This spot has had an interesting journey. It originally opened as First Toast, a breakfast/brunch restaurant, then unexpectedly switched to an all-day Mexican concept called Paz y Amor. After only a few months, it transitioned back to breakfast/brunch under the name First Toast. A bit unusual for a fairly new establishment, but we decided to give it a try during the first-ever Lodi Restaurant Week. We ordered the $25 three-course brunch special, which offered several choices. The meal included a starter (yogurt cup or biscuits and gravy), a selected entrée, and a sweet item such as pancakes or French toast. I chose the biscuits and gravy, though unfortunately they were out of gravy, so it was served with a side of jam instead. That was a bit of a disappointment since I was really craving the traditional version. That said, the biscuit itself was fluffy, buttery, and well made--it just would have been much better with gravy. For my entrée, I ordered the Eggs Benedict, which came with two perfectly poached eggs, Canadian bacon, and hollandaise sauce on an English muffin, served with potatoes and an organic spring mix salad. The Eggs Benedict was very good. The eggs were cooked perfectly, and the hollandaise was nicely balanced. I was pleasantly surprised by the simple salad; the greens were fresh and lightly dressed, making it a nice addition. The hash brown patty was crispy but fairly standard. The sweet course was a classic pancake served with strawberries and vanilla bean whipped cream. The pancake was fluffy and tasty, but the standout was the vanilla bean whipped cream--it was light, flavorful, and elevated the dish. Other items ordered at the table included a Belgian waffle, chorizo hash, and chicken sausage. Everything was enjoyable except for the waffle. While it looked great, it lacked the crisp exterior you'd expect and was instead very soft and cakey, which made it a miss for me. The restaurant is located downtown, next to the popular spot Papapavlo's. There's a parking lot nearby along with ample street parking. The space itself is quite small, but there is outdoor seating available. The décor is casual and inviting, making it a comfortable place for breakfast or brunch. Service was okay, there was a bit of a delay in getting water. But overall, we enjoyed our visit and would return again. read more

We came in to try this new restaurant in the Papavolo's Plaza right next to Papavolo's! It has the same footprint of Papavolo's from the counter to the restrooms. We sat at the bar counter and the two servers that were behind the bar were friendly and on top of making sure we were well taken care of. We ordered the Veggie Omelette and Chilaquiles. They were both excellent and good portions. The Chilaquiles had the right amount of spice and flavorful! One of the customers sitting next to me ordered the Chicken fried steak and it was huge. It went from end to end on the plate. We took fresh blueberry muffins made fresh in house and they had blueberry pie that was made in house so there is a selection of fresh baked in house desserts! Food was great. I had the green chilaquiles with grilled chicken. The green salsa on the chilaquiles was good not spicy. The grilled chicken was a little over cooked but not too bad to complain. My partner got the red chilaquiles with steak. The red sauce was more like an enchilada sauce than the red chilaquiles sauce I'm used to. It was thicker and almost like a mole. The French toast was fancy and with the flavors combined (a bite with strawberry, toast and whipped cream) it was good. I added a little syrup for an extra touch. The service was alright. Our waiter hardly checked on our table until we waived them down. It was also busy on the Sunday morning. Also, the restaurant is small so tables are REALLY close. If you want an intimate setting, this isn't it. I'm excited to see their new rebranding coming up. read more

We were seated outside, it was a bit warm, and unfortunately, there were a couple of flies around since the door from the outside patio doesn't fully close. If we hadn't been swatting them away, I'd easily give 5 stars. That said, our server was super friendly and attentive, making sure our drinks were always refilled. I ordered the avocado toast and loved that it was served on fresh sourdough! I also got to try the freshly squeezed orange juice, so refreshing. Now for anyone using a wheelchair and or being handicap might be a little bit of challenge especially If and when they get busy but are very accommodating and friendly and the food is served hot . In the Lodi area for an athletic tournament and decided to grab breakfast from a local establishment. First toast hit on all levels - food, service and ambiance! Food: As a displaced Hawaiian, I had to try my luck with the Loco Moco. On point - Hamburger patty which was fresh not frozen, homemade mushroom onion gravy, and egg whites (sorry not a yolk fan). Slightly off point - rice which was more like Uncle Ben's and less like traditional sticky gohan. However, the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes were on point! Fluffy, perfectly cooked lemony pancakes, topped with homemade whipped cream , fresh blueberries and candied lemon slivers. Service & Ambiance: While it's not uncommon that people are nicer the further away from the SF Bay Area you get, the people here are very warm and pleasant. Waitstaff was very attentive to both their regulars and newbies (like us). Restaurant has a full service bar and nicely heated atrium which was perfect on a cold morning. Sundays are great for breakfast at a nice eatery. First time at First Toast. The restaurant is small but updated and classy. One thing that caught my eye was their use of gold-color utensils. We started our meals with pineapple mimosas. My wife ordered the hash skillet (eggs, steak, country potatoes). She enjoyed the salsa that dresses it. I ordered the chorizo scramble. Mine came with tortillas, toast and hash brown. The scramble was well seasoned and the hash brown was crispy. I enjoyed my meal down to the coffee. My primary reaction here was disappointment. My first impression was flavorless which is not the first word that comes to mind when you think comida Mexicano. Chips and salsa, with a small serving of tasty black bean frijoles, looked great, but the chips had not a hint of corn taste and the watery salsa was invisible. Nothing there. The fish tacos were enormous, ok, and topped with a lovely salad of shredded cabbage and tomatoes but again, I'm chewing it, it's in my mouth but I am not tasting anything. No cilantro, no jalapeño, no corn, no fish. Weird. The sauce with it was actually pretty tasty but I don't eat fish tacos for the sauce. And I have had good Spanish rice in my time but this was not it. My wife's chicken Caesar had not a hint of anchovy paste, well grilled chicken and was just lettuce-y. The price was usual, the service was excellent and the ambiance is welcoming. The food was fresh and boring. I am reminded of the Chevy's restaurant chain - Fresh Mex! No thanks. read more
