Okay, let me just say up front, this is really a 2 1/2 star review. I can't in good conscience give Fishbones two stars, but I will never eat there again.
The pros - To begin, the entrees are great. The boyfriend had the blackened swordfish with apples. It was the best swordfish I've ever tasted. Cooked pefectly...moist, flavorful, delicious. I chose the grilled trout. It was high quality, tasty, flaky and well seasoned. Sides were rice pilaf (buttery, but not heavy), baked potato and the wonderful asian-style green beans. The portions and quality were excellent and the prices were fair. The wine/drink menu is quite excellent, especially given the location. Once you are seated, the waitstaff is adequately attentive. Off-street parking is free and abundant. All good things. So, four stars.
The cons - OM-frickin'-G, the wait! The first time we went, we were told "one hour, plus." Wisely, we went to Bertucci's. This time, we called ahead (at 6:30) and were told, again, one hour. Since we live ten minutes away, we popped down at around 7:00. We were not seated until 8:15. To make matters worse, a couple breezed in, waved at the host (who was apparently a personal friend, he came by their table to BS w/ them) and were seated immediately. They were finishing their meal by the time we were seated.
The salad and dessert left something to be desired. We split the bacon-wrapped scallop salad. The scallops (and bacon) were excellent, perfect even. The salad dressing was delicious. However, I noticed the greens were a little slimy. This will be important later.
For dessert, we had the pear tart, a la mode. The filling and ice cream were incredible, the right balance of tart and creamy. Unfortunately, this was spoiled by the slightly stale, rancid butter flavor of the crust.
This will sound picky, but the dining area is way too loud. You can't have a conversation w/o screaming. Also, there is a strong "fishy" smell, due to the market.
Here is why I will not return - On our way home, both the guy & I felt some gurgling in our bellies. By the time we got home, we were both frankly sick, and remained so for the rest of the night. I blame the slimy mesclun leaves, as we ate equal portions of the salad. I am a delicate flower, but he possesses a cast-iron stomach, so something had to be "off" for both of us to get identically sick within 20 minutes of leaving. So sad... thus, two stars.
