Really enjoyed our experience. We visited on a Fri around 6PM and ordered inside and were able to find a table outside on the sidewalk. They had local craft beer options (cans), which was a nice surprise. My bride ordered Salmon Bowl ($20) and she said it was both fresh and delicious! I went with the Spicy Tuna Roll ($10) and Tuna Nigiri ($11) and was very pleased with my selections. Casual vibe and atmosphere. This place gets my vote!

This is such a cute sushi spot. I love that it's more casual and you order at a counter and then they bring your food. Great for lunch. Calm atmosphere. Small restaurant but I came on a Saturday around 1:00 and it wasn't super busy. The avocado eel roll was great and the spam musubi also good. I liked how they cut it up to be more sushi roll like. Very unique. The rolls were pretty big too. My meal was 18$. Not bad for sushi. Service was great, employees very friendly. Good vibes here. They also have a cute dog that hangs out at the front :)

Cute location, service is on the slower side. Food is great. I usually get their unagi avocado roll and one other as take out (and i do this several times a month). When I dine in, i try their sashimi or nigiris. All very good. Personally felt the fish was quite fresh. One thing that annoys me (and not something against the business)... is their hours are odd. I crave their food and often they aren't open.

This is my go-to place when I'm craving sushi, mostly because I can count on pristine, fresh, clean fish. It's a casual environment (despite the high prices) and the sushi preparation is fast and beautifully presented. The chirashi bowl is the way to go for a variety of fish over rice, but just ordering your favorite nigiri is great too. They do have specialty rolls, which probably is more subdued than other places, but I think that's their point. They don't overdo things so that the fish's natural flavor shines through. There are casual options for lunch, like poke bowls. I also like their sake options from the refrigerated section. This is a great place for purist sushi lovers.

Quick Summary: - Most memorable place I ate in Portland, if you're a fan of fish dishes highly recommend - Casual dining atmosphere with high quality cuisine - Freshest quality fish ever tasted Throughout my visit in Portland, I went to many restaurants and this one, Fish & Rice, stood out to be the best place I have ever eaten. Months have passed as I write this review, and the memory is solid with positive aura. If I had the power, I would live in Portland just to eat Fish & Rice. This restaurant, from the exterior and interior, a very casual style. Simplistic furnishing of tables and chairs, natural colored decor, and for some (nice reason that tickles the gamer in me), a nostalgic gaming console. Inside, the interior is spacious, there is a pickup corner and an ordering corner. I do have to admit, I didn't know where to start. Thankfully, the staff noticed my confusion and they helped us. Later, when observing local guests, the moment they entered the restaurant they took a seat. If we were planning to order for takeout, we could order in the style we have done, which was go to the counter on the right. After doing the unorthodox by making our order at the takeout style but sitting at the tables to eat, we took a seat at the table closest to the food pickup table. My relative ordered the tuna poke bowl and I, who got curious and a fan of yellowtail, chose the kama. I've never had it before, so that piqued my interest. The dishes came at once, and the staff explained where the fish was sourced from. At this stage, I realized that this is no ordinary casual restaurant, when the ingredients are carefully explained. Our first bite we glanced at each other; we were blown away on the freshness of the fish. If I were to compare the freshness, it was as clear as fresh water. So clean, no faint fish or sea like after-taste lingered. I tried a little of the poke, and I would say this might be the best poke I have ever had in my life so far. For the kama, this was the perfect fish oil, and the meat was so tender on any area I ate on the fish. There is a large bone on this kama, but because it's so large it was easy to pick the meat off (the meat slid right off with just chopsticks). While the photo I took looks like the kama is small, it is a pretty big serving size. The rice bowl is a lot too, so I was content full with the dish.

We weren't super hungry, but needed a little dinner. This place was walking distance from our hotel and turned out to be the best food of our trip. Super friendly staff and cute shop dogs were a plus. Wish we had time to get a bigger meal here.

Had a pleasure meeting the owner - such friendly and helpful person who cares a lot about customers and their experience. Nice atmosphere and loved the dog. The poke bowl flavors complemented well each other - crunchy, well seasoned, very fresh. Also love how close it is to the Washington park - every time I get takeouts from them I drive there and eat surrounded by nature.

Great to visit again - things have changed for the better! The chicken dumplings are seriously the best in town. The portions were big, very fresh rice, fish, and salad. Such a good high quality of food. I'll definitely be back. I always do takeouts but they're friendly and I never had to wait for my order. It's also never loud so a great place to eat in peace :)

The tuna bowl felt more like a salad than poke bowl as it was 75% leafy greens, 15% rice, and 10% tuna. It is not like a Hawaiian poke bowl which is something to keep in mind if you try it. That being said - the flavor of the bowl was great and I like the sauce/dressing, although I wish they added a bit more! The tuna is very fresh and the texture is incredibly smooth. If I come again in the future, I do plan on getting sushi instead.

Food is fresh, ambiance is friendly and casual and the service is great! Ordered the albacore bowl and oyster special-- they were both super tasty and perfect for a light lunch. 10/10 We're definitely going again!

Nice location, mediocre food and subpar service. We got there as soon as they opened and there were only 2 other tables occupied, yet we still waited 35 min. Would not return nor recommend

Spicy Salmon Roll + salmon nigiri

I have come here many times and I am never disappointed! The Poké bowls are my favorite, but I also love their Nigiri and rolls. Everything is fresh, and not overly adorned in sauces and fried things. Feels a little bit more like a pure Sushi experience. Cute location with lots of natural light and pretty plants. Plus, being right off of 23rd there's a lot to see and do before or after lunch.

This is my first time here and I have to say the Maui Hook bowl is the best Poke bowl I've ever had. The mix of flavors is sweet, spicy and fruity. Note: I did not have jalapeños in mine. Super fresh ingredients. The staff are very friendly, too.

I thought they were going to be fillers but they tasted great and actually put new fish I've never had before on the map for me! Some of my favorites were - kanpachi - kome buri - ama ebi - salmon (I liked it more than the king salmon, maybe I have peasant taste) - toro The omakase was well thought out as you can see and we even enjoyed the miso soup. I think the price tag of $100/person can initially be steep but you can easily spend this much on these nicer orders. I was also worried they might drop the quality during the AYCE portion but it continued to be delicious and service was consistent throughout (there was another group of 13 people so service was a bit slow having to divide time between the rest of the restaurant and them). I highly recommend this place and will for sure come back. Some delicious quality fish and my new favorite if I'm coming hungry!

With a combined 115 years of experience this restaurant shines with what feels like authentic sushi. We were there with a group of four and were seated promptly for our reservation at 5:45 PM. Our server Ben was an absolute delight and brought vibrancy and genuineness to his service. So shoutout to Ben. I was a bit disappointed that they were unable to accommodate my Tokyo Tea request for a cocktail (I'm always about efficiency when drinking ) but the cocktails that we did receive were elegant and refreshing. But now to the meat of the review or should I say fish? We were taken on a journey through the Toyosu fish market or so I'm and had several delicious rolls such as the Yama roll, Salmon and Scallop, Jamison and the simple California roll. We also had two of the nigiri the salmon belly and the unagi which were both fall apart tender deliciousness in your mouth. Needless to say I am looking forward to our next visit and would love to experience their version of an omakase since the quality was there.

Service was average, but the food more than made up for it. Because of that first experience, we decided to place a fairly large takeout order for a family dinner last night. Big mistake. We were told the order would be ready in 30 minutes. We arrived on time only to discover they had not even started preparing it yet. The explanation was "a computer issue," but nobody called us to let us know there would be a delay, and no real apology was offered. By the time we finally got the food, we were already late for dinner and had to head straight home. When we opened the bag, the nigiri had been packed so poorly that everything was jumbled together in a heap. We literally spent 10 minutes trying to reassemble the sushi ourselves. What disappointed us most was the way management handled the situation afterward. We called expecting that a restaurant positioning itself as upscale would want to make things right. Instead, the manager argued with us, reviewed security footage, and claimed that because we briefly checked the bag at pickup, the order must have been fine when it left the restaurant. We checked that the boxes were there -- we did not open every container because we trusted the restaurant to package the food properly. The bottom line: the dine-in experience may still be worth it because the food itself is genuinely very good, but based on our experience, order takeout at your own risk.
