We are working our way through the Florida Distillery Trail and it's great because we are hitting up distilleries we might not have known about! I skipped the white rum and went right into the spiced and dark rums- good gracious. The flavors! The dark rum actually tasted more like a good bourbon! Something I have found with some well made dark rums. Same notes, same mouth feel. The bourbon was also delicious and they make a single malt whiskey (Scotch Whiskey without it being called that) and it was seriously hard to pick a favorite! We snagged a bottle of the spiced rum and I convinced John to go with his gut and grab the single malt. He was leaning bourbon, because I lean bourbon- but the single malt would be something a little different on our bar. I would 100% buy these spirits again and I believe Paul said they are carried in ABC liquor stores- so maybe I won't have to drive to Ocala to get it! Yay. Happy stop on the trail!

It was amazing... we still talk about it today. Creamy, dreamy, sour/sweet, strawberry goodness. It was a ten out of ten. I had this creative and fun cocktail made with Hawaiian Punch foam. I was worried it'd be overly sweet, but decided to go for it. So glad I did - super balanced and just perfect! My only complaint was that we were pressed for time and only had time for one round. He had never seen the Florida Distillery trail passports and I think he was immediately impressed and realized we would know what we liked. The sip of the still not only was warm from the still, but had this warm mouth feel that stayed with you- like your mouth got the best hug! That's my best shot at describing it, because I'll probably never get to do that again. It was so good I declined the straight moonshine that was bottled- the distiller said it would be harsher compared to the sip we tried. Nope, let me sit in this warm hug longer. lol. Blueberry moonshine was up next and is their top seller- for good reason, the blueberry fields are right out the back door and you can go pick em yourself! Farm fresh shine right here! We bought the blueberry- it was that good. I also loved the cranberry moonshine and imagined it in my homemade hot apple cider for the holidays. The rum also wowed us- so much so, we bought that bottle too. A hint of sweet- they use white and dark sugars and it's a wonderful blend. The lineup also included a brandy, watermelon moonshine, apple moonshine, peach moonshine and southern pecan moonshine. I skipped the apple smack and souther pecan- because that's not my taste, but John enjoyed all of them! They also have quite the little store there and on Saturdays they have live music and food trucks! I'm sure, a great party! This one wasn't too far from my daughter's house and I am thinking- we need to get them there to try them out too! We were greeted by lots of people and the ones that really stuck out were Lexi, Keeley and Janel they were so welcoming and sweet! Jessica hosted our tasting and was so fun and funny which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. El was our last tasting for the whiskey tasting and she was knowledgeable and able to answer all of our questions while being so sweet. Definitely a stop we have to make each time we are here in st augustine!!

Each time we've visited we have had wonderful experiences. Everyone is always a joy to interact with. Lexi had a large group during our first visit and then just the two of us the second time. Both times we walked out with our favorite spirits and some new ones. The peanut butter whiskey is always a staple and this one is my favorite. We now have a new addition to our must-have collection, mango datil whiskey. I dont even mix these with anything as they are incredibly smooth. Can you? Sure. But why? The spirits also change out and I'm a little sad that the cookie dough whiskey will become seasonal (that one did mix well with the peanut butter and caramel). But the new key lime pie rum was delicious and the coconut rum is another favorite. Was there anything we didn't like? I am not a fan of the roasted pecan whiskey but I can appreciate why others will enjoy it. In our tasting, Lexi swapped that one out for me so I didn't miss out. The care and joy the team has is palpable and a must stop when visiting the St Augustine area. Big fan and we now stop by multiple times each visit to sample and take home our favorites. Im excited to try the new rye whiskey on a future visit. One thing to keep in mind is that the tasting used to be free and now costs $5. Personally, I don't mind since there is a $5 coupon to use in the store that can be stacked so it becomes essentially free but it's a relatively recent change (the same applies to the nearby St Augustine Distillery and San Sebastian Winery). Do I wish that this one was still free? Of course. Will it stop me from visiting? Nope. It just breaks up my purchases so I can apply the cost each time. (And it's much better than the winery which gives you a plastic cup...nice but not really repeatable.) Overall, City Gate continues to be my favorite Distillery for flavored spirits. We had a few more samples and then I spied their seasonal frozen drink. It's a spiked "hot" cocoa! That frozen drink was so good. You could not detect the vodka in it but I'm sure it would kick in. I just had a sip of my husband's. So good. The store is super cute. They were busy decorating the place with Christmas stuff- even though Christmas is literally around the corner! Haha.
