First let me say I love pet shops, especially small, privately owned specialty shops like this one. I spent my high school years working in a pet shop then went on the work in the wholesale pet industry as a representative and factory rep. I spent 11 years in the pet industry before I moved on the far less entertaining industries. The staff here is super knowledgeable and (I can't say this with enough enthusiasm in a review) amazingly friendly. I had two separate employees approach me and ask what they could help me with with a smile on their face. So refreshing! It's a small place packed with a huge variety of fresh water and marine fish and supplies. All the aquariums are clean and the fish are healthy and well taken care of. They have a great selection as well. The employees love working there. The girl who helped me was 41 and has been working there since high school! Talk about dedication and a wealth of knowledge and experience. Wow. The fact that she's worked retail that long and still has the level of contagious enthusiasm is something you rarely encounter and is a testament to the type of business the owners run. I made my purchases and told her I wouldn't be home for 24 hours and she took great care to pack my fish and plants for the journey back to Northern Michigan the following day. Everything survived and is looking great in my aquarium. The fish are healthy, employees are super friendly and knowledgeable and the prices were great, just like they claimed. Gave me a goldfish with visible ich. I took it back inside to ask for them to look at it again. They looked for one second and said that's not ich. Took it to Petco, they saw the ich, and took it to treat with other sick fish. read more

Be extremely cautious when dealing with this business. Customer service is great and the employees are very nice, however the owner Tom will take advantage of any opporunity to make a profit. I did business with them for 7-8 months supplying copepods to sell on consignment. Today when I went to collect payment for the $150 in products that were sold, I was ment with skepticism. Tom requested I show a paper trail for the products I had brought in. I producted the sheet with employee signatures verifying I had indeed delivered products. At this point, Tom took my sales sheet and told me to leave the store. He said that I had no proof that he owed me money. $100 is not worth going to small claims court over. I am now out on the products he sold and the money he owed me. He took advantage, stole and abused his position as a business owner. I would advise anyone interested in doing business here to avoid the store. If he was willing to take advantage of my kindess and effort, he will surely do the same to you. read more

I have been dropping in since 1993 and i have had nothing but great experiences there. I live a ways away but is worth the ride. They have anything freshwater and alot of saltwater. I only gave 4 stars because of ethics. I am used to stores that won't sell fish unless they are sure you have a proper tank set up. Stores that count on customers that are willing to wait to make sure their fish will not suffer and die. This store told me things I knew I shouldn't do but might work. Like way smaller tank size for certain fish that I know need much larger tanks. I just felt like if I asked about a certain fish they would find some way to sell it to me, unless it was something completely ridiculous like a medium sized emperor angel in a nano or something like that. That being said their fish are greatly priced, they have an amazing selection of clown pairs. I like their coral selection, and cured live rock. If you are starting a salt tank this is the place to go, just make sure you do your research and know what you want before you go. All in all it is a great store, and it is a business. And I will say they have warnings written on their tanks not to add their water to your home aquarium. All fish and corals they have sold me are thriving. read more

There are no other aquarium stores nearby so this has become my go to fish store. They're not perfect but certainly friendly and welcoming and can explain so much to you. Their showroom is breathtaking and totally worth checking out. They have dry goods and live fish and invertebrates of all kind and will make special orders for anything you need. LOVE this store! They have a great selection of products and fish to look at and choose from, I really enjoy watching the bigger fishes have their "feeding" time in the store. The staff here are friendly and very experienced, managers seem to know TONS about fish and answer all your questions. The fish all look great and the tanks are well kept, prices are pretty much on par with other places. They have a nice selection of water plants as well. Since our initial visit in December of last year, our first 20g tank has been a success and fish keeping has been a great experience thanks to Fish Doctors. Our daughter loves making the trip when ever we need anything at the store. The staff has always been friendly and knowledgeable. We decided to take the next step and upgrade to a 30g tank. A young man named Noah helped me through the whole process. I have been a pet supply retail manager for 6 years (dog & cat), and I can tell you I wish Noah worked at my store. He was enthusiastic and was almost excited as I was to start this new tank. Of course Fish Doctors had everything I needed in stock. The tank, stand, filter, LED and more all at a good price. My favorite shop in Michigan. They know their stuff and won't steer you wrong. They must treat their employees fairly well too as I have seen many of them for years. I like to slowly tinker with my reef tank and never feel pressured to buy random stuff or livestock I don't need or can't handle. They always have the frozen foods I prefer and can certainly handle all the freshwater supplies as well. Last time I was there I was seriously tempted to set up a freshwater tank for discus. Around here, its the only place I have ever seen a truly healthy active discus in a store. Simply put if you are interested in aquariums and live in metro detroit you need to try this place out. I bother to make a 35 minute drive there typically once a month (sometimes twice). read more

This is by far the best retail location in all of ypsilanti, ann arbor, and surrounding areas. I am a long time customer that has both fresh and reef setups. Tom, Luke, Alexis, and the veterans on his staff are always beyond helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. I have nothing but love for this store and the people inside of it as they have helped me many times. The prices here are a bit higher than that of Petsmart and Petco, however, i firmly believe that you are paying for quality information and knowledge when you enter here and not just a product. There is constant maintenance done from what i can tell. Last time i was shopping, they started a discount card program, buy so much, get so much off, etc,. Which is awesome for people like me whom only shop there. 10/10, 5 Stars, 2 Thumbs up, whatever you want to say. I decided to revisit Fish Doctors after about a year and half hiatus. I am pleased to say that things have certainly improved. The customer service was stellar; as I was approached several times by very helpful and friendly associates. Most importantly, the fish stock looked healthy and thriving. This is the place to be if you're looking to buy exotic aquatic animals or any aquarium related stuff. Be it tanks, equipments, plants, or fish, this place has got it all. They carry creatures from simple goldfish to exotic jelly fish and rays. I went their to ask about getting a small 10 gallon tank and the employees were helpful in giving me advices and recommendations. I never bought anything from here or ever really got any aquarium but I revisted the place couple times just to look at the creatures. Great place with both common fish that many people are looking for (I got my 9 cardinal tetras there), and also a variety of unusual stock (one customer bought freshwater crabs that have coral-like hands for filter feeding instead of claws). I went here because the reviews were good. Unfortunately, I left without a purchase. Many of the aquariums they have are far too small for the fish that they hold. I know they are holding tanks but that is unacceptable and will overall decrease the health of a fish because of stress. The store is not fair to the fish they sell. read more

I've never written a review on yelp before, but I really liked my experience at The Fish Doctors and I saw that they had no reviews, so I figured it was my duty. My wife and I went in with no idea about fish, but we had gotten a used aquarium at a garage sale and wanted to use it. While we were looking around at fish in the store, an employee asked if we needed help, and ended up spending quite a bit of time with us explaining what we would need. As far as I could tell, he was quite knowledgeable, and he definitely cared about the fish! I went back the following day and he spent quite a bit more time helping me out -- I left with a few guppies, some plants, and the other supplies I needed. I love this store. I have not had a bad experience with them. I never once have had a sick fish or a fish that died from this store. The fish are wonderful, the cost of food is competitive and the staff goes out of the way to help you. I don't have the largest aquarium, but they always treat me like my business is important. They bought back fish from me, and have taken time out to teach me about the fish I am buying. I bring my two year old in all the time and they are tolerant of our constant browsing. Disappointed. Took my 10 year old nephew to get a few fish because we had seen good reviews, and figured we would get higher quality fish here. We got 2 neon tetra and 2 guppies. He went back and bought 1 more guppy later that day. Neon's died less than 24 hours, guppies died in next 2 days of what looked like if finrot. The only fish in the tank. Only the one guppy has survived. Nephew took back the neons in water sample day after purchase with receipt, as instructed by worker in great detail while we were paying at counter. Nephew was told With Grandma at his side that could not take back because neon's were salt water fish (WRONG....your team told us specifically that neon's were freshwater, we told you only wanted freshwater...and that is what the book says) and because we had brought the fish in the water sample as opposed to separate (was never told to bring separately, not in your posted info about returns). Didn't even bother taking back guppies since got so much attitude about the neon's. Nephew very disappointed - won't forget he was lied to, and he spent his tooth fairy money for these little fish. If you don't want to take fish back, don't have a return policy, and don't lie to little kids. read more
