My daughter needed some good tennis shoes and after having seen this store's commercials on tv I decided to try this store out before going to Academy. The moment we walked in, we were quickly greeted by two different employees and were shown everything they had in my daughters size. What impressed me most was the young man's product knowledge and his amazing patience with my daughter being that she was unable to make up her mind as to which pair she wanted. In short: the owner is very inhospitable and is just plain rude. I'll never return to purchase from them. I am a novice tennis player excited to get into tennis. I asked my husband (has played for about 12 years) to go with me to buy tennis shoes. We are full-time working parents so have few opportunities to go to a specialty tennis store. We arrived on July 3rd around 6:30, about 30 minutes before the shop was to close for the July 4th holiday. The associates AND owner seemed completely uninterested in helping me when I walked in (there were a few other people in the store too). I grabbed someone's attention because I knew i was working with a small time frame, and I was very honest in telling the associates that I'm new and probably need to try on a few shoes because I don't know which brand fits best. I understood I walked in 30 minutes before the store was to close and people want to get home for a holiday. However, the owner was COMPLETELY inhospitable and I will never return. The associate actually seemed to turn a bit and started being kind and bringing out what I requested to try on, when he realized that I was rushing through trying on everything because I didn't want to hold them past 7pm (when the store was set to close). When I didn't like the fit of a brand (new balance), I asked to try on an adidas and the owner blatantly said they were more narrow. I use Adidas Golf shoes and am very happy with them, so against his statement, i requested to try them on. The Adidas actually ended up being my favorite shoe, and although it was only 6:53 when I WOULD HAVE bought the shoes, I will take my business elsewhere. The owner had already said "my guys want to go home" (if I were an owner, I would have let them leave and stayed to make the sale - the associates don't make commission - I asked towards the end because my associate ended up being helpful). When I was going to make the purchase, we were rushed out. All in all, it was an awful experience - the owner should have closed the store earlier or stayed in lieu of holding his 2 associates with him. He was grumpy and I'll never return. I'll either go to win well in Stone Oak or wait to go to Tennis Express in Houston on a weekend. Just to add: I called to check store hours for the holiday earlier in the day and was told it closed at 7pm. read more

I am a long-time customer of First Serve Tennis (20+ years) and have used them on a personal level and now to fulfill my needs as a Collegiate Head Coach. All I can say is 5-stars doesn't do them justice. Richard and his crew have been extraordinary. They have built a company and service like none other and the San Antonio and South Texas community are fortunate to have such a business to rely on. I don't typically write reviews but felt compelled to do so when I read a recent negative review that does not jive with virtually anyone's experience at this store. I think it is exceptional that a business such as this with the growth it has seen is still handled front and center by the owner, Richard Flores. He knows all regular customers by name and can recall products they have used in the past and what may be appropriate for them now. He has been selected as a stringer for ATP level events, most notably the French Open. He educates his employees and demands a consistent level of excellence. And they string on state of the art machines. So to question his qualifications and those of his staff is absurd. The equipment of the top players in Texas, not to mention those of the top collegiate programs in Texas and Oklahoma, are entrusted to Richard and his staff. That speaks for itself. I would like to also clarify the idea of discrediting a tennis shop for not having a tension checker. These products are a gimmick. When you string a racquet and ask for it to be strung at 55 lbs, you are not actually understanding what you are asking for. Stringing at 55 lbs does not mean the string bed would register a tension of 55 lbs (this is what a tension checker would read). Stringing at 55 lbs means you are pulling each individual string at a constant tension of 55 lbs. As these strings begin to weave together, that "relative tension" of the string bed would increase. This is why when you string a racquet that has an 18x20 pattern at 55 lbs, it feels "tighter" than a racquet with a 16x18 pattern also at 55 lbs. So in reality, having a tension checker register 5-10 lbs higher in the sweet spot, would be appropriate. So saying you like your racquet strung at 55 really means you like the way the string bed feels after pulling each individual string at 55 lbs. Sorry for the long post, but I feel Richard and his crew deserve as much praise and credit as possible. In the new era of online discounts and huge warehouses, I'm not sure a shop like First Serve would be possible to start and create to the level he has attained. It is a true testament to the service they provide and the manner with which they do it. You don't stay in a cut-throat business such as the tennis product industry for over 25 years without taking care of your customers. First Serve is the perfect name because you'll never need a second option. read more

Its been 20 years since I last held a tennis racquet and I was in need of some serious guidance in selecting a new one. The gentleman who helped me showed me a nice variety of racquets at different price points. It wasn't about selling me the more expensive racquet, which I appreciated. The Good: A deep (great) selection of racquets for a local shop. Quick stringing -- as someone mentioned, there are three stringing machines so they're able to get you in and out pretty quickly. The Bad: I've been in the store five times now since I've lived in the area and only two of the times did anyone greet me or offer to help me within a couple of minutes of walking through the door. And it's not like every employee that was working at the time was busy with something or someone else. On the two good occasions, one specific employee was the reason things went so well. The first time of the two occasions, I knew wanted a new racquet and knew which racquet I wanted to purchase. He greeted me as I walked in, showed me the racquet, helped me pick string for it and strung it for me with 30 minutes of buying it. The transaction was so smooth that I bought overgrips and lead tape on top of that. The second time, the same guy helped me out with a re-string of the racquet I bought about a month prior. He helped with stringing once again and was so responsive that I ended up buying a new pair of shoes (Yonex Power Cushion Pro) along with the re-string. So..the other 3 times, well..the first two were essentially non-events after being the only person in the store at the time and finally getting some help. I opted not to purchase anything but only because I wasn't "sold" on the current styles available. The third negative experience was probably the worst to date. Four people working including the owner (Rich). I walk in the door and Rich is with two other customers. The other three guys say absolutely nothing. Not even a word of acknowledgement. I walk around the store for a good five minutes and still nothing. Rich is still involved with the two other customers (two males) when two other customers come in well after I do. He acknowledges them but doesn't say word one to me. Granted, I've been there for about 10 minutes now. The whole entire time I'm in the store, Rich (the owner) doesn't say a word to me but every other customer in the store he speaks to. Finally, one of the other employees asks if they could help me. After a brief conversation about a specific shoe I'm looking for, I leave without purchasing anything..mostly because I'm dissatisfied with the whole experience. At this point, I'll find another resource for my stringing needs and I realize one aspect of why the online experience of purchasing tennis gear is becoming so lucrative. Yes...it is more convenient but at least when I purchase online I can get the help I need without what I feel are assumptions, judgements, or just plain apathy by the staff. read more

Had numerous tennis racquets restrung recently with printed string type and tension for each racquet provided. I called prior and was told same day return only to find 30minutes latter, after I arrived, they could not get it done that day. I enjoy lies, so I waited until the next day to pickup. I called to see if the racquet stringing finished and after a few minutes I was asked if my name on the racquets. When I turned in the racquets I had to encourage the guy to give some kind of receipt or something given more than 1k worth of racquets was now in their hands. In other words, apparently I was the first person to ask them to string some racquets and they are still working through the process. So, after that testy conversation in which I made it clear I do not do their job so I have no idea how they manage the racquets once they accept them, they with childish tood let me know they have them. I picked them up to find the tension for all racquets noticeably higher tension than requested--than is listed on the racquets with their name on it. I asked them if they have a tension checker, no. A tennis shop that has no tension checker. seriously. So in no position to argue over my feel vs theirs, I went to a tennis shop that could check the tensions. The tensions in all but one racquet were 5-10lbs high in the sweet spot. My recommendation regarding first serve tennis is to have a tension checker with you when you arrive, or better still have someone else string your racquets. I went their because I found them on a certified stringer site. What a loser recommendation that is of which I am challenging that certification. Good luck. read more
