for higher end dining - not that I expect every place to be a Le Bec Fin (a Philly reference for those from New England, http://www.yelp.com/biz/le-bec-fin-philadelphia :-), but something above a pizza joint with creative culinary treats is what would be perfect.
Fishbones definitely hits that mark for its food and, especially, the fresh seafood.
I've been there for an adult night out and a family dinner and it works well in both respects. The variety of entrees and seafood gives Fishbones its edge over other places and the fact that they have a fish market in the restaurant gives you confidence that the fish were likely swimming just a couple of days before. Each time we have gone, I have tried a different dish and have never been disappointed. I would actually give the oysters 5-stars plus rating and my only complaint is that they sometimes run out of the type that I am in the mood for that night; however, the fact that they go through their supply (and also don't have things on the menu unless they can get them) guarantees you things are fresh.
The ambiance of the restaurant itself is perfect (my wife likes the color of the main bar room and wants to figure out where to use it in our house), even if a bit crowded at times. Definitely call ahead to save a spot (no reservations - you need to be there, but at least you get on the list) and be prepared to sit anywhere you can find a spot - the drinks from the bar will make the time go much quicker.
Speaking of the bar, one thing that I love is the beer selection and the fact that they have my absolute favorite Belgium monastic beer, Westmalle. Sure, there are places around that serve up other abbey brews, like Chimey and Duvel, which are excellent in their own right, but this is the first place in the states that I have found to carry this label - usually I am relegated to waiting until a trip to Brussels to enjoy - no longer.
With regard to the wait staff, I read the reviews before first coming over and would agree that they sometimes are not the quickest, but I have found that all you have to do is to speak up and they will get what you need from your next drink to the check. In fact, one evening, my wife tried a drink from their extensive list of martinis and unfortunately it tasted like cherry cough syrup - not that it was bad, others might like it - but, definitely something that she would not enjoy. The waitress noticed and asked what was wrong and, hearing the description of the taste, went and got another drink - and did not charge for the cough syrup one - that's very decent service in my book. On another occasion, I had my extended family visiting, which was nine folks at the table representing about nine decades in age and the waitress serving us took everything in stride - and with some funny wit to boot. She earned a nice thank you from me on the tip for letting me take everyone out for a good time.
All in all, I do plan on being at Fishbones again soon - especially over the winter when chowder and oysters are necessary to deal with those cold days coming. read more
